Exactly, that sucks. We have so many wild animals around our house, almost all of them can carry rabies. Except possums, their body temperature is too low for rabies to survive. Except possums, their body temperature is too low for rabies to survive. Squirrels don't carry rabies, either. I was a reporter for the Corpus Christi newspaper back in the early 1990s, and my beat was five focking counties, including Kleberg, home of Kingsville and The King Ranch. I ran across a cop report that a rabid cow had been found on The King Ranch. I'd never before heard of a rabid cow, so it seemed like a good story. I found a Kleberg County phone book in the newspaper records room and found a phone number for the King Ranch owners' HOUSE. I called the number, and focking Mrs. Kleberg answered the phone: RING RING! Mrs. Kleberg: Hello? Rusty: Good afternoon, my name is Rusty Syringes, and I'm a reporter for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. With whom am I speaking? Mrs. Kleberg: This is Mrs. Kleberg. What do you want? Rusty: I ran across a police report indicating that a rabid cow had been found on the King Ranch. Is this the first time in King Ranch history that you've had a rabid cow? Mrs. Kleberg: I'm not answering your questions, and don't ever call this number again! Rusty: But ... CLICK! About an hour later, the editor calls me in his office and says he received a call from Mrs. Kleberg, complaining about me calling her house. He told me to never call that number again, and I'm like, "What the fock? Why wouldn't I call that number?" I did manage to get the story, and it made the state/national wire. I also worked in that Mrs. Kleberg declined comment, which I'm sure pizzed her off when she read it.

Also from the googles - small rodents like mice and rabbits are almost never found to carry rabies and can't transmit it to humans. Birds are not mammals so cannot carry rabies. (looked that up because my dogs have been killing a lot of rabbits and birds lately) Wildlife most commonly diagnosed with rabies includes; raccoons, bats, skunks, foxes, and coyotes.
