I just came back from 2 weeks in Italy and I must say, their no-tip culture is da bomb!  Tell the waiter you want the check and you are paying by card; he brings out the check and a wireless POS device.  You look it over, he punches in the amount, you tap the card, and WALLA! you are done and can leave.  

A few nicer places did add a service fee (it was called something else, can't remember) to cover linens, etc.  It was never that much though.  And I didn't see any of the things mentioned up thread from Italy, like slice fees etc.  Wife and I shared at least one dish more often than not, and I never saw any shenanigans.

There are places like that here.  Go to Red Robin.  After you're done eating, there's a little wireless unit on the table.  Pull up your bill, tap, pay... done.  The ONLY difference is one extra screen where you tap on the tip percentage.  Not sure how one step that takes 3 seconds makes something go from "da bomb" to not "da bomb".

The concept of tipping food severs is dumb.

What's even dumber is this concept that we needed to raise the tip amount from 15% to 20% because inflation.

Hey, dummies, the price of the food goes up and your tip goes up by the same percentage.

If servers need tips to cover wages, just raise the price of the food 15%.  That will more than cover their wages.  Then if the servers suck, people will stop going to your restaurant and you'll either replace them or go out of business.

Tipping is out of control in this country.  My company's entry level or low skilled jobs, the kind filled by conservatives, are now competing with jobs from fast food joints simply due to the extra money fast food workers make from tipping.

Black people have it right regarding tipping or not tipping. Maybe we all should follow.

My co-worker is an engineer, single and makes a good living.  When we go out he refuses to tip more than a few bucks no matter what the tab is.  We went out one night and it was his turn to buy, our tab was 96.00, he left 100.  I said that is not enough, told me if they want more $$$$ they need to get a different job.  I threw down another 20 as we were leaving because I go there once in a while. 

Maybe he is right.

First off characterizing black people as being bad tippers is a bad look.  There are bad tippers among all races.

And your friend is wrong.  Industries like restaurants that rely on tipping and have it built into the pricing are fine.  It's all these new places that want tips that do not have tipping built into the pricing that are the issue.

I waited tables and blacks tipped no different than whites. Actually the worst tippers were the clearly out of their element whites.  But you don't see me characterizing all whites as bad tippers do you?  That's because I'm not a narcissistic dbag who thinks I know everything.
