Ever witness your child getting knocked unconscious?

Recommended Posts

I was in Michigan last weekend with my oldest son (12) for soccer.  Game on Sunday, he was playing center back.  One of his teammates was running next to a player from the other team battling for the ball as they approached mid-field.  Ball popped forward and my son stepped to win and play the ball...Just as he played it, the kid from the other team ran full speed into him.  It sounded like football players colliding.  Son was on his stomach facing the parent's sideline...about 10 yards or so away from me.  Eyes closed, not moving (out cold) for 3-4 seconds.  I didn't see heads collide, but found out later that the other kid's forehead connected with my son's eye.  Fortunately, athletic trainers are required to be at these games, so they sprinted out onto the field and took care of him. We're fortunate that he doesn't have any fractures or issues with his eye/vision.

He wanted to go check out a car show that afternoon before we flew home.  I was glad he bounced back pretty quick, but he's in concussion protocol now.

Anyone else experience their child getting knocked unconscious?

I didn't see it, but we've been through the concussion protocol a few times with my cheerleader daughter, never my football son.

Almost had my daughter get knocked unconscious in college in a field hockey game...  She was about seven or so yards away on a free hit and the opponent drove the ball, it elevated and hit her square in the forehead...  She dropped like a tree, but never lost consciousness...  In fact, she never was even concussed, she passed all the tests at the emergency room...  Just a little lower or to the side and she could have had brain damage or even lost her life...  She still wanted to go back into the game...

My parents have seen it happen to me when playing football in high school.  I have yet to see it with one of my children though.

Why? One of the highest rates of injuries and concussions are cheerleaders.

Not the fat ones we had that couldn't play sports, the actual athletic ones that do flips and throws.

Yeah she was a flyer.  She got dropped twice during stunts.  It's common.  The one year the cheerleading team had 3 concussions, the football team 1.

Did you know that the most common injury in competitive cheerleading is concussions? The overall injury rate in cheerleading is low; however of those injuries, concussions account for 31.1 percent.

It depends how you are talking about it.   Yes, that info is a few years behind.   Sometimes an article you look at just counts competitions, sometimes it includes practices.   Sometimes cheerleading is considered a "sport" and counted, sometimes not.    So as you posted, many of the injuries are concussions and if you look at the rates - competition is lower but practice is higher than many mainstream sports.   If I scanned right, for practice it's 2nd to football.

Still not understanding why that post had to be shtick.

When Peefoam was a baby, his parents myriad times spiked him on his head like Rob Gronkowski did with a football after a touchdown, but it still wouldn't get him to shut up.

Eventually, Peefoam's parents developed PDS and became liberal trolls.

I have an 11 and 14 year old both soccer players for travel and school.  I have seen a couple head on head collisions that were scary to watch and hear.  You know it’s bad with the sound….it’s just different than normal contact.  Glad your boy is okay.

Yep, that sound was awful. My son’s coach said he heard it clear as day across the field and feared the worst.

My parents watched me get concussed in football and wrestling.  Coaches cracked open the smelling salts and back to play I went.

I wanted to add this...

It was her first game her senior year and it was a road game that was some 3.5 to 4 hours north of her college...  We didn't go to the game because we live 1.5 hours south of her college, so that would be a long drive for a mid-week game...  We were watching the game stream when it happened...  Absolutely nothing we could do as she walked off the field...  We had no contact with anyone until after the game was over... It was the longest hour of my life, waiting to hear anything...

The trainer suggested a trip to the ER, so when they were about 90 minutes away from college on the charter bus, I left to go the college to get her....  They pulled in at 1am ET and it was off to the hospital...  Finally got back home around 6am...  But like I said, no issues, just a huge knot on her forehead...

I witnessed a young girl getting knocked unconscious. I guess I should feel badly for her. But I told her specifically not to sniff around my chloroform collection.
