Just 19,704 fans were at Tropicana Field to watch the Tampa Bay Rays fall to the Texas Rangers 4-0 in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series. Here’s what you need to know

The Rays had 31 regular-season crowds larger than Tuesday’s, but it was, at least, a bigger crowd than usual. The Rays averaged 17,781 fans per game this season, their highest average attendance (in a season not impacted by Covid) since 2014. They ranked 27th among baseball’s 30 teams in attendance this season, ahead of the Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins and Oakland A’s. — Kepner

 

Tampa so doesn't deserve that team.

Great story for my Rangers to make the post season............but I still don't expect much. 

To lose not one, but 2 aces, coupled with a weak ass bullpen - the bats are too streaking to carry this team far.

won't shock me at all when you take down the Rays.   Lost our ace, our #2 and #4 starters... our top setup man, and some dude named Wander Franco.

it's mainly to location. Yes, the stadium is bad but its a logistical nightmare. and now the new stadium wont solve that issue and won't even have a retractable roof. insane. such a well run organization deserves better.

Well that sucked...I last longer in the sack then the Brewers did in the playoffs...I waited a whole year for this.

As an Oriole fan I was happy to see Tampa and Toronto eliminated. I didn’t want to face a divisional opponent. Texas and Minnesota looked good against them though. We’ll see. I wasn’t expecting all 4 series to go 2-0.

I'll be going to both O's playoff games.  The outlook for this team is super bright.  Need to get that lease signed though.

a lot of teams have bright outlooks but it always some down to injuries.  there has not been a repeat champ since the 20th century.

That's true.  Just that the O's are stocked with young talent currently in the bigs with a large pipeline of young talent crushing it in the minors waiting to come up.

we know how that always goes.  next year they will lose 3 starting pitchers to injury and 2-3 position players as well.  in desperation, they empty the minors of prospects for a couple band aid fixes in some major trades and still come up short.  year 3, the minors is a wasteland and they have old guys with huge contracts and squeak into the playoffs only to fall short again  year 4 they trade everyone and rebuild for 40 years.  every single franchise in the Orioles current situation seems to do this. might not get a single ring.

has been 8 wild card series since they went from 1 game to best of 3. All 8 teams that won the 1st game won the series. Thanks for nothing MLB and ruining a great thing with the 1 game playoff.

its really fun paying attention to a full 162 game season and then having it end with 2 bad games. Would have at least liked to see this round be best of 5. Granted, it's the Rays fault for falling completely flat for 2 home games but it just feels like a terribly quick way to end such a long ass season.

The wild card games are best-of-3, all at the better seeded team…

The DS are best-of-five and the CS and WS are best-of-seven…

if the Rays won a top seed, theyd skip the first round.  the punishment for failing to do that is a short series.

actually how a team finishes is more important in MLB.  teams that enter the playoffs winning at least 8 of their last 10 have an elevated chance of winning the title regardless of seed.  there was no such team this year.

True.  There's tons of citeis that would support a team.  The main leagues keep trying to force teams into Florida.

I already have tix for game one of the ALDS and will be buying tix to game two.

One of the good things about living close to the city is that you can buy tix a couple of hours before the game for way cheaper than buying them well ahead of time.

Gonna be a great weekend.

partially out of their control. obviously winning the games is in their control but being the 4th seed in the AL while having the 2nd best record is out of their control. If Baltimore was not also in the AL East, the Rays have a bye along with them. If MLB seeded like NBA does, the Rays have a bye. 

I'm not excusing the Rays pitiful performance against Texas but it is sort of lame that a 99 win team is playing a best of 3 series while a 90 win team is relaxing in round 1.

you're talking 30 years ago when 4 teams made the playoffs. (and I bet you complained back then) 

If thats how things operated today, fine. But MLB has made it a point to expand the playoffs, currently with 6 on each side. I'll also point out that if MLB still operated with 4 teams making the playoffs on each side, Tampa makes it, there are no bye's, and they play a best of 5 series. 

Again, bottom line is Tampa was playing at home and should have taken care of business... but since MLB wants to expand the post season, it does bother me that a fairly worse team over 162 games gets to rest.
