Do they even know how much corn it takes to fill a gas tank??

I had an Impala that used E85.   Filled it a few times with it.  But only if the price was worth it.

Focking corn for fuel.  FAILURE.

I met with a farmer yesterday who sells 575,000 bushels of corn to a biorefinery every year.  He just finished drying his harvest Saturday.

Nothing to do with climate change it was legislated in 2005 when the gas prices were ramping up just prior to the discovery of horizontal well fracking.

The problem is not just flex fuel but we should even get rid of e10.

Compared to pure gasoline ethanol is more corrosive, it is less energy dense, it makes gasoline absorb water easier, it drives up the price of food because we are now introducing more demand against the food supply and it also drives up the price of gasoline because a gallon of ethanol costs more than a gallon of refined gasoline.

Had a Grand Caravan that could use flex fuel.  When I saw the price drop, I tried it for about a week where I had a long trip planned.

The price was about 25% lower than regular, but my mileage for the week dropped by 30% (24 mpg > 16-17) so the economics weren't there to keep using it.  Typically I see the E85 price is only about 10% lower.  If I had one today, I wouldn't even consider using E85

One can argue that it drives up the price of food, but it’s a specious argument.  True, farmers could be planting more food crops if they weren’t planting for biofuels so there’s a scarcity impact.  But the corn planted for biofuel is not the same corn put on the table.  Furthermore, the farmer gets a shockingly low return for his crops.  The farmer I met yesterday is getting $4.40/bushel which works out to about $1,100 per acre.  Most of the cost of food is post-commodity, so don’t be too quick to believe biofuels have a big impact on supermarket prices.

Ah thank you. Yeah we don’t seem to have that in WA, or at least not that I’ve seen. I do believe I’ve seen it in Wyoming and other, uh, “cheaper” states

Yes, i know a farmer who grows 1,000's of acres of corn for the same purpose.  Why don't you use it?

Why don’t I use biofuel?  My company car isn’t an FFV.

The law legislating ethanol in fuel happened during the mid 2000's when gasoline ramped up to 5.00 a gallon. It was passed to help with the fuel supply and was not passed because of any issue related to global warming.

The below study finds that corn ethanol actually causes more carbon in the atmosphere than gasoline.

Quote from article:

The carbon intensity of corn ethanol produced under the RFS is no less than gasoline and likely at least 24% higher.

https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2101084119

The below was a snippet from that time period, all reports from this time period talk about how ethanol is a renewable fuel. Nothing to do with global warming.

August 2005 — President George W. Bush signs the Energy Policy Act of 2005, requiring oil companies to add ethanol to their gasoline. Called the Renewable Fuels Standard, this mandate begins with a 4-billion-gallon (15.14-billion liter) requirement in 2006 and doubles by 2012. Corn is selling for $1.95 a bushel.

Fuel ethanol is one of those issues where we can blame both sides equally.

The original bill was passed in 2005 under a republican president, republican senate, and republican house. Then it was doubled in 2007 in a bill introduced by a democrat and passed by democratic senate/house.

Wrong - https://www.epa.gov/renewable-fuel-standard-program

Congress created the renewable fuel standard (RFS) program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the nation’s renewable fuels sector while reducing reliance on imported oil.

In my opinion that is marketing BS, many companies and sadly government organizations put what the public wants to see on their website rather than the truth. Can't believe everything you read on the internet.

Flex fuel is worse for carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline and is worse for MMGW.

When the climate policy was wrong it should be cried and whined about.  Thanks for adding nothing per the usual.  :(

Anyone else use extra corn in their tanks for the earf?

As one that tries to be cognizant of my contributions to global warming as well as conservation efforts, ethanol can Fock right off. I used it once because it was super cheap, and immediately regretted it. Truck didn't run as well, and gas mileage plummeted. I consider ethanol to just be a giant subsidy for corporate farming at this point.
