Fuk the Smiths, and especially Morrissey. They sucksucksuck. Although What Time is Now is a decent song.

But I fully support an artist not wanting their art used in ways that are contrary to their own ideology.

"Art". 😆

If someone likes the smiths they probably spent a lot of time in their dorm room alone.

I knew a guy like that. He was literally stoned everyday of his life after he turned 15. His three foot bong had a rotating bowl of one hitters. He literally couldn't go to class without being high.

So let's say a baker (for example), considers their work, "art", you're ok with that baker denying work to certain people who don't share their ideology?

It's kind of scary how so many people in this are dumb to the level of being liberal brainwashing victims. They literally are flat out buying into an anti American cult. Where's Jim Jones when you need him.

Big Mouth Strikes Again:

Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking
When I said I'd like to smash every tooth
In your head
Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking
When I said by rights you should be
Bludgeoned in your bed
And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her Roman nose
And her walkman started to melt
Bigmouth
Bigmouth
Bigmouth strikes again
And I've got no right to take my place
To the Human race

Panic

Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
It says nothing to me about my life
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play

Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ

Trump will have to do his signature “jerking off two dudes” dance to something else I guess. Not that big a deal.

Depends. If that baker is self employed, then yes. If they are employed by a company that has policies against it, then no.

I also support the freedom of speech that allows for people to call out or boycott the baker that refused. I don't support that baker being doxxed, threatened, or harassed.

Ok, so if people then call out Marr, for example and boycott him, you're going to back them up if others call said boycotter's names and such, right?

What I find amusing and a bit ironic is that Morrissey, who has used offensive racist language, would probably have no problem at all with Smiths' songs (or his own) being played a Trump rally. 😁

I've honestly never heard of the Smiths

The whole emo thing began because of them. A lot of people that listened to their music ended up cutting themselves. Probably not coincidental.

Should we consider The Smiths to be a precursor to emo?

renderTimingPixel.pngI personally would consider them to be a proto-emo band that has been the most influential non-emo band on the genre en masse. Lyrically they are essentially emo, dealing with similar subject matter as 90% of contemporary emo bands. Musically, they are of their time. Their timbre is quintessential 80s synth-pop. Nonetheless, I would lump them in with emo as a whole, especially since numerous emo band (Mike Kinsela via Owen comes to mind) cite them as a very important influence on their music. Maybe they are not emo qua emo. But perhaps they should be held to some higher standard as being a precursor to the genre. What are your thoughts?

Morrissey reignites racism row by calling Chinese a 'subspecies'

For almost three decades, indie rock icon Morrissey has made almost as many enemies as devoted fans willing to hang on his every melancholy-drenched lyric. Described by one high court judge as "devious, truculent and unreliable", the former Smiths frontman is no stranger to controversy and criticism. But tomorrow he reignites a simmering row about his views on race in an interview in Guardian Weekend magazine, in which he describes Chinese people as a "subspecies" because of their treatment of animals.

Morrissey, a vegetarian and animal rights advocate who last year abandoned the stage at the Coachella festival in California because of the smell of cooking meat, described the treatment of animals in China as "absolutely horrific", referring to recent news stories about animals in Chinese circuses and zoos. He told interviewer Simon Armitage: "Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can't help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies."

I was in high school in the 80's. The people who were into The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure... were called Mods. Mods subsequently morphed into emo.

But, out of all the bands that were popular with mods, The Smiths, by far, were the most "emo."

Actually the Who was the first “Mod” band.

I love Depeche Mode (just saw them) and I like the Cure a lot. The Smiths are terrible. Marr is actually a fine guitarist, but the lead singer has got to be one of the most annoying people in the history of popular music, with perhaps the whiniest voice ever. And yes I thought this way about him for years long before he showed himself to be a racist and bigot.

This is one of the reasons as to why I can never take any of your threads in FFA on music rankings of 80's bands seriously (or any other decade).

The Smiths' output was uneven, but much of it was brilliant despite Morrissey's droll and often irritating delivery. They were incredibly influential. I doubt that you ever took the time to explore their catalog over the few years that they existed.

As easily the biggest Smith’s fan on this board I got to say Johnny Marr and Morrissey are the biggest bunch of pu55ies probably ever to play music that being said they also don’t even own the rights to their own songs so my response of would be F off

None of these bands had anything to do with each others genres and 80s emo sprung up from hardcore. 90s emo was a whole different thing. Cure’s 1st album was decent then they morphed into goth and all the girly men. Smith’s had some really good singles, the highs were high and the lows are pretty low. Morrissey was a hell of a songwriter. DepechecMode first broke big in the sissy crowd who we call now Low Ters

The Smiths going their separate ways were straphangers besides Morrissey . Biggest thing Marr ever did was inspire Noel Gallaghers look. Without Morrissey he was a session player ham & egger

All of those bands had the same fans. And there was no such thing as 80's emo. They were mods/goths (same crowd of freaks at my school). Emo came much later.

Every time.....I mean it.....EVERY TIME...someone is given the opportunity to make an articulate, intelligent argument regarding the stance of conservative viewpoints.....they choose sophomoric,  immature  responses. They do this with the full weight of the total disaster that the current administration has been at there backs. Every argument they put forth is " I know you are but what am i?" It's absolutely preposterous that a segment of the population that touts its Ivey league intelligence regarding the righteous of their cause & beliefs can be so obviously flawed in every aspect of their existence. $hitting on trailer owners while sitting in your own feces is so ......walmart???

🙄

They were stellar musicians. Andy Rourke's killer bass line anchors the foundation on this 1983 Peel Session track, along with Marr's delicate guitar stylings. Morrissey's vocals are, for once, understated. This track has a jazz club feel, arguably the best thing they ever did.

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now might be their best song.

I was looking for a job.

and then I found a job.

and Heaven knows I'm miserble now.

In my life.

why do I give valuable time?

to people who I'ld much rather kick in the eye.
