Caitlin Clark debut

It's also worth mentioning that a WNBA game is only 40 minutes long, as compared to a 48 minute NBA game.   Here's a link to Caitlin's stats, sorted by TO's:

https://stats.wnba.com/leaders/?Season=2024&SeasonType=Regular Season&StatCategory=TOV

So the next highest TO/game player is at 4.2, compared to 5.7 for Caitlin.  I also see that Caitlin is only shooting 37.7% which seems kind of low to me.  Is that good in the WNBA?  Regardless, 5.7 TO's/gm in a 40 minute game is unacceptable for a star player.  And, if you look at my first post in this thread, I was and still am complimentary of Caitlin.  I think it's too early to be judging her harshly.  But that doesn't mean we can't be realistic when discussing her stats/performance.

Her percentage is down and is not considered very good by WNBA standards.

im in the same camp as you. I'm not hoping she flops or declaring her some sort of complete bust. I think I even said she will probably wind up going down as one of the WNBA greats (for what that is worth).

but i do think it's reasonable to be critical of her poor performance early on, based on the build up... be that her fault or not.

the fact that shes not playing all that great and people are pointing to "fastest rookie in WNBA history to blah blah blah" just speaks to the level of talent in the WNBA and why it shouldn't be that difficult for her to hit the ground running.

She's played like 10 games, averaging 17 pts, 5 boards, and 5 assists and people are still calling her out?

Did you people think she'd step in to the pros and start dominating women 10 years older than her on the worst team in the league?

I guess you all cut Payton Manning after his rookie season too?

Jeez

What I find crazy is their schedule. They played their 9th game last night, which is the most in the league. Then they have back-to-back games this weekend. I think that will be 11 games in 20 days. Plus, only two preseason games and no offseason. I can’t imagine what it’s like for rookies in the WNBA.

He posted "she's not playing all that great" after 10 games in her career with a 17/5/5/ stat line.

She is playing great, she's just not dominating the league completely yet.

Judging anyone after such a short time is ridiculous.

She's not playing that great.  That's a fact.  Doesn't mean he, or I, don't think she had a good chance of being special long term.  Discussing the FACT that she's not playing great right now isn't some great slight.  Pretty sure she'd agree with that assessment.

It's more that the WNBA is trying to capitalize on Clark.  After Sunday, the Fever will have played 11 games... non of the other 11 teams, only Phoenix will have played 9 and the rest all 8 and less.  Las Vegas will have only played 6.

A 17/5/5/ stat line for a rookie on the worst team in the league with basically zero practice isn't great?

LMFAO

37% FG's, 5.7 TO's/game.  Those are not good stats.  Even Hawkeye acknowledges such.  Doesn't mean she's not going to be good, but so far she's not good.  What's her team, 1-8?

She ranks 35th in FG% & 30th in 3-pt%  That's not "great" either.

I think many of us think she'll be fine in time, but as of right now... she's having a hard time.  Meh.

The hype surrounding Peyton* Manning relative to the rest of his draft class does not equal the hype surrounding Clark.  After all, there was still talk of Manning or Leaf #1 overall, no matter how serious it actually was.  In addition, Peyton Manning and other top drafted players in mens sports were stepping into leagues with much higher talent levels. That's why we don't expect them to hit the ground running let alone dominate.

The WNBA talent level is not very good. So paired with all the hype around Clark, it is certainly fair to expect her to be off to a better start and certainly a fair discussion.

My twitter feed is got a bunch of clips of some chick bodying Clark for no reason in between plays.

Question.  Back in the 70s and 80s when they used to beat up stars in the NBA, teams would have enforcers on the team.

Is that not a thing in the WNBA?  I mean just sign some big hoss and tell her that her only job is to clothesline any bìtch that takes a cheap shot on Clark.

Cmon man. The media made her out to be the next coming of MJ. She beat pistol petes record. She is LITERALLY the only WNBA player to ever have her own shoe at Nike. Her team is focking awful but still manages to draw an almost sell out crowd(of 12). She was the SAVIOR of the WNBA. She does not get to have it both ways. She does not get to have all the media hype and then people say coincidingly "Did you people think she'd step in to the pros and start dominating women 10 years older than her on the worst team in the league?" that is not how this works.

All of that being said she reminds me of Shaq. These other women really do not know what to do with her so they are hacking the living fock out of her every single game. Random blindside body checks. You can tell that the rest of the league is jealous and they are taking it out on her.  If she gets hurt on a hard foul the league will absolutely suffer.

No, because even her teammates are jealous too.

If the GM is smart, he goes out and finds a 27 year old, 6'-7" 225lb dude who couldn't make it in the NBA G-League, and sign him to a deal, because he "transitioned".  Then, call Dawn Staley and ask her to stand by him in a conference call supporting his signing of bringing in a transgender player.  Anytime someone focks with Clark, bring in the dude to fock that chicks day up.  The league will learn.

Ya notice that there has NEVER been a trans player in the WNBA. EVER.

That's because the biggest supporters of transgenders in women's sports are women who don't play at all, loser men, and retired players.

Haha, she does.

Brittney Griner has been "ordered by officials" to take a DNA test to determine whether she would serve her sentence in a male or female prison.

The WNBA is playing a condensed schedule because they are taking a month off due to the summer Olympics...

Why do the chicks use a smaller ball?  WHy don't they lower the rim to 7 feet too?

In 1935, Dittebrant suggested the introduction of a smaller and lighter basketball for female players (Dittebrant, 1935, in Pitts and Semenick, 1988). The author stated that the standard basketball was too heavy and too large for women, and that women's palms were too small to efficiently control the ball.

The height is just fine where it is...

I say we suggest that the NBA season and the WNBA run consecutively where the men go from November 1st through March and playoffs end April 30th.  The women start May 1st, run through September and the playoffs end October 31st.  Both play 48 minutes and use the same ball and play in the same arenas.  That way, there's a 1:1 correlation between the women's game and the men's game.  If the women make the exact same money, then they get the exact same money, for playing the exact same game.

It really is not though. If they lowered it to 8ft they would be able to play above the rim and it WOULD be more entertaining.

It's why I'm condensing their season.  They play less games, 48 minutes should be fine.

Doing the math... start Nov 1, finish Mar 20, is exactly 20 weeks.  Teams average 3 games a week... 60 total games played.  Every team makes the playoffs.  East Conf finishes their season on March 19, first round March 21... West conf end on March 20, first round on March 22nd.  The first round is single game elimination... 8 vs 15, 9 vs, 14, 10 vs 13, 11 vs 12, with top 7 seeds in each conference having a bye.  The second round starts on March 23rd for the East, 24th for the west... play Best of 7, covering 10 days.  The second round ends on April 1st (2nd for the West).  Final Four, best of 7, starts on April 3rd for the East (4th for the West), over 10 days.  East is done on April 12th, West on the 13th.  Start the Finals on whatever night they want, run 10 days for best of 7.  Season will be over by April 30th.  Women can start Game 1 on May 1st.

I'll even help the women out.  Their college basketball season starts in September and their conference tournaments can be held when football is having their useless bowl games at the end of December, and then their tournament starts when the college playoffs end... or even during the week.  That way, they have mid-January to mid February all to themselves on the college basketball front.  They'll still have their 2.5 months before their WNBA season starts.

Everyone wins.  No drawn out NBA season or playoffs.  NBA teams will jack up their prices to ensure revenue, stars will play more games, the league even gets more playoff games.  They also have the joy of putting their money where their virtue signaling mouths are, in helping the WNBA because there's no concurrent games for competition and giving the women the platform to play the exact same game.  The WNBA wins because they get every opportunity to draw the same revenue as the men by playing the same game with the same rules, for the same period of time, with the same playoff structure.  They also get the ability to play more games to increase their gate.  Their fans get more games to go see and the players have a bigger platform.
