Private vehicles could soon capture evidence and report speeding vehicles to authorities

DETROIT (WKRC) - The Ford Motor Company is attempting to patent a camera system that reports speeding vehicles to authorities.

According to WXIN, a patent application was filed by Ford titled "Systems and Methods for Detecting Speeding Violations." The application was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on July 18, per the station.

Ford initially filed for the patent on January 12, 2023.

The station reported that Ford discusses using vehicles to monitor each other's speed in the application.

- How Ford's system reportedly works, per WXIN:

When an equipped automobile detects a nearby vehicle is traveling over the posted speed limit, it will use onboard cameras to capture an image of the speeder.
The equipped vehicle will then be able to send a report containing both speed data and pictures of the speeding vehicle directly to law enforcement or roadside monitoring units.
Car Scoops reported that authorities will also receive GSP location data.
Ford said in its application that the surveillance vehicles would make law enforcement's job easier because they wouldn't need to quickly identify violations and engage in pursuits, per WXIN.
Ford added that some of the work could be delegated to self-driving vehicles, which could also be equipped to detect speeders.
According to the station, because real officers wouldn't be present to witness the alleged speeding violation, it remains unclear what legal argument the automaker would have if it tried to implement the technology.

Speed cameras currently serve as stationary enforcement of speed limits, although they can only issue tickets based on a vehicle's license plate number because they are unable to confirm the driver's identity.

WXIN noted that Ford often files patent applications for emerging auto technology, but not all of those technologies make their way to production.

Does the person that owns that vehicle know that could take place?

If I am a buyer of a new ford I am just going to put a piece of tape on the camera. YOU are not the cops and YOU do not get to make ME into a cop just because you made the car.

I am a pretty loyal Ford guy (fuk you, @thegeneral,btw) but no way in hell I'm buying a car that's a narc. Does this system also screw the driver when they decide to go 15 over to pass some Prius that can't make speed?

Yes, it has an arm and takes a selfie of itself.

If it’s in a Ford it will breakdown along the side of the road so nothing to worry about.

Another reason to never buy a Ford. Won’t ever catch me wasting $$$ on one

50 bucks says their long term goal is to lobby the government to make it a requirement in the name of safety, then license it to other companies.

Being serious this tech could be for anything. People already do this type of stuff voluntarily for insurance for instance.

I doubt someone’s Taurus will start reporting you to the Feds without you giving it the ok anytime soon.

I dunno man. California is starting to charge drivers by the mile now since they can’t get their greedy hands on the EV gas tax. I can 100% see California doing this under the guise of “public safety” and fining ppl who don’t comply.

I will! But I won't. I should have been more specific: I'm a loyal Ford TRUCK guy. Cars are for women, wimps and young Asian dudes who fap to Fast and Furious movies.

I drive a limited 4x4 tundra

But yea, used to like the F250s but had too many of my friends have them & they get so many problems with them. I know it’s not them all but it is a nice way to bust balls with ppl

By the mile is prolly a better way to tax honestly. If they do that they should remove some other taxes tho which I’m guessing won’t be happening.

Of course not. You think they’d be willing to give up a tax venue they already established? If they switched it to just by the mile it would be different. Next thing you know, they’ll try taxing the air for ppl flying drones. Or if someone makes an EV boat you can bet they’ll try to tax them some other way as well. It’s sickening really

Tundra might be my next truck if I'm not tired of parking something that big and they design them to look cooler (although some look pretty badass). Love driving the full size trucks and never want to be without one, but they are not made for daily driving even in smaller cities like I live in. Parking in a ramp, which I do regularly, is a giant PITA.

Oh I agree. I LOVE the bigger trucks a lot better than mid size or small trucks. I went a few years when I was younger with a car & no truck. You don’t realize how much you need a truck until you Don’t have one. But yea, driving a big truck & parking it in a bigger city is a pain in the ass. It’s also why I’m looking at getting a convertible to drive around. I want something smaller I can whip around downtown in & also go for a weekend drive. Looking at older, luxury cars for that

This is what I thought when I first started reading the article.  There does not to be any revolutionary technology in this patent.  Measure speed, take a photo, send data.  No rocket surgery here.

They are just putting a stake in the ground for if this type of thing is ever implemented, so they can claim invention.  Tech companies do this all the time.

Bad publicity on this one, though.  As this thread shows, most people will presume that they are imminently implementing this.

This and reduced speeds will reduce the climate emergency.

Seems like it would make more sense for the car to record its own driver for speeding.

I'm with you on this.

Prius drivers are pretentious dweebs - we should run them off the road and take pictures/videos of that and send it to youtube.

Plenty of pantywaists driving trucks too, no doubt. Prius drivers own their pretentiousness because they have no choice. Dudes drivin 3/4 ton lifted trucks with a rollbar and brush guard riding on 34"+ tires with the offroad package that refuse to drive on gravel are prolly worse.
