Harris promises to go tough on border security

The vice president’s forceful remarks came at a rally in Arizona.

Democrats have typically shied away from the issue, but Harris’ camp has suggested a more aggressive posture, framing her as tough on the border throughout her career. Harris’ remarks Friday were similar to a new campaign ad up on TV earlier in the morning that pushed a tough-on-immigration message.

“As vice president, she backed the toughest border control bill in decades. And as president, she will hire thousands more border agents and crack down on fentanyl and human trafficking. Fixing the border is tough. So is Kamala Harris,” a voice read over videos of Harris’ political career.

Josh Ulibarri, an Arizona-based Democratic pollster, said the message was “smart, strategic, aggressive and … well-aligned with what the swingier Arizona audiences need and want to hear from Democrats at this time” — particularly Hispanic men and white suburban women in this border state, he said.

“We need to neutralize the [immigration] issue, so we can give clarity to voters on abortion, on economic conversation and the risks Trump presents.”

Earlier this year, when Biden still led the ticket, Democrats tried to move to the center on the issue — leaning heavily on the failed bipartisan border security effort in the Senate. But it was not obvious that Harris — who adopted much more progressive stances on immigration as a senator and a presidential candidate in 2019 — would follow suit.

My favorite was her trying to insinuate she had been to the border only for the interviewer to say “you’ve never been to the border” and her responding “I’ve never been to Europe either” She got called out on national television for never having been to the border (after trying to make it seem like she had been) & then doubled down trying to make a joke out of it. And the fact that these far left cultists trust her with ANYTHING is astounding after that

It didn't really matter, as Biden got Republicans to agree to a bipartisan bill on immigration reform that was practically a wish list for the GOP (even Lindsay Graham praised it) but Trump shot down the deal because he didn't want Biden to be given credit for it.

Of course there are asylum seekers. And refugees. And people who illegally cross the border. And legal entrants to this country who choose to overstay their welcome (by far these are the largest group of undocumented immigrants who come here.) 

To enforce the laws we already have requires more money for the ICE and  patrol. That is the domain of Congress. It was part of the spending package that Trump ordered killed.

The asylum seeker thing is way overblown.  But coming from the guy who didn’t know  asylees had to stop in the first country available, it’s not surprising.
