White House Freezes Spending

Recommended Posts

Sucks to be an American I guess

Quote

A memo from the White House budget office is calling for a spending freeze on federal assistance by 5 p.m. Tuesday, which could affect everything from aid to nonprofits, universities, small business loans and state and local government grants.

The freeze could have wide-ranging implications, with the White House noting that $3 trillion was spent in 2024 on federal assistance programs.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday this is a "temporary pause" to make sure these organizations not conflicting with President Trump's executive actions and orders.

Good thing that laws haven't been created to address this or he would be in big trouble from Congress.  Think if there was a law that barred the president from ever impounding mandatory spending or having to seek congresses permission to impound discretionary spending.

Impoundment Control Act

Why are people upset with this?

1) It's illegal.  The president can't decide to not spend money that has been authorized by Congress to spend.

2) It's hurting people.  Everything from medicaid to school lunches to research projects to small businesses.  This hurts real Americans.

Unfortunately the president doesn't care about either, do you?

Does it matter? Congress won’t challenge him and the SC already decided he can’t be held accountable.

Because Trump did it.

Had Biden done this it would have been hailed as bold leadership.

I am fascinated by people who would rather harm themselves and others than concede the ideological landscape.  Just crazy.

No, 80 million Americans rely on Medicaid in some shape or form.

Right, liberals would have called out Biden.....laughable.

Then again, Biden would not serve the interests of the American people, he served the party instead.

People directly receiving aid will not be affected by this pause.

However, we will no longer be sending $80 million a week to terrorists in Afghanistan.

Of course they would have if he had make a similar move that had such potentially catastropic consequences for 80 million Americans.

See for yourself. Medicaid is trending:

Reports of Medicaid portals down in all 50 states in spite of the second clarifying memo from the White House claiming Medicaid is unaffected.

Confusion among nonprofits who administer aid and healthcare providers. Lawsuits flying.

This unlawful funding freeze is the most chaotic thing Trump has done thus far this term.

Nonprofit clinics will go under quickly if this continues. Many of them serve Americans in remote areas. i.e. Republican voters.

Early childhood education programs and federal health researchers being affected. Chaos and confusion.

The problem is not necessarily the (legal) steps Trump has taken, it's the complete lack of planning being exemplified. Seems like there was little or no thought to the downstream effects, which is not really a quality I prefer to see in leadership. Most of us would be fired from our jobs if we pulled a stunt even remotely close to this.

Honestly, I'm sort of glad this is happening. I hope Trump is able to make all the changes he believes this country needs. It may be the strong medicine needed to heal the country. There is a lot of scamming the government going on, a lot of waste. Good for him for trying to stop the leaky damn.

I'm not against a little short term pain for long term gain. If Trump is serious about getting spending under control, good for him, it's long overdue. There is a lot of fraud and waste. But these programs also help a lot of people that otherwise would not get it. Those are the people being hurt by this. You wanna target waste? Start at the focking pentagon.

Well, I know that's right. However, he has already targeted them. The Pentagon is the government and all government spending and hiring has been halted.

Funding for the pentagon has been suspended? Got a link? I haven't seen that.

Here’s an idea. If you want to do something like this, maybe make it targeted and not a sweeping shut down that will hurt the poorest among us.

SMH that this is being cheered.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked a Trump administration freeze on federal grants and loans that could total trillions of dollars.

U.S. District Judge Loren L. AliKhan blocked the action Tuesday afternoon, minutes before it was set to go into effect. The administrative stay pauses the freeze until Monday.

I guess he can't do what he pleases. Nice try though.
