LIBERATION DAY: US economy now in reverse

Recommended Posts

The way most news outlets are presenting this, there are two guys competing for Trump’s ear right now: Scott Bessant represents Wall Street, Musk, the billionaire “globalist” group, and he’s trying to convince Trump to agree to new trade deals that would result in lower tariffs on all sides. This is the sort of result @Strikeand @Engorgeous George are anticipating, and it would be wonderful. It would very likely send the stock market back up, lead us to economic prosperity and be a political victory for Trump. It still wouldn’t resolve China but it might be enough to proclaim this a win.

But the other guy is Peter Navarro. An anti-globalist conspiracy theorist with views somewhat similar to @Frozenbeernuts here (though without the anti-Semitism) he wants to reshape the world economy, and believes honestly that permanent high tariffs are the way to achieve this. He doesn’t want any deals that would end this confrontation; he wants the confrontation. He’s been saying this for 20 years.

Wall Street is praying that ultimately Trump ignores Navarro and listens to Bessant. So am I. We’ll see.

I disagree.  Our debt was continuing to climb.  Our country has been moving further and further to the left culturally.  I'm tired of the woke culture.  I'm tired of the overspending.  I'm tired of seeing companies move out of the country.

I think people have had a false sense of security.

Yeah, Tariffs will are really going to help.

YouTube star MrBeast slams Trump's tariffs, says its "way cheaper" to make his products overseas

From CNN's Anna Cooban and Rob North

MrBeast has weighed in on US President Donald Trump’s tariff policy: it’s bad for his business.

The YouTube and TikTok star, who sells a range of chocolate bars, said in a Tuesday post on X that “ironically because of all the new tariffs it is now way cheaper to make our chocolate bars (that) we sell globally NOT in America.”

He added in a separate post that tariffs could be a “nail in the coffin” for small businesses.

This simply isn't true.  There are many economists that believe we avoid a recession.   Stop the hyperbole.

I was alive when only Nixon could go to China.  Now, amybe I will live through Only Trump could stop trade woith China.

Yesterday I took note of the vehicles on my block.  Ten homes, 35 vehicles, a remarkable 3.5 vehicles per home.  More than one vehicle per person.  What interested me was that out of the 35 there was one Ford and one Dodge.  There were multiple BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes.  Plenty of Toyotas and Lexis'.  A few Hyundais.  No Hondas which surprised me. Two Nissans.  I guess my block is a microcosm of our trade imbalance.  I am part of the problem if it is a problem.  Ten years ago my driveway had two Fords and a Dodge, today, a Nissan and two Hyundais

I thought you lived near the edge of the grid.  That seems like a posh collection of car makes for such a location.  :dunno:

This is is a good point. But you and @Strike and many others continue to assume that the ultimate result of these actions will be trade deals in which tariffs are lower than they are now. I hope you’re right about this. But it flies in this face of Trump’s repeated statements that he is doing this not to bring about better trade deals but instead to return manufacturing back to the USA.

It also doesn’t solve China. If these tariffs hold up we are basically cutting off trade with China. Bad for them for sure but also very bad for us. There is no way our economy won’t be severely hurt by that no matter what other trade deals are achieved.

We get it. You're scared. Why do you feel the need to tell everyone that every 10 minutes?

Ironic since Trump imposed the largest tax hike in world history last week.

It will 100% hurt small businesses. Wal-MArt can swallow the tariffs and they already reportedly view this as a way to establish more dominance over their competitors. But the local businesses and small town main street places will be hammered by this.

Do you not understand that if Trump never started with the tariffs then China wouldn't retaliate?

The US is running a trade deficit with China - the difference between what it imports and exports - of $295bn in 2024. That's a considerable trade deficit, equivalent to around 1% of the US economy.

Dont worry tax breaks for the rich during budget reconciliation will even things out.

Actually I'm curious about this, given the current climate I don't think the GOP will be pushing for that as they had planned, but we'll see.

I’m actually going to try and help you out here. It’s not my posts that annoy people; it’s your incessant, meaningless responses to them.
if you think my posts are worth ignoring, then by all means ignore them. If you think they’re wrong then feel free to disagree, offer a rebuttal or counter argument. But this constant “nobody cares”, along with personal insults offers nothing of value. If you’re trying to make me feel bad, I assure you it doesn’t. It’s just annoying.

So what? Perhaps you can explain what nobody else has managed to do: why exactly is a trade deficit bad for us?

I’m honestly stunned it isn’t far higher, considering their cheaper labor and worker protections.

So he just surrendered on the tariffs thankfully- except for China. Don’t know where that goes.

Should be good for the Dow though.

That's why the market paused mid-morning. Inside baseball said Trump would capitulate. Thank god.

The maga shoppers will still take the brunt on the China taxes though. And manufacturers who produce in China like Musk.

Bessent is saying if you kiss Trump's ass then you get your tariff lifted.

I had heard this theory.  He only put these tariffs in place so the rest of the world could kiss his ass.  I thought it was crazy but apparently not.
