easilyscan 925 Posted May 16 Other than a few, like Rand Paul for instance, I don't think either side cares, but I also think it has to be in the back of their minds. I'm not sure what would trigger it, reaching a certain $ amount, another world war, or something else ? I think they all know it will have to be addressed at some point, but as a group, they don't have the guts to do the right thing. I think their next move will be related to Social Security (notice I didn't refer to that as an entitlement) it really upsets me when people do. Medicare, maybe, but most people paid into SS for multiple decades, & if both sides of the aisle hadn't, borrowed and spent from it over the years, it wouldn't be the issue that it is today. Congress 1st focked over recipients in 1983. How were they able to do that ? Because like an article I once read stated, because the people it would affect were 12 years old at the time. Congress bent them over again 10 years later in 1993. Ex President Joe Biden voted in favor both times. 1

Voltaire 5,316 Posted May 17 This was always going to be a big problem for the GOP once it became apparent that they would have such narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress. Different factions want different things, some are hardline balanced budgeters. It will be an incredible balancing act on the part of Mike Johnson if he can thread the needle to find the votes to pull it off.
The Real timschochet 6,765 Posted May 18 Trump, back in town, is planning to put a lot of pressure on the reluctant conservatives this week. I’m betting they will get this done. But it’s going to be extremely unpopular with the public, especially when the cuts to Medicare/Medicaid become apparent. If this bill passes it will be, along with the tariffs, the main campaign theme for the Democrats next year.

So do they REALLY care? Way to spin it. This bill will stop illegal immigrants from receiving Medicaid, AND will provide a tax cut to US Citizens. It's a tax-cut bill. 1

Nobody is arguing that point. Simply pointing out that for all the energy and ink spilled over how wonderful DOGE was, and how finally a POTUS is serious about reducing waste and fraud, this tax cut, which overwhelmingly favors high earners, will add between $3-$4T to the deficit. That, to us, indicates that he does not really care about the deficit and that the performance art centered on the (often illegal) DOGE cuts was propaganda. The true purpose was to rid Trump of many of the persistent guardrails that limited him in his first term.

I'm not commenting on any past cuts. I notice that you did not comment on anything else I wrote, though. Look, you're going to continue hating libs and their policies, that's no skin off my back. Hate away. Some libs do truly suck and many of their policies are awful. Just don't lose sight of what's going on. I'm not here to rail against conservatism, I'm just pointing out that the guy you voted for is a supreme POS that is upending what this country is supposed to be about. I think you guys have all been inundated by the message your media choices have repeated for years: that ALL liberal policies suck, that libs are all terrible human beings, and that anything you do in the name of stopping their agenda is justifiable. Meanwhile, the things you're scared libs will do if they are in power are actually being done by your guy. Stay Republican/conservative, by all means. We need a counter balance to some of the BS Democrats spew. But your support of this guy completely undermines what you claim you want, IMO. 2
