titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted June 25, 2018 So this is my last week of classes. The principal said he wanted foreign culture, so today I, obliged. I did a school of rock type lesson. Taught them the names of different musical genres, and then played a video of an example. The list... Pop - Backstreet Boys - I want it that way (know your audience it is preteen girls) Classical - Beethovens 5th Jazz - Myles Davis so what Latin - Despacito by the beibs (again, know the audience) Country - wagon wheel by hootie. Figured they should see a black person. Rap - lose yourself by Eminem. Its damn hard to find a rap song with clean lyrics and a video with no salacious hos. Folk - riptide by Vance joy (acoustic) And rock - welcome to the Jungle. GNR I was surprised by the results. I knew backstreet and beiber would be hits. Hootie was more liked than I would have thought. Hated Eminem. But I was surprised they didnt like GNR. Although I did have one group of boys come up and say they loved it, and wanted more like it. So I wrote down Led Zeppelin and the stones and told them to download it. I like to think I changed a couple of lives today.
Filthy Fernadez 2,696 Posted June 25, 2018 Rap - lose yourself by Eminem. Its damn hard to find a rap song with clean lyrics and a video with no salacious hos. That isn't rap then.
Frozenbeernuts 1,652 Posted June 25, 2018 I watched a video on mumble rap. It was amusing to hear all the old school rappers talk about how garbage everything is today
wiffleball 4,640 Posted June 25, 2018 Wow that's incredibly stupid. I mean simply, the part about Hootie being representative of country? Are you mother looking kidding me? When historians look back, that will exactly be the time when they note the death of country music. I'm surprised you didn't list Dave Matthews as a representative of rap music. wiffleball 4,640 Posted June 25, 2018 Backstreet Boys? What? The Everly Brothers were busy?

I dont necessarily disagree. I tried to choose things theyd like. I knew hank and Charlie Daniels wouldnt fly. As to the Backstreet Boys, Ive been playing random pop sh!t all year between classes. Theyve seen much of the newer stuff. Part of the idea was to try to introduce them to stuff they dont know that they like. Based on how they assiduously wrote down the names, Id say that worked. GuardBum 73 Posted June 25, 2018 I like a lot of what you did as you did go with your audience but Tim McGraw or Carrie Underwood would have been a better county rep. Regulate (Warren G) or Mama Said Knock You Out could have been your Rap. Folk - Bon Iver? K.D. Lang? Rock is way too big to narrow down like you probably did. If you were going classic rock generally Nirvana or Aerosmith would be safer "like" picks. If you went current, Imagine Dragons are the in, now, band. posty 2,296 Posted June 25, 2018 Pop - Backstreet Boys - I want it that way (know your audience it is preteen girls) I would have done something by N'Sync... Much bigger than the Backstreet Boys... Rap - lose yourself by Eminem. Its damn hard to find a rap song with clean lyrics and a video with no salacious hos. DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince? Voltaire 4,559 Posted June 25, 2018 Alan Jackson's Chatahoochie may have been a better country song representation. Or any of the ubersexy 90s women.

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted June 26, 2018 So today one of the kids said that Axl Rose was a mei nv, or pretty girl. I told him he is a dude. That all of them were dudes. They didnt believe me at all.

I had it accompany this graphic set thing in honor of the actress Brittany Murphy (wasn't a particular fan but the community was honoring her) and broke my own heart with those first lines. And I hope you let them know it was a cover of an old crow song  Sure. My sixth grade Chinese students would understand all that. I do well when I can get them to understand basic commands. I chose that version over old crow because the video has lots of scenery around Nashville. I say thats my hometown, they like it, yadda yadda.

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted June 26, 2018 Link?!!!! You start the album on the third roar of the MGM lion. It syncs up fairly well. Like the intro to money is right when it goes to color in oz as I recall. We did it in college while baked. Then we spent the next three years trying to find others that match.
