edjr 5,564 Posted February 1, 2016 The World Health Organization has declared that the Zika virus poses a global public health emergency. The infection, which experts fear is spreading very fast, has been linked to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains. This alert puts Zika in the same category of international concern as Ebola and will help fast-track research and aid toward fighting the infection. Although the mosquito-borne virus’s symptoms are relatively mild, it is believed to be linked to a surge in cases of microcephaly, a condition in which a baby is born with an abnormally small head and brain. WHO chief Margaret Chan said the link between the Zika virus and microcephaly was “strongly suspected but not yet scientifically proven.” On its website, WHO says it is deeply concerned about this rapidly evolving situation for four main reasons: the possible association of infection with birth malformations and neurological syndromes the potential for further international spread given the wide geographical distribution of the mosquito vector the lack of population immunity in newly affected areas and the absence of vaccines, specific treatments, and rapid diagnostic tests Also, conditions associated with this year’s El Niño weather pattern are expected to increase mosquito populations greatly in many areas. https://www.yahoo.com/health/zika-virus-declared-global-health-emergency-185933502.html Here we go again! While there certainly have been unintended consequences of man fiddling with nature, you'd need a mechanism why the GMO bugs promote Zika. Sandwich zika reports with buzzy words like outbreak and random pics of african (maybe its south american, theres no real difference) kids with flies buzzing around them and bellies sticking out between Trump reports. Thats your broadcast for weeks, then just kick back and sell advertising. We have been exploiting poor african and south american kids for years. I would probably be shocked to find out if they get a dime of that "just 50 cents a day" campaign scam we have been running for decades. Anyone ever know or meet a kid who says "Oh yea I was one of those 50 cents kids, it really helped me out and I made a life for myself." Also I guarantee that baby head syndrom is not linked at all to zika and thats just BS.

Snopes is on the case: http://www.snopes.com/zika-virus-gmo-mosquitoes/ I would be interested to see where these gmo mosquitoes were released and where the first instances of the Zika Virus and microcephaly occurred. My guess is they would overlap pretty well, but that's a guess. An uneducated one at that.
penultimatestraw 473 Posted February 2, 2016 I would be interested to see where these gmo mosquitoes were released and where the first instances of the Zika Virus and microcephaly occurred. My guess is they would overlap pretty well, but that's a guess. An uneducated one at that. I don't have that data, but your premise/conspiracy theory is flawed. The GMO mosquitoes pass an ineffective gene to their offspring, who die as larvae. Plus all the GMO mosquitoes are male, while only females do the biting (males feed on flower nectar). So they ain't spreading Zika or any other Arbovirus (Dengue, Chikungunya, West Nile, etc.). Zika has been around for years, but was only recently introduced in South America. Typically when a new infection sets in, there is little native immune resistance and epidemics can result. The problem is multifactorial, all related to booming mosquito populations: 1. Increased habitat, in part related to climate change. 2. International travel/commerce making introduction of new pathogens to virgin areas more frequent. 3. Overuse of some pesticides, with development of resistance among insect populations. Meanwhile, some older, more potent pesticides may still work but have other downstream consquences. 4. Human overpopulation with poor sanitation, especially stagnant water. So again, how do you think the GMO mosquitoes promote Zika?

penultimatestraw 473 Posted February 2, 2016 Zika is a disease in many countries but the birth defects are contained to brazil. How is the WHO coming to a conclusion so quickly on the link. There are a few possibilities: 1. The connection exists elsewhere, but Brazil is just the first place where outbreaks have been large enough and people have made the connection to microcephaly. 2. There is something different about the population genetics that makes Brazilians more susceptible to the development of birth defects. 3. For Fandandy: the GMOs are causing it!!!!!!!! As an aside, other viral illnesses have been associated with fetal microcephaly, notably Rubella.
