FOLEY CATHETER INSTRUCTIONS

 

 

The foley catheter is a tube placed into the bladder and held in place by a balloon. This allows for the urine to flow continuously into the drainage bag that is attached. When the smaller bag is being used it should remain on your inner thigh above the knee towards the groin region.

 

 

TO EMPTY THE DRAINAGE BAG:

 

1. Wash your hands

 

2. Twist the cap on the end of the drainage bag, or open the clamp on the larger

overnight bag, and drain the urine

 

3. Twist the cap to close in the opposite direction or close the clamp on the

overnight bag

 

4. Wash your hands

 

 

TO SWITCH YOUR DRAINAGE BAGS:

 

 

1. Wash your hands

 

2. Empty the bag (as described above)

 

3. Disconnect the catheter from the drainage tube

 

4. Re-connect the catheter and the new drainage bag

 

5. Wash your hands

 

* BE CAREFUL NOT TO PULL ON THE FOLEY CATHETER WHEN CHANGING OR EMPTYING THE BAG

 

* DO NOT TOUCH THE OPEN END OF THE CATHETER OR DRAINAGE BAG

 

 

TO CLEAN YOUR DRAINAGE BAG:

 

 

1. Wash your hands

 

2. Empty the bag (as described above)

 

3. Wash in warm water not hot

 

4. Rinse with a tablespoon of white vinegar and water

 

5. Leave the cap open and hang the bag to air dry.

 

 

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER:

 

• Wash the area around the catheter at the tip of your ###### with warm soapy water

and dry completely.

• Keep the area clean and dry

• Keep the drainage bag above the knee and on the inner portion of your thigh

• Keep the bag below the level of your bladder

• Keep the tubing free of kinks

• NEVER PULL ON YOUR CATHETER OR TRY TO REMOVE IT YOURSELF

• Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily

 

NOTIFY US:

 

• If urine stops draining into the bag

• There are clots in your urine

• Temperature above 101
