Grocery Store Ethics

Recommended Posts

......to remove the caps from the stems of mushrooms and just buy the caps? Also, is it OK to break the stalks off broccoli and just buy the crowns?

TIA. I'll answer yours.

You do this because you dont want to pay 85 cents a pound?

Mushrooms and broccoli are like $3 a pound. Those broccoli stalks are focking gross....and they're dense!

By that rationale, should we be able to peel bananas and oranges and weigh them afterwards as well?

The "high level" answer is that they are $3/pound due to supply and demand. It isnt unethical, you are effectively stealing by changing the formula for how they calculate a price point to make a profit.

Ah, but people take bananas off the bunch all the time that they don't want (either because they are too ripe or not ripe enough).

Do you do that?

If you don't like the stem, I think I have seen grocery stores sell them as florets.

LOL, that is different because they are still weighing aforementioned banana with the peel. Plus, the remaining bananas are still sellable - once they are ripe to a customers' liking. Some like them extra ripe for things like banana bread - while others will still eat them while crunchy and green.

Who's to say some guy won't come along that likes mushroom stems and brocolli stalks and will buy them?

They're still product. They're still there. Just like the over-ripe bananas.

That's like asking them to take off the weight of the bone in a tbone steak before pricing it.

Don't give up. I just want to establish if it is truly stealing or not. It's not like I'm going through the bulk candy and eating a handfull of gummy bears as I shop.

Think it is stealing because you take away the opportunity for people who don't mind the stalks to purchase it whole.

Also, I didn't think this question could be serious. Makes a mess too.

I have been thinking about opening a store that just sells the top of the mushroom. Just don't know what to do with the stumps. Maybe I can give them to a soup kitchen for the homeless or something.

you need a cleaner

also, it is completely stealing because the price of the items is averaged across the produce

I actually take the deli turkey out of the package, peel the skin off and ask them to weigh it again.

I'll have to say unethical.

Its like trying to make your drug dealer remove the seeds and stems from your baggie and having him weigh it again.

Not going to happen :overhead:

Customer is King! I say pick, prod, and remove anything you don't want. :overhead:

Maybe you should take this quesion to the "Customers Suck" bored? They would get a rise out of this one.

What, that they are looking at something pink and with veins, or the fact that I'm hung like a clothespin?

I often take a knife with me to the market, open up the packages tenderloin, removing all fat from the edges and then have them reweigh it for me. I also ask if they could use the price per pound for the ground beef. It is all just beef anyway, right?

This is one of the dumbest questions I have ever heard. Of course it is unethical.

I guess it depends (on the brocolli). I mean, there are definitely some stores that take no time or effort to trim their broccoli. I'm not going to pay for 3 pounds of woody stem that another decent store would have trimmed away. On those occasions, I've been known to snap off what I can use. Same with Ginger. Some stores just throw out these huge gnarled, multi-stemmed pieces of ginger that would occomodate an entire sushi restaurant for a weekend and have none in a reasonable size. In those cases, I've been known to snap off only what I need.

I remember an old George Carlin bit.

He was talking about shopping out of

other peoples shopping carts. His reasoning

was that until its paid for its still everyones and

free game. So if you see a bag of chips in someones

cart and remember that you didn't get any, then just take

theirs out of their cart.

I think he said something like " if I want to

shop out of your cart, I'll shop out of your cart.

He also said to never grocery shop while high.

You'll buy all kinds of crap you don't even need.

"Hmm, canned cans, I better get 2 of these".

:shocking:
