kilroy69 1,268 Posted January 8, 2008 No dominant players up in 2008. The Goose is the most dominant closer of all time. Its a shame it has taken him this long to get in. From espn "I'm going to unfurl this rant one final time: Goose Gossage was the most dominating closer ever. Ever. And I don't care who else you want to throw up there against him. Go right ahead. Want to take Mariano Rivera? Great. Let's compare them. Stacking up save totals doesn't work, because Gossage was pitching in a time when managers were mysteriously using their closers in an attempt to (gasp) win games, as opposed to just helping them pile up save totals. So let's toss out saves and stack up Rivera's 11 full seasons as a closer versus the Goose's first 11 full seasons as a closer. Want to pick a category? Be my guest. ERA? Gossage 2.21, Rivera 2.35. Strikeouts? Goose 8.54 whiffs per 9 innings, Rivera 8.09. Unhittability? Gossage 6.59 hits per 9 innings, Rivera 7.17. So … any more questions? And remember, the Goose was unleashing all that domination even though he was routinely being asked to pitch 100 to 141 innings (yep, 141) a year"

But Mariano has pitched in the steroid era so you have to look at those stats a little different.
kilroy69 1,268 Posted January 8, 2008 Is Andre Dawson part of the beginning of the "Steroid Era" ? He belongs to that group of players that played up north in the wasteland known as canuckland. So no one even saw him play.

If they don't let Big Mac in, then NOBODY from the steroid era should be voted in. Since we don't know who all did what, it's either all or nothing.

Since there wasn't testing and none of the big name roiders have enough balls to admit they were taking them, you have to go by sense of judgement. McGwire was definitely on them, so he shouldn't get in. Add to that, Palmiero, Giambi, Bonds, and Sosa. None of them should get in. There may be more. kilroy69 1,268 Posted January 8, 2008 why? Because Jim Rice did not get in again. I have to assume that next year he will. His numbers went up this year its his last year before he goes to the veterens vote. on a side note Rickey Henderson is on the ballot for the first time next year. I can sum up his speech for ya a year in advance because he will be a first ballot hof player. Rickeys speech Rickey had a long and fruitful career in which rickey was the best leadoff hitter dat the game have ever seen. Rickey stole bases like dey said something bad bout rickeys momma. Rickey can't believe it took rickey dis long to get on the ballot for the HOF. I mean do dees people know who rickey is? Rickey would like to thank all the little people who helped him get where he is today and most of all he would like to thank rickey. Because without you rickey none of dis could be made possible. He's definitely not a no-brainer, but I think he'll eventually get in. Very good RBI numbers.
kilroy69 1,268 Posted January 8, 2008 I just went back and looked at his career stats. He's definitely not a no-brainer, but I think he'll eventually get in. Very good RBI numbers. we're supposed to be comparing players to other players in their time, not anybody else's time. And that's where Rice becomes more than the sum of his 382 career homers. It tells you something that this guy was a top-five finisher in six MVP elections. It tells you something that, in his 12 seasons of domination from 1975 to '86, he led everyone in his league in homers, RBIs, runs, slugging and extra-base hits. It tells you something that in all of those categories except home runs, the only player even close to him was the great George Brett.

Voltaire 5,491 Posted January 9, 2008 Ozzie Focking Smith gets in on the first ballot and guys like Jim Rice, Alan Trammell and Jack Morris dont get a sniff? there may be more. Although his batting wasn't HOF material, Ozzy Smith had the most amazing glove ever. I suspect that this steroids era will blankout a lot of more recent players which will alow some deserving other names like these from previous generations to get in. edjr 6,898 Posted January 9, 2008 Assuming Rice gets in next year, it could shape up to be 2 of the most memorable HOF speechs ever. Jim Rice will speak for 90 seconds and Ricky Henderson will speak incoherently for 30 minutes. Seriously, will there be an interpreter for his HOF speech?
