Cowboys Release T.O.!

Recommended Posts

If that's true why are they cutting him then? Just because the media is obsessed with him?

A 1000yds and 10 TDs is no reason to cut him so if it's not his play.......

the media and their stories and obsession with it was more the

distraction than TO ever was

From the post it sounds like, well fock, I can't say it any clearer than he already did. The resulting media circus, not necessarily Owen's own actions, was what was detrimental to the team.

Yes... You're right... TO brought a whole new level of media coverage to the Cowboys and they are just not used to the media being all over them.

how soon we already forget Harrison's other two incidents

NY Times

PRO FOOTBALL; Harrison Confronts Ball Boy

Published: January 5, 2003

The Jets are looking into a pregame incident involving a Jets ball boy and Colts receiver Marvin Harrison today. Harrison was catching passes from Peyton Manning before warm-ups. Nearby, Jets punter Matt Turk was practicing and the ball boy, Matt Prior, was retrieving balls for him.

Harrison apparently became upset that the punts were sailing near him and Manning, and he confronted Prior, knocking him to the ground, according to Marty Lyons, a former Jet. Lyons, an analyst on the Jets’ radio broadcast, reported that Harrison put his hands on Prior’s neck before security guards ended the confrontation. The Jets confirmed that there was physical contact between Harrison and Prior and said that the league was aware of the incident.

Three boys allege that Marvin Harrison and two other men attacked them

http://archives.starbulletin.com/2005/03/29/news/story3.html

TO takes 1,000,000 times the abuse and hell by fans and media that Harrison ever did.

yep...but the gangbangers keep on gangbanging. Well...at least one them got what he deserved.

Yes I'm sure Jerry Jones hated seeing the Cowboys mentioned all the time on TV. That sounds so much like him.

What trips me out about T.O. is how polarizing he is. People either absolutely hate the guy, while others like to watch the show and respect his talents. The media has a complete hard-on for him. Whether good or bad. GettenHuge is correct. ESPN will talk about this release, what all teams are interested, Ed Werder will come out with a "behind the scenes" story of how it all went down and what T.O. had for dinner last night. It is borderline hilarious.

But if you strip this down, the main reason he is being released and a lot of teams will not pick him up is because he is 35 years old and his prime is in the rearveiw mirror. He still has a some left in the tank as he is always in great shape/condidtion, but alot of teams would rather go younger in a risk/reward scenario. Somebody will sign him though and I hope it works out. Or not. Either way it is good televison. :pointstosky:

My take on the guy is this. He was real focking good. He stayed in peak physical shape, and came to play every single game. Can't say that about alot of guys. He played on that not healed broke foot for the Eagles in the Superbowl. The guy competes hard and he is good at what he does.

His downside derives simply that he is a sore loser. He doesn't take failure very well and that spills over to finger pointing and pouting. Said finger pointing has a tendency to drive a wedge between him and a few teammates (QB's). That is his achilles heel.

Other than that I like the guy. He doesn't get into trouble (legal). He plays his butt off. And he was/is real focking good.

I haven't made anything up, I am positing a likely scenario based on FACTS that are known. You, on the other hand, are simply pulling things out of your ass.

I have you on ignore, but for some reason I keep get suckered into responding to you. Your combination of arrogance and stupidity are interesting in a really pathetic sort of way.

Actually the reports said the man went there and started a fight with Marvin, so my stuff actually did happen, now how Marvin felt about it, has never been answered and as I don't recall anything being said from him regarding the issue. So I was just giving another scenario on what he wanted. So I wasn't pulling things completely from my ass as you stated, but that is ok, I am not so easy to get tempered over a forum discussion as most of you Belicheat supporters are.

And your scenario is based on one of nine stories that were given, it just happens to be the one you choose to believe. Funny how that I am the one pulling stuff out of my ass, when you are picking one of nine stories to base your facts about.

But if Marvin getting away with stuff makes you mad, I will repeat, I love it. I hope he did it and gets off, because I know that will burn you even more and most likely cause you to have a heart attack because you let something so little affect you in such a big way.

I find it funny you have me on ignore. I don't have any NE Pats fan on ignore because I enjoy your stupidity and arrogance as much as you must enjoy mine, I just don't get eaten up by it and have to ignore or block anyone. That is ok, I know I am a better person than you are.

So Parrot, have a good day and try to relax. Don't get bent out of shape or go crying to your spouse, mother, grandmother or whoever you go to cry on. It will be ok. I promise.

My take on T.O. by Wiffleball. 35th grade.

First off, I'm not defending T.O. let's be clear about that. However, I do feel badly for the guy to this extent:

Terrell Owens is immature & hugely divisive. Like many of the headcases in the NFL (Moss, Glenn, Owens) he had no father figure in his life. This doesn't get noted enough. I'd love to see someone do a sociology paper on this. The guys I listed are noted for not having a father figure growing up. There has to be a connection there. I'm not saying that single moms all raise crazy kids, but there has to be a connection. The guy never had a Dad to pop him upside the head when he pulled this shiit. Terry Glenn? Jesus, if you know his story, he deserves to be the prototypical headcase WR.

The closest thing these guys have to a father figure is oftentimes their agent. It's not a surprise who many of these guys' agent is: Drew Rosenhaus. You take a kid who is not intelligent, not worldly, has had no OTHER male in their life looking out for them, and it's easy pickings. "Terrell, you're just not being respected. They don't love you, they're just USING YOU for your unbelievable talent. I'm here for you. It is my NUMBER ONE job to look out for YOU." - It's easy to see how this crap happens. If you remember, that's when it started in Philly - when Rosenhaus took over as his agent. Now, there was trouble before. Nothing I list herein is the SOLE reason for Terrel's troubles, but there is no doubt that he is manipulated, even victimized by leaches like Rosenhaus. Owens had a great thing going in Philly. Rosenhaus filled his head with a lot of stupid shiit - and you saw what happened.

Next, Terrell Owens is clearly bipolar. I have people that I love who are bipolar. It's not an insult. It's not a weakness. It's a sickness. It can be managed. There are meds for it. The best thing anybody could do for him is to get him into a treatment faciilty where they could stabilize his meds (takes a bit of experimentation) get him in counseling and get him on track. To my knowledge, nobody's done that. His friends, family, employers and agents take that hit. Mental health is still the big taboo. - Especially in the NFL. And unfortunately, that's the root of a lot of problematic behavior we see.

Last, the media is a pack of jackals. You take that combination above and add in the fact that you have 95 people surrounding you everywhere you go - baiting you, asking you leading questions, just waiting - KNOWING that you'll eventually snap and there WILL be a soundbite. And ESPN lives for that shiit - NEEDS that shiit. All those inane half-hour shows 8 hours a day BEG for content. - And T.O. provides "content". I wonder how well we'd do living like that. If I'm the next owner, Terrel's off limits. - And a gag order is in place for him. May or may not work, but setting him up there to fail is a sure bet he will.

Are there far worse things than being an occasionally bad teammate? GD sure there are. Harrison, Little, Lewis - they don't near the villany, near the scrutiny, near the investigation that Owens does. People can't WAIT for the next story. And unfortunately, when you take all of the above, there will be a next story.

In a lot of ways, I feel badly for the guy. Yeah, he's a millionaire. Yeah, he says some boneheaded things. Yeah, he's got all the money he'll ever need. And yes, he brings much, but not all of this on himself sometimes. Mental health, depression - doesn't give a shiit about your bank account. It's merciless and relentless. I owe my Dad a lot. I can't imagine what I'd be like without him. Terrell never had that. He's surrounded by media, agents and sycophants all living off of him one way or another. Now he's got some jerkoff selling him the idea of a reality show. - The last thing he needs. Seems like the guy doesn't have anyone really looking out for him. Yeah, he's a grown man. So was my brother. Age ain't no bulletproof shield.

Anyhoo, just wanted to get that off my chest. I'll be laughing and busting on him just like the rest of you guys again real soon.

Great post. When I get to criticizing some of these guys, I tend to forget the impact my dad has had in my life. Especially in his dealings with Parcells, you can tell the lack of a father figure is a big part of how he acts.

They need a solid third receiver who will complement their mainstays. They don't need TO. I would much rather they use the money to shore up the defense.

NE just got Greg Lewis from Philly for a 5th rounder this year.....Pats also get a philly 7th rounder next year

Saw that. Not sure Greg Lewis is the guy I had in mind, but maybe they see something I don't. They sure did with Wes Welker.

Not sure how he benefits Pats atm either, but I even knew Welker was a great pickup for the Pats when they grabbed him from Miami.

I figured he'd be a solid addition. I didn't think he would put up 110 catches two years running, seeing as how he didn't have 100 catches for his career at that point.

I will give you that. He turned into a catch ###### with the Pats, even if he doesn't get a lot of yards at times.

I have not read one response in this thread... That said... T.O. might actually get "black balled" from the league, where by NO team may decide to pick him up, despite his talents... I hope he has invested his money wisely... Cause it might be his last NFL dime... MB

ps. He might be the next guy on Joe's vs Jocks... LOL

A big thanks to the fans — you've been awesome! I look forward to the upcoming season and continuing to play in the NFL.

HA-HA!

Maybe Denver?

Agent Drew Rosenhaus says he expects Terrell Owens to "have a deal in place (with a team) by the end of next week, if not sooner."

Rosenhaus sure sounds confident, but he's got to say this to drum up a market. "There are several teams that are interested in signing Terrell," Rosenhaus claims. "I have been in negotiations with these teams. I will not identify these teams at this time." The Broncos are looking like a big sleeper to pursue Owens and the Raiders are tentatively expected to show interest, but it would still be a surprise if Owens signs quickly.

That makes sense. Brandon Marshall appears to be headed down the wrong path. The Broncos neeed to bring in a savvy veteren to teach him how to be a consumate professional. :headbanger:

Im late to the argument here and havent read most of the thread but I'll throw my 2 cents in on TO. Let me preface my comments by saying that TO can only blame himself for being cut b/c he knows his reputation and continues to be a drama queen. I truly believe the guy has some sort of chemical imbalance or emotional disorder.

BUT I do believe that he is an easy scapegoat and his divisiveness is greatly exaggerated and in many ways CREATED by the media. What exactly did he do that was so bad in Dallas? He said he should get the ball more. Shocker. And he supposedly was upset that Romo and Witten were drawing up plays behind his back. Ok? If that was enough to get him cut then Dallas should have never signed him or given him an extension in the first place.

Dallas goes 14-2 last year and everything is fine until the choke it up in the playoffs. Then all of a sudden this year they go 9-7 (largely due to injuries) and now they have a "toxic" locker room. I just dont buy it. Ed Werder reports that "according to sources" several players like Roy Williams and MBIII's association with TO affected them negatively. Is that sports journalism or a soap opera blog? Its BS.

I just dont see how this move makes Dallas better. TO was supposed to be the problem in SF and with Garcia. Well since he left they havent been to the playoffs and Garcia has had 1 and a half decent seasons out of 5. In Philly they go to the Super Bowl with TO and havent been back since. And somehow McNabb is still having issues. The fact is that both QBs had by far their best seasons and both teams enjoyed better success with TO than without him.

We'll see how it works out for Dallas but I think they'll find out that Roy Williams is all potential with limited production and that Romo, Witten, and the running game all greatly benefited from TO's presence. IMO this also drops Romo from the top tier of FF Qbs. They still have a lot of talent on that team but I dont but the argument that cutting TO helps them at all.

Of course, let's not forget that Drew also told just last month that there's absolutely positively 100% NO chance that T.O. gets cut by the Cowboys.

Just sayin', I wouldn't trust this guy's word to be worth much.

I was listenting to M&M this morning and they said that every team contacted had ruled TO out definitively - except Titans, NO and OAK. When the NO coach heeard this, he called into some radio show voluntarily to say NO WAY in hell does he play in NOLA. :shocking:

If Terrell goes to Denver, well, Lifetime fan. Grew up there. But between McDaniel's stunt with Cutler and this, may be time to part ways.

I will agree with you that the media loves to take TO's nonsense and run with it. Once a 'personality' has established himself as a bad teammate/unstable/locker room cancer, everything he does becomes magnified 100 times. But let's not pretend that everything was fabricated by ESPN last year./ I saw a lot of footage of Owens screaming at teammates, screaming at coaches, and moping last season. And that's not taking into consideration all of his antics in practices and in teh locker room that cameras don't have access to.

There are only two reasons a team would cut a player......1., because the player can no longer help the team win games (or at least not enough to demand the price he's getting paid), or 2., because he has a negative impact, psychologically, with the team.

I have a feeling it's simply a combination of the two. He's definitely slipped , talent wise, but he's still a top 25 WR in this league. Unfortunately, when you consider what a devisive teammate he is, and how much he creates a media circus and the distraction that it brings, being top 25 just isn't good enough. It was when he was a top 3 WR.

I do not disagree with you but this team has been going down hill since their 12- 1 start in 2007. I believe they are 10-10 since then including their 2007 playoff loss. Look no farther than their 44-6 loss (it was 44-3 after 3 quarters) to Philly in week 17 for a reason to shake up this team. Face it, they were going no where with TO. If nothing else this should send a message to the team that no one is untouchable. I thought that last year Dallas played like a bunch of guys that thought they couldn't lose their jobs.

Owens to Denver would be the most shockingh move I have witnessed in all my years as a football fan.

The Broncos are sitting on a young version of Owens already. Brandon Marshall has the size, strength, and speed to be the league's best receiver, but he's a freakin' head case. They are desperately fighting to get this guy on the right path so that he can be a huge weapon in this league for years to come. To bring in the poster child of physically gifted receivers who's antics prevented his teams from ever winning the big one, would be catastrophic, IMO. They'd be MUCH better off bringing in Torry Holt. Maybe Holt can use his last year or two in the league to teach Marshall how to be a professional. What is Owens going to show him?

Agreed. I can't see Bowlen allowing this to happen. - Especially after the recent McDaniels/Cutler fiasco. That was keystone cops material and Bowlen is one of the most respected owners in the league.

On the bright side, Brandon and Owens would make a SOLID duo. - They managed 25 drops between them last year. Two of the league's BEST - pass droppers. :first:

I'd have to think D is looking for WR's in the draft and elsewhere. They got rid of Javon Walker - just flat out dropped him. You'd think BMarsh might have learned a little something from that. But guys like him don't seem to learn.

Per RotoWorld

Beat writer David White cites a Raiders team source who insists "there is no way T.O. is coming here."

The Raiders have a new free agent policy: building with youth, re-signing their own, and looking for cheap patches on the market. "It's like a complete 180 from last year," the source said. The team is desperate for an influx of talent at wide receiver, but they're obviously determined to go with youth.

I think this new philosophy will change. I have a hard time believing that Al Davis would pass on a chance to bring a media-###### like TO into camp. Davis is surpassed only by Jerry Jones as the ultimate friend of asswhole players. Any attention is good attention to Al Davis. He'd love to see ESPN lead with a story of Owens screaming at his OC or talking sh!t about J. Russell. No such thing as bad publicity to Davis.

I have a hypothetical question. If your team signed T.O. to a three year contract, where only one million dollars was guaranteed, he could be cut at time if he "acted up", but if he met certain on the field incentives for good play the total contract could be worth 30 million. Would that change your mind? Would you then be okay with it knowing if it went south your team can be off the hook for cheap?

I don't know about that. Some say the same thing about Jones, but BOTH of these guys have taken great lengths when they thought that they were getting a bad image. Davis went ballistic when he thought Kiffin was selling him out by leaking to the press. Jones did the same thing. These are proud guys. While yes, I think they love attention, I think when their organization starts to look stupid (granted it's a low bar for Davis) and poorly run, that kind of press they try to stifle hard.

Not saying TO wouldn't end up in OAK, just addressing that one line.

Terrific assessment of the situation. :overhead:

I have a hypothetical question. If your team signed T.O. to a three year contract, where only one million dollars was guaranteed, he could be cut at time if he "acted up", but if he met certain on the field incentives for good play the total contract could be worth 30 million. Would that change your mind? Would you then be okay with it knowing if it went south your team can be off the hook for cheap?

It's a decent question. But think about it. Every coach and owner has probably had "the talk" with Owens. "If you mess up again just one time..."

With Owens, the problem is, it's not like Pacman - everybody bittches and moans after a loss. Do you fire him for THAT? No. So the next time, it's a litle more, then it's something different, but still minor, then another, then another...

I understand your premise, but Owens it's not like he's breaking team rules. Not like he's breaking the law. Something gets "leaked" and he denies it. "Well fock, it could have been one of 60 guys. I can't fire an asset like him for a focking rumor."

Slippery slope man. I usually hate that experession, but it fits with him. No one thing is a fireable offense. But the hits just keep comin with him.

No. To me, this is the absolute worst situation. You think TO whines a lot now about not getting the ball enough...what do you think will happen when every dollar depends on it??? The d-bag had a game this year where he was targets 16 times and got 2 freakin handoffs then had the audacity to say he needs to be more involved in the gameplan afterward and he was already making like 7 mil a year then. If I'm a GM, I pay him like a 35 year old locker-room cancer WR and make him sign a contract saying that he's not allowed to talk to the media and if he does without authorization he'll be fined.

ps. He might be the next guy on Joe's vs Jocks... LOL

I guarantee that within 36 months, T.O. will appear on Dancing With the Stars. Mark it down. He'll probably throw his professional dance partner under the bus too.

Im late to the argument here and havent read most of the thread but I'll throw my 2 cents in on TO. This is good but there are few things that have to be brought up. It's no so much a matter of Romo and Witten drawing up plays and TO being upset. TO had/has no proof of that. He made an assumption based on those two being friends and spending extensive time together. And in the process of calling them out for something he couldn't prove he essentially threw his QB and his all pro TE under the bus. And then escallated it more when he goaded Crayton, Roy Williams and others into backing him up on it, creating more dicension in the locker room. Then he took it farther by also challenging the play calling of Jason Garrett, the offensive coordinator. Even if his opinion of Garrett's play calling is right, calling out the man who is essentially your boss on national tv isn't. The ends there don't justify the means. Add to it his incessant whining about not getting the ball enough despite being far and away the most targeted WR on his team only puts more pressure on Garrett but also Romo to appease him. Add it up and you end up with a player who goes out of his way to fracture relationships and create chasms in team unity.

He's a good player but a bad teammate because his attitude and selfishness is such a distraction that eventually it impedes the team in general. This situation, in my opinion, is different than what transpired in San Fran or Philly because TO also seems to have suffered a reduction in the skills that made his talent worth the headache. 4 years ago in Philly and 2 years prior to that in San Fran he still had some of the prime of his career ahead of him...now at 35 he's looking in the rearview mirror at it.

On the bright side, Brandon and Owens would make a SOLID duo. - They managed 25 drops between them last year. Two of the league's BEST - pass droppers. :wall:

Coming soon to a field near you!

Bad Boys III: You can't cover them, they can't catch! All hell will break loose.

I have a hard time believing that Al Davis would pass on a chance to bring a media-whore like TO into camp.

I have to admit, as a Raiders fan, this scares me. While I agree with wiffle that not all kinds of press are good press to Davis, I could see him going for this one. In his mind, he will tell himself that Owens is more of a competitor than Randy Moss so it will turn out better. Plus, if Davis was dumb enough to trade a 1st round pick and then some for Moss and then give him a new contract as though he had been a free agent, he's got to like the fact that Owens is available as a free agent and doesn't need to be traded for.

What really scares me about it is that the Raiders are horrible negotiators. I mean, how do you give Tommy Kelly and Javon Walker the kind of money you did when no one else was going to pay them anywhere near that? The Raiders could well end up paying Owens $6M+ per year, with much of it guaranteed, and think they got themselves a steal. Even though no one else is likely to pay him more than $4M per year (assuming 3+ years on the deal and normal guarantees).

Just as TO had no proof of Romo and Witten drawing up plays, we have no proof of what TO actually said or that he "goaded" other players into doing anything. All we have are "sources" according to Ed Werder. And even if TO did believe that and say it, then so what. Its not throwing them under the bus, its the delusional thoughts of a prima donna WR. Of which, there are many throughout the NFL. If it didnt really happen then Romo and Witten simply state that it didnt and move on. And as far as his criticism of Garrett, Romo made pretty much the exact same comments about the offense needing to make adjustments. Where was the headlines on that?

Obviously, Ive never been on a pro team but I played varsity football and and have coached a number of high school and AAU basketball teams including many D1 players and a few pros. Point being, I have a lil bit of experience with locker rooms and team chemistry. Almost every single team that Ive been involved with had someone who complained about not getting the ball enough, had players who didnt like each other, etc. Its only when you're not winning that these issues come to a boil. But IMO, it was never the reason why these teams lost. If it was, then thats something that coaches and team leaders address immediately and head on, not passively.

I do agree that TO's age and declining skills are an issue. But a lot of his reduced production last year was due to Romo's injury. He still scored double digit TDs and he was still their best WR. My main point though is that I dont think cutting TO automatically makes them better. IMO it makes them worse. I really dont see how it helps the locker room that much either. I dont buy the argument Ive heard regurgitated on ESPN the last 2 days that now all of a sudden Romo or some other guys will "assume their natural leadership roles." Real leaders step up in times of adversity not when all of the "problems" have been cleared away.

What would help Dallas' locker room is winning. And I think that trading TO for Roy Williams (who can be a bit flaky in his own right) as the #1WR means less winning in Dallas. Of course, I could be wrong and TO could be the "cancer" that was holding the Boys back from glory but it didnt exactly work out that way in SF or Philly. The guy is an outstanding talent at WR, a headcase, and an easy scapegoat when things go wrong for teams lacking in leadership.
