IGotWorms 4,063 Posted January 17, 2013 Another thing that doesn't add up: he says this girl was the love of his life, but when she's supposedly in the hospital dying from leukemia he never once goes to visit her? I don't care if their relationship really was online only, if you think this person is the love of your life you make some attempt to be at their bedside when they're dying of a terminal disease. Oh BTW, CNN did a whole story about the dead girl sending out a Tweet, apparently not realizing at all that you can easily fake being someone else on Twitter. Oh, the irony! Vikings4ever 568 Posted January 18, 2013 http://sports.yahoo.com/news/manti-teo-girlfriends-death-apparently-083848685--ncaaf.html Not once but twice after he supposedly discovered his online girlfriend of three years never even existed, Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te'o perpetuated the heartbreaking story about her death. An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 11. He and the university said Wednesday that he learned on Dec. 6 that it was all a hoax, that not only wasn't she dead, she wasn't real.
IGotWorms 4,063 Posted January 18, 2013 The questions at this point are 1) was he in on it all along, or did he just keep going with it after he learned it was a hoax and 2) if the latter, what was his motive for going with it (did he like the press, or was he too ashamed to admit he had been punked?). When you're 22, it's OK to be young and stupid. But being stupid is supposed to consist of much more fun than this.

The Moz 71 Posted January 18, 2013 http://sports.yahoo.com/news/manti-teo-girlfriends-death-apparently-083848685--ncaaf.html He supposedly found out late December what is he supposed to do come out then and take away from the National Title game Jan. 7th? that was like 2 weeks after he "found out". I would of done the same thing rather than take away the spotlight from my team. What I think happened is that his Grandmother died -- then whoever was his make believe internet GF - felt bad and coped to faking it all. Manti was embarrassed and made up something about her dying -- then it grew into this huge thing and to make it work he had to keep lying making it worse. He then decided to just wait till the season was over to come clean to some effect.

He should have just not talked about her. Easy enough. Sorry I don't wish to discuss that. The fact that he was the one that continued the lie with the media makes me wonder about his overall involvement. If I was duped, I sure wouldn't keep bring it up and lie about it. Even if he wasn't in on it from the start (which hasn't been confimed), he definitely should not have perpetuated her existence and the whole story about her death once he learned it was false. And it seems he kept the story going mainly for fame and not necessarily out of embarassment.

If it was in response to a question about "her" then I can't fault him -- If he brought it up on his own in an interview than yes it is his fault and he did have something to do with all this. IGotWorms 4,063 Posted January 18, 2013 say Manti isn't lying now -- you are saying he should have announced it 2 weeks before the title game and taken away from his teammates and team/school as a whole? IF Manti isn't lying now, he still shouldn't have used it to his advantage. I think he should have come clean, yes, but at the very least he should've downplayed the whole thing rather than using it for fame.
Recliner Pilot 61 Posted January 18, 2013 say Manti isn't lying now -- you are saying he should have announced it 2 weeks before the title game and taken away from his teammates and team/school as a whole? Answer to any question: "My team and I are about to play the biggest game of our lives. Right now I am focusing 100% on football" Or continue to lie thru your teeth. TD Ryan2 316 Posted January 18, 2013 I'm not really following this story but can't escape hearing about it. Not sure it's such a big deal. Some kid made up a girlfriend and all kids of tall tales about her... and it just so happens that he was no a larger than normal stage with it all. did he do it b/c he's gay? did he do it b/c he's mormon (or a virgin)? did he do it b/c it's pretty common for young men to make up stories about girls? not sure and not sure I really care why. The kid lied. Hopefully he learns from it. And maybe he needs some phsychological help. It's become such a media sh!t storm because the MEDIA is angry/embarrassed by the fact that they were duped. The key part your missing is that she was allegedly in a bad car accident and then later allegedly died from leukemia. Lots of people felt bad for Manti and for her non-existent family. He received a great deal of fame as a result. Surely you can see how shameless and despicable that is, no? Hell, I've heard of this happening enough now that when I hear a tragic story I usually wonder if it's true. That definitely makes me less likely to donate my time, money, or even sympathies. I'm certainly not the only one that has that reaction either. Isn't that sad, that we can't even hear of a personal tragedy without auromatically questioning whether it isn't some scam or publicit stunt?
IGotWorms 4,063 Posted January 18, 2013 Case in point: last year I was living in a small city where a young lady working at a coffee booth was abducted and murdered by a serial killer. It tooks months and months for the truth to emerge about what happened. In the meanwhile there were funds established to help find her. Many many people, including myself, wondered if maybe the girl had faked her abduction as some kind of scam and if her father was perhaps in on it. She and her dad maybe had some kind of shady past and they certainly weren't rich. Her father, who had just lost his daughter to a serial killer, also had to suffer from a sizeable part of the community wondering if he was a liar and a fraud! How fockin awful is that? And it's largely due to people who pull the kind of sh!t like Manti seemingly pulled here.

Lots of people felt bad for Manti and for her non-existent family. He received a great deal of fame as a result. Surely you can see how shameless and despicable that is, no? sure - I get it. Is it really any worse than the guy from work who's grandmother is always dying? Or the people that pretended their kid was stuck in a weather balloon? He made up a lie and was probably trying to get out of it... when a car accident didn't do it, he had to actually make up a story to kill her off. Maybe? And Maybe it was all for the extra publicity boost he'd get and maybe he got an unwanted publicity boost from it? Who knows. Dumb kid made up a dumb lie and got WAY in over his head with it. He didn't fake cancer to raise money. He did't need any emergency responders or tax payer funded assistance. So the kid's a little screwy - in the head and the media bought it. cbfalcon 827 Posted January 19, 2013 The Psycho speaks Maybe I am just in a place right now personally where I am an easy mark, but in reading his comments, I believe Te'o wasn't in on it at any point. Granted, he drops out of the 1st round on my board simply because the opposing offense could probably tip him off that the next play is designed to be run in the stands, and Te'o would take off on a dead sprint for the popcorn guy. But I don't think he was in on the hoax.
