Manti Te'o's girlfriend death hoax

Recommended Posts

There's no chance HE (Manti) had any part in this -- A. he is too much of a high character guy to do that and B. there is no reason for him to do it.

This

His own father is quoted as saying Teo and her would meet up together when both were in Hawaii. He's been lying about something apparently.

"High character" doesn't mean much if he's really that stupid and clueless either.........if you believe his story.

If you haven't read the full story you kind of have to take the time to do it, it might be the sports story of the year really. Too much to go into everything, but phone calls where he would fall asleep talking to her and wake up with his phone showing an 8hr call."Her relatives told him that at her lowest points, as she fought to emerge from a coma, her breathing rate would increase at the sound of his voice," Remember this is a nonexistent person. A con-man of the highest order it appears.

I'm really glad I don't know this guy.

What if he had won the Heisman?

This is such a strange story. In this ESPN article, Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick insists that Manti Te'o "never met Kekua in person." However, if Deadspin's coverage is correct, then this directly contradicts what Brian Te'o (i.e. Te'o's father) had previously said, as he stated that Kekua and Te'o would sometimes meet in Hawaii although Brian Te'o also claims that the family never met Kekua. [That seems a bit peculiar in and of itself: that Kekua would allegedly meet up with Te'o when he was at home from school with his family in Hawaii but that she'd never actually met his family while she was there -- but who knows?] Brian Te'o also claimed at one point that he'd spoken on the phone with Kekua, which takes this to whole new level of confusion and/or deception.

It's also strange that Te'o claimed that he met Kekua after the ND-Stanford game a few years ago; but now he's claiming that he never met her in person, according to Swarbrick. If he never met her, why did he say that he had met her? If he did meet her, then how come he never noticed that the pics that everyone was posting of her was not actually the person that he'd met but, instead, some random other woman?

And now, to top it all off, ESPN is reporting that Kekua is actually a real person living in Samoa and that other NFL players have met and interacted with her in-person. Like I said, it's all a bit murky at this point. Definitely one of the crazier stories that I've ever heard from the sports world.

I wonder if Buzz Bissinger would apologize to Deadspin now. He ripped Will Leitch and all of Deadspin two years ago for tarnishing sports journalism. Now they've broken a story that fooled 'prestigious' organizations like Sports Illustrated.

How many days until we get to see the Lennay Kukua sex tape? :pointstosky:

Here come the " he's ghay" rumors lol

That is interesting. What if that GF was a "He"? Perhaps he is a good guy, and he just wanted to cover up his sexual preference in the world of football? I read that he is a really good guy off the field. "He's a ghay" rumor is the only answer when you give him benefit of doubt. lol

Here's my problem with that theory: why the stories about a car accident and especially her dying from leukemia? That seems completely unnecessary to cover up a homosexual relationship.

The likely truth is It was just an online relationship -- he said he met her to make it seem real. He's Mormon at a Catholic school. Is he Ghey - who knows (I doubt it).

At the time this happened he wasn't even thought of as a heisman hopeful - there's nothing to be gained by doing this for Te'o and everything to lose if he gets caught -- for him to of been involved. He was a first round lock and would have been a first rounder last year.

That said if I am a NFL team that wants him I do my homework on this case because the only reason he would have is he is a sociopath liar with no conscience. Everything I have seen on him is that he's always been a great teammate and a good guy who never gets into trouble.

If you're read the Deadspin original on it, it's pretty damning ( for lack of a better word ). The whole thing goes to back to when they met in California, which he also said. He might be Mormon, but if after three years I've never met her and never gotten any nookie, no way is the word "girlfriend" getting tossed around. Now ESPN is reporting this:

In September, the grandmother of Te'o died, and it was widely reported that his girlfriend died hours later. Media outlets pounced on the story as Notre Dame began their march to the title game. After Deadspin.com broke the hoax story, however, multiple media reports have said that players thought that Te'o had only met Lennay Kekua once and that it wasn't really accurate to call her his girlfriend. But as condolences poured in, Te'o "played along," according to the teammate, who wished to remain anonymous.

So the guy went with the publicity angle generated by the death of his imaginary girlfriend? Yeah, that's the kind of high-character guy I want on my team. There's also word that the "dead girlfriend" issued a postmortem tweet? WTF?! So here's my guess, Te'o has the ghey and is/was in a relationship with the Tuiasosopo guy and this was a HUGE coverup because he's a football player and a Mormon.

Dude, he's on record as saying he was on the phone with her for hours, his father talking about they would hang out in Hawaii, etc. You're really naive. Whether he's a sociopath or just got caught up in some nonsense with some others influencing him remains to be seen, but the full truth will be out there soon enough. Regardless, the 1 scenario that is impossible is the one you're trying to paint, which is he got hoaxed. It's ridiculous. He's on tape saying they met at stanford, blahblah. Even his teammates are turning on him...

Who else was involved in the Kekua persona? Even after Kekua’s alleged death, Te’o reportedly kept in touch with her family. ESPN columnist Gene Wojciechowski was putting together a video for SportsCenter in October to chronicle Te’o’s rise to fame and the emotions he went through during the season. On Wednesday, Wojciechowski explained the tension and pushback he encountered when he pressed Te’o for more details about his girlfriend, including photos:

“I remember trying to find an obituary for his girlfriend and could not. And couldn’t find any record of this car accident. But we asked Manti, could we contact Lennay’s family and he said the family would prefer not to be contacted. Could we have some photos of Lennay? He said the family would prefer not to provide those. And so in that instance, and at that moment, you simply think that you have to respect those wishes. But in retrospect, you can see where some of those things simply were not adding up to make sense.”

Te’o told a reporter from Sports Illustrated (which, like TIME.com, is owned by Time Warner) in October that the two would fall asleep on the phone together and that “in the morning his phone would show an eight-hour call,” with Kekua breathing on the end of the line. Te’o cited her relatives and specifically named her supposed brother and sister in the same article: “Te’o got a call from his girlfriend’s older brother, Koa, who sobbed, ‘She’s gone.’ ” If Kekua was a hoax, who played the parts of her family?

Mormon kid.

Catholic college.

Locker room full of naked men.

Internet girlfriend that no one ever met.

Yeah...this is just the tip of the iceberg.

When he finally comes clean and admits he is ghey, do we call him Man Tied Te'o?

Not once but twice after he supposedly discovered his online girlfriend of three years never even existed, Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te'o perpetuated the heartbreaking story about her death.

An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 11. He and the university said Wednesday that he learned on Dec. 6 that it was all a hoax, that not only wasn't she dead, she wasn't real.

The truth is coming out on ESPN right now.

Some guy name Ronaiah Tuiasosopo pulled the exact same hoax on another guy 4 years ago using the same girlfriend name and the same pictures. The person won't speak, but his cousins are telling the story. Ronaiah told some woman who ESPN is talking to on the phone right now, who told her that he did play the hoax on Mantai. He and freind(s) used twitter, myspace, and the phone and his friend impersonated a girls voice. They said it started as a game and they then got serious about it. They would look online for their next victim.

Mantai Teo appears to be the victim of a terrible hoax.

If true the only lies are about meeting her, which he probably concocted out of embarrassment.

I kind of feel sorry for Manti.

Ronaiah disgracing his family's name.

He probably also lied about the phone conversation stuff, as well -- at least some of it. Originally, he was telling ESPN that he'd talk to this girl for 8 hours at a time; but it seems hard to believe that a dude would impersonate a woman's voice for 8 hours. But I don't know.

The weird thing now is why Manti & ND continued to play up the dead-girlfriend stuff for weeks after they knew it was a hoax. After all, he was answering questions about it right up to the BCS Championship Game in early January -- even though he knew it was a hoax by early December and ND knew it was a hoax by late December. Not sure if they were just milking the free publicity or if they were too weirded out to tell reporters the truth. At the very least, after discovering the truth, ND should've informed reporters that Manti (and any other players) would no longer be taking personal questions in lead-up to the game. Just very poorly handled by ND in that regard.

:dunno:

I wouldn't call him a "victim" exactly. He continued to perpetuate the story after he learned of its falsity. Now if he did that out of sheer humiliation, I could feel sorry for him. But it seems like he was strongly motivated by fame too, which makes him somewhat culpable IMO.

Apparently there was girl involved, cousin of Tuiasisopo or something. Details are sketchy right now, but someone who knew someone who knew someone who knew Tuiasisopo said a girl was in on it.

He knew dec. 26th -- the Heisman had already been handed out. He told the school as soon as he learned about it. If this is anyone's fault it's the school itself -- show me a link when he says anythign about fake girl friend without being directly asked about it? -- He was just keeping up the story like he was likely TOLD to do.

They were going to come out with it anyway AFTER the Title game.
