Official Bill Belichick hasn't signed a decent free agent in his tenure

Recommended Posts

He's signed plenty of good free agents. He's also had some major duds (mostly at WR and CB), but the Pats don't pay big money so his duds never fock the team over.

I'm not too impressed about the Welker for Amendola switch, but let's not get ridiculous.

He has signed some decent free agents, just no blockbusters and certainly no WR's that could play in their system.

All in all, BB has cost the Patriots at least 2 more Super Bowl appearances and maybe 2 SB wins with his ineptitude as a GM.

Correct.

He is becoming the Theo of football. People drink the Kool-Aid of his "genius".

He hasn't won a Superbowl in a decade...partly because of bad drafts and poor FA signings.

Bunch of idiots up in here. Pats are in or near the Superbowl just about every year, but Belichick is somehow "inept"?

Pats have missed out on a few opportunities to get over the top though. In '06 they had porous WRs after losing Branch and Givens, and that likely did cost them a title. Then after losing Samuel they flailed around trying to find a decent CB for years--part of the problem was BB wanted a shortcut like a cheap veteran or mid-round draft pick.

Other issues were the lack of a decent pass rush from about 2009 to 2011. Again Belichick tried to find the answer without having to invest heavily.

So yeah, he's made a few mistakes, but they're still among the top teams every focking year. And that's while working within the constraints of a salary cap system. To say Belichick is "inept" is focking dumb.

The Pats are near the top every year because of Brady.

Some of his free agents/trades have been excellent (Vrabel, Welker, Harrison, Dillon, Moss, etc) but lately they have been downright stupid and scream of desperation as he does what a 12 year old would do when they see a famous name available and bring them in (85, Haynesworth, Winslow, etc). He has had a ton of draft picks not pan out.

He a good coach and has a good eye for talent but no genius as he once was thought of....he walked into a great hall of fame QB for nothing, just like Holmgren did. And will always have a dark cloud of his admitted cheating over his head. Not many coaches if any have that on their genius resume.

And when the heck has that division offered any decent competition? Any above average team would be at the top every year when they are almost guaranteed a one week bye from that division.

You yourself just admitted his moves likely cost them a title.

He's a helluva coach and a for the most part a sh1t GM.

No one is saying they aren't on the doorstep to the Super Bowl every year. That's not because of his GM prowess, it's because of his coaching and Brady. His GM abilities are why they haven't won since Feb 2005

I disagree. Yes he cost them that 2006 title by not getting some decent WRs. But costing yourself a title doesn't mean you're a bad GM. Most GMs would kill to get themselves into a position where it is even possible to cost yourself a title with one mistake.

Belichick is a great coach and Brady is a first ballot HOFer for sure, but you still need to have the horses to contend for titles year in and year out.

They haven't had the horses for titles lately, but they can walk through the AFC East with a bunch of shetland ponies, so they give themselves a chance at a title every year at the least.

They beat plenty of quality out of division opponents. Your bias is revealing

I'm no more biased against them as you apparently are for them. They had 3 "quality" wins against the Broncos, Colts, and Texans. They went 1-3 against the NFC West, including a home loss to Arizona. 6-4 outside division, 6-0 in a division where no on else was above .500. Come on.

BTW...the Patriots (and Kraft surprisingly) are coming off like biatches in this whole Welker back and forth.

I bet Pats fans want a replacement, the Lions guy who had the sense to draft Calvin Johnson is available. May want to give him a call.

Wrong.

I would like to see someone added as a GM that I know has some say in what's going on off the field.

Kraft is being skewered by the media. Sounding bitter and potentially turning off Tom Terrific.

Trade with Oakland.

Nice try, tho.

If we wanted to split some hairs....(from wikiedia)

On February 28, 2008, Moss became a free agent after the Patriots decided not to place the franchise tag on Moss. Although the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers were rumored to have interest in Moss, he decided to return to the Patriots, signing a three-year, $27 million deal on March 3, 2008. The contract included a $12 million dollar signing bonus, and a total of $14.1 million guaranteed.

Before the 2007 training camp, Moss was traded to the Pats via Chokeland for a 4th round pick. That 2008 contract was after he put up monster numbers in 2007 for the Pats.

I know that, pussie.

But the fact remains that he was a free agent after the 2007 season, and the Patriots signed him. The OP didnt qualify that Belichick hadnt signed a FA away from another team.

Oh, so....its NOT just Brady then? You mean you need talent around these God-like quarterbacks to win SB titles? Hmmm....

As for Bill being a GM - his problem is simple: Its NEVER the players that win its all Bill's schemes. In his world, you can plug anyone with a pulse into the Pats lineup and everything stays the same. Except that, well, it doesnt. Just look at the data. Yeah, they've been competitive for a while and that does say something. However, the NFL is severely watered down right now and the talent is spread too thin so even mediocre teams seem like Super Powers. Couple that wuith a chicken-azz division that they get 6 automatic wins from a year and you see how it goes.

Once Bill's ego cools off and he realizes that the Super Bowl titles from years past were won by the great clutch players they had(and a solid kicker :) ) then things will get back to normal. Until then, they'll always be "there" but wont likely win another title or even get to one.

Vrabel and Harrison beg to differ.

Eta - Woodhead, Ninkovich, Pattern, Seau, Carter, Waters

Played high school football with him.

He actually wasn't that great in high school. Definitely a solid player but it wasn't like he was obviously destined for the NFL. We had a defensive lineman that would have been a good NFL player but he focked up his ankle really bad and then pretty much quit football.

There were others on our team that were probably better than him. He was the type of guy who never gave up though which has obviously payed off.

How does a guy who wasn't great in high school get onto two top teams in the NFL with the Saints and the Pats, and some guys spend their entire career bouncing from one horrible franchise to another?
