Spiller had 4 more carries than Fred... Fred was much more effective today when he had the ball..

 

Spiller was dancing behind the line too much, looked like he did his rookie season... The read option was not working, EJ didn't have a single run out of it so the D just got to Spiller early...

 

The play calling was pretty bad, they need to get him the ball in space and should improve that as we go on..

I watched every snap of the game. This quote right here sums up why FredEx had a better game than Spiller. The Pats were CLEARLY afraid of CJ Spiller. Every time he was on the field, they sold out against the run. Whenever CJ touched the ball there were 8-9 guys crashing the line immediately. He had nowhere to run. When Fred came out it was almost as if they were like "ok, the old man's out there, we can relax now." They weren't controlling the gaps as well, you didn't see the whole defense converging the same way, and as a result Fred had some ridiculous holes to run through. Fred might be old and beat up but he's still one of the better one-cut backs in the league and if you give him a hole he's going to roast you.

 

So here's the good news for you CJ owners - no need to panic.

 

#1 - The Bills don't play the Pats every week. This was a top 10 run defense last season and they look even better this year. The rest of the schedule is not so scary on the run defense side. That was probably the best run defense Buffalo will face until week 17 when they play New England again.

 

#2 - As EJ develops, teams will not be able to sell out against the run the way the defense did today. He looked good today but he also looked like a rookie who hasn't played since the 2nd week of the preseason and has only been back to practice since Wednesday. There were some opportunities to burn New England deep when they were selling out against CJ that Manuel missed and some he didn't. As he builds up a better rapport with his recievers he'll hit more of those passes and force defenses to back off. His TD strike to Stevie Johnson showed he's capable of elite accuracy and touch and once he gets more consistent with his throws - which I don't think will take long as he has literally looked better and better every game he's played - teams will pay dearly if they stack 8 in the box just to stop CJ.

 

In other words, relax. It was one game and the stars just seemed alligned against CJ in this one. It was a rough week for MOST top tier RBs with the exception of AP Almighty. I had Doug Martin and he didn't do much better for me than CJ did for you. I'm not worried and you shouldn't be either.

He didn't look starstruck or overwhelmed. He was calm, he appeared in control, he didn't force anything, he took what was given to him, and he finished with a QB rating over 100 and nearly stunned the 10-point favorites and their Hall of Fame QB. What more can you ask of a rookie quarterback making his NFL debut. Oh and one comparrison since they're ridiculously similar:

 

Russell Wilson NFL Debut - 18-34, 153yds, 1TD, 1INT. 8 carries for 20 yards.

EJ Manuel NFL Debut - 18-27, 150yds, 2TDs, 0INT. 3 carries for 23 yards.

If his career follows a similar trajectory as Russell Wilson's I think Bills fans will be pretty happy. And he will start making teams pay if they keep selling out to stop CJ Spiller.

I understand your comparison. And yes, the outcomes of their stats were similar. But that is where the comparison stops. EJ and Wilson are not even close to the same type of quarterback when they hike the ball.......One game is quite a small sample size to be a known thing.

 

Wilson is shorter, more creative and can stretch a pocket far more effectively than Manuel. Manuel is bigger, not as mobile but has a big arm and can make plays. He does not have the "smarts" that Wilson does.

 

Jury is still out on E.J. but I wish him the best.
