posty 2,844 Posted April 10, 2014 http://www.deadline.com/2014/04/stephen-colbert-new-late-show-host-replacing-david-letterman/ BREAKING: Stephen Colbert has inked a five-year deal to take over CBS Late Show With David Letterman, a move that is effective as soon as Letterman officially steps aside from the late-night show he has headlined since its launch on CBS in 1993. Letterman announced his retirement a week ago. Colbert is host of Comedy Centrals The Colbert Report and was one of the main names that swirled after Letterman made it late show with david letterman logoofficial he was stepping down sometime in 2015. Colbert was said to be well-liked by CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves, and his contract at Comedy Central was coming up in mid-2015. Now he has a new deal CBS said today in a announcement by Moonves and CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler. Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television, said Moonves today. David Lettermans legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and todays announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night. CBS said in its announcement that specific creative elements well as the producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted Late Show will be determined and announced at a later date. That language is sure to pique interest from politicians in both New York, where Lettermans show currently lives at the Ed Sullivan Theatre, and in LA, where Mayor Eric Garcetti and film czar Ken Ziffren called Moonves directly Tuesday asking the CBS chief to move the late-night franchise to the West Coast. That came one day after NY Mayor Bill de Blasio urged Moonves to keep Late Show in New York after Letterman steps down.
phillybear 366 Posted April 10, 2014 That was fast. With so many boring white guys fighting over the same viewers, they may have gone in another direction with Chelsea Handler.
IGotWorms 4,063 Posted April 10, 2014 I think he'll do a great job. But these shows don't seem so relevant anymore thanks to all the expanding cable/satellite and especially Internet choices
Mungwater 601 Posted April 10, 2014 I think he'll do fine, wonder how he'll play it, as his Colbert report character and as him as a standup. I tried to watch Fallon a couple of times, he made that show into a SNL lite, couldn't get into it
MDC 8,039 Posted April 10, 2014 This whole late night variety show / interview format is so dated.

But these shows don't seem so relevant anymore thanks to all the expanding cable/satellite and especially Internet choices I'd bet that Adult Swim is beating most of them in the ratings. Well, 18-49 demo anyway.

wiffleball 4,797 Posted April 10, 2014 as much as I hate the British, I like the format of Graham Norton. He doesn't have one guest at a time, they all come out together more or less. Makes for a much more engaging and entertaining format.
wiffleball 4,797 Posted April 10, 2014 will be interesting to watch.he is making fun of bill o'reilly is just about over. The question is can he move on from that?

gutterslut 1 Posted April 10, 2014 Never understood how this guy became famous. Low information voters sure seem to love him and that moron John Stewart though. Information isn't based on high nor low; it's based on correctness. Or the way it's perceived. All the information you get on FoxNews or even MSNBC in an entire year can be called high information. But it may not be correct information or just one side of an issue. You have to be able to discern whether it's correct or even one-sided only. Now as far as you. If you are unaware how Stephen Colbert became famous or think John Stewart is a moron - then you sir are a low information poster.
IGotWorms 4,063 Posted April 10, 2014 An uninformed or poorly informed voter. His show and Jon Stewart's show are essentially about politics and current events. People who watch them are, by definition, not "low information." You may think they aren't getting the RIGHT information (as found on Fox News), but they are certainly getting lots and lots of information

I was making a joke about the folks who use these shows as their source for ALL information.............You know what, just forget it. Do me a favor and put me on ignore. Voltaire 5,511 Posted April 11, 2014 You guys are both wrong. Low information voters are people who don't know there's been an airliner missing for a month because they don't watch the news. They may have figured out there's a black guy named Obama in the White House since ads telling them how great/horrible he is appeared during their favorite TV show but they don't know or care what his positions are on any issues or even what the issues are. Fortunately, usually these folks make up the 1/3 of the country that doesn't vote. It's only when they get dragged/tricked into going to the polls that they become low information voters. wiffleball 4,797 Posted April 11, 2014 remember when Fox News had their own comedy show? Had a f****** laugh lrack? tried and failed miserably. Fox opened itself up to satire. we found the Ark why can't we find the plane? Laugh out loud.
CantTouchThis 23 Posted April 11, 2014 Like Colbert, don't like the move. Him and Stewart are perfect on CC. I am pretty sure Stewart could get any late night gig he wanted, but he sticks to his show. Colbert should have done the same, IMO.

Colbert should have done the same, IMO. Colbert may want to be out of being in character all the time. That said, he's certainly handled it better than Paul Reubens did. He's great at satirizing Fox hosts but that must get old to him after all this time. He's go nothing more to prove with that he does have a lot to prove that he's capable of other things and this gives him a opportunity to do that and broaden his talent. Voltaire 5,511 Posted April 11, 2014 Another sign of getting old. I remember when Letterman was new. How he was passed over for Johnny Carson's spot (I though Carson was awesome and would be irreplaceable). Then again I remember Sparky plugging two rookies into his lineup batting 8th and 9th - Trammell and Whitaker- and still think of Antonin Scalia as a new Supreme Court justice. gutterslut 1 Posted April 11, 2014 This is the correct answer. His (Colbert) schtick was played out 5 years ago. Only the morons who thing they are getting real news from him (See Worms) will think he will succeed. Colbert's schtick is showing real live video of some of the stupid things FoxNews does and some of the ignorant things Republicans say and do. If you think that schtick was played out 5 years ago, you sir are a low information poster. Btw, the News is real. He doesn't make things up (speaking of FoxNews). You just don't like it. When he routinely goes on other people shows and schools them on the issues.just because you don't agree with a guy doesn't make him a moron. but calling somebody a moron because you do disagree with him makes you a moron. I have a feeling he will still be in character, I haven't even seen him out of character in the interviews he does. All that being said, I am not a huge fan(I like him though). The only late night dude I watch semi-regularly is Conan because he can do more on cable than the network guys and he is funnier. Fallon and Kimmel are alright. From what I have seen from Ferguson he is TERRIBLE. I just don't get his humor at all. I like some English humour, but that is a bit much.
wiffleball 4,797 Posted April 11, 2014 Ferguson used to be great. But he sees the handwriting on the wall. He even jokes openly on his show about phoning it in.
Voltaire 5,511 Posted April 11, 2014 I have a feeling he will still be in character, I haven't even seen him out of character in the interviews he does. “I won’t be doing the new show in character, so we’ll all get to find out how much of him was me,” Colbert said in a statement via CBS. “I’m looking forward to it.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2014/04/10/five-questions-about-stephen-colbert-replacing-david-letterman/
Mike Honcho 5,532 Posted April 11, 2014 "CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America," Limbaugh fumed. "No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, conservatism. Now it's just wide out in the open. What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny, and a redefinition of what is comedy. They're blowing up the 11:30 format... they hired a partisan, so-called comedian, to run a comedy show." Of course, Colbert will be retiring his faux-conservative character when he takes over from David Letterman. It must suck to be a conservative...
posty 2,844 Posted April 11, 2014 Craig furgeson just watched his bank account swell. I don't think CraigyFerg ever wanted the 11:30 slot... He might not get by with as much as he does at his current slot...

phillybear 366 Posted April 11, 2014 It must suck to be a conservative... Limbaugh is kind of dumb. Letterman is clearly a liberal and it would at times bleed into his show. How does Slobbo not understand this? It's not like Colbert is taking over the 700 Club. If anything, he should be ranting about the gay guy on Bravo, who seems to be drawing a bigger audience than Conan, Stewart, and Handler. He's just half-assing his arguments now. Sho Nuff 720 Posted April 11, 2014 I think Stewart is funny and fits perfectly for cc and his shtick works for him. I just don't think Colbert is funny. I think he is slightly funny in very small doses. But overall can't see him being big in late night. Should give a nice bump to Fallon and/or Kimmel.
