MTSkiBum 1,620 Posted April 24, 2015 You know when you see a sign that says lane ends and everyone gets into the correct lane except for a few as$holes who speed down the closed lane until right at the last second and jump ahead of everyone. Well I started swerving in front of them so that they have to wait in line like everyone else. Sometimes i worry about the person shooting me though.
NewbieJr 541 Posted April 24, 2015 Actually, things go much smoother and get backed up less if everyone holds their lane all the way up until the merge point. Unfortunately, people get jumpy and want to get over as soon as they see a sign saying "lane ends two miles". As a result, the people who actually drive correctly, look like ass holes. BunnysBastatrds 2,439 Posted April 24, 2015 I do that kind of stuff all the time. I did the same thing a few weeks ago. I was in the lane and I could see a car speeding up to get past me instead of behind me. I sped up to ensure couldn't and he was inches from hitting me and the wall. They were pure gansta. Screaming at me with the windows rolled up. Fawk em.
IGotWorms 4,058 Posted April 26, 2015 I do that kinda stuff sometimes. It is stipid though. Only takes one complete fockin loon to make you wish you'd just let it go

Gepetto 1,368 Posted April 26, 2015 I'll bypass the line of 30-50 cars every time. Friday leaving work (I park on the street); remote started my Jeep, jumped in and turned the blinker on to merge. This guy in a pickup didn't let me in. So I just inched forward and took the left turn in front of him. He slammed on his horn at the corner right by my work. We got up to the next block and stopped at a light. I stared at him in my rearview mirror for a straight 30 seconds to a minute. He looked away several times; I made him nervous. Be a nice person and let me in so I don't have to wait for several minutes for a line of cars when everyone is leaving work downtown. Don't ever fock with me on the road. I'll put you in the ditch if I have to. No one gets one over on me. Never.

BiPolarBear 485 Posted April 26, 2015 Respectfully, because I know you are a good guy: Are you absolutely sure that one of the drivers you blocked wasn't on the way to the hospital to say goodbye to their dying mom? Stay out of the way and live your own life. Yes. I have only ever done this twice, the drivers that feel entitled always drive BMW's, Mercedes, etc. There are just people out there that think they are better than the general population and that their time is more valuable. On the way to work there are a few long exit's on the highway, and cars will get in the exit lane, speed down the exit lane and then cut everyone else off at the very end. Or at the busy onramps on the frontage roads, I see drivers all the time instead of getting in line the onramp lane they will get in the lane next to the onramp lane and go right to the onramp and cut all the drivers off.
RLLD 4,230 Posted April 27, 2015 It's called a zipper merge. Google it. It's universally accepted by experts to be the correct way to merge, both from a traffic flow and safety standpoint. This. If people would just do it right, traffic for everyone would be less intense. Unfortunately the people attempting to merge and the people already in the lane are wildly stupid and incapable of following even the most simplistic actions, and what you will get is 10-15 mile backups.
NewbieJr 541 Posted April 27, 2015 This. If people would just do it right, traffic for everyone would be less intense. Unfortunately the people attempting to merge and the people already in the lane are wildly stupid and incapable of following even the most simplistic actions, and what you will get is 10-15 mile backups.Part of that is because every panics as soon as they see a sign that says lane closed ahead. It might be five miles away and they are fighting to get over. When in reality, it's the guy driving all the way up to where the lane is closed who is doing it correctly. And all the Nervous Nellie's are making the guy who's driving the right way look like he thinks he's entitled.

I have seen this behavior as well. I also know that a lot of people feel like you do about the drivers of those particular cars. I drove a C-class Mercedes 30 miles as a favor. I drove on the freeway as well as regular surface streets. NOBODY would give me a break if I needed to switch lanes. Know I know why I get a lot of waves when I let the beamer pull in front of me. RLLD 4,230 Posted May 20, 2024 I am rarely in a rush to go anywhere. I leave at a proper time, and there is no situation where I feel threatened by being late..... I put myself in that right most extra lane that closes down, and I drive rather slow....so alllll those people who think they deserve some extra advantage end up fighting their way over.... It's a pure d!ck move for which I derive perhaps too much enjoyment....

It is a d*ck move, not because those people want some advantage but because the zipper merge is the most efficient method of traffic management as described in the link I posted. You should worry about yourself and not the other drivers.

I drive it as if it is a zipper lane....what I do not do....and what most people actively do....is treat it as a "launch lane" to accelerate wildly so as to get in front of as many cars as possible...swerving over recklessly at the last minute instead of doing the zipper

You still have the bottleneck of all of the cars needing to merge down to a single lane. Often times there are lights or 4 way stops on the other side. It does make it so that there is room for more cars, but i was not describing that when I made this post. I remember this incident there were 5 of us waiting in line for a 4 way stop that was directly after the merge. There was plenty of room for him to slot in behind us.
