MDC 7,267 Posted May 10, 2015 LA Fitness is closing in Philadelphia and I need a gym with a location in my neighborhood. My new house is a 10-minute walk from PF so I figured why not? I'm not a big guy or a power lifter or anything. Facilities look pretty much identical to most mainstream chain guns I've been to but during the tour the woman at the counter kept stressing it's a "no judgment zone" so many times I finally told her I've been working out my entire life and gyms don't intimidate me. So pointed out the "lunk alarm" and I had to roll my eyes. Banging weights scares people now? Seems to me this place is the solution to a problem (intimidating gyms) that didn't really exist. I'm also told they have pizza night once per week and a bagel morning. Have yet to work out there, will update. Facilities look perfectly fine though.
Djgb13 2,339 Posted May 10, 2015 Never will catch me going there. It's a joke of a gym. Working out too hard? They make fun of you. Eat pizza while working out? No judgement. It's honestly where fat people go to "work out" while feeling good about themselves, eating fattening food, and making fun of the people who actually do workout. They ban certain types of exercise there too. I just don't like that place and would rather do body weight workouts at home than pay to go there
Reality 3,121 Posted May 10, 2015 Heaviest dumbbell at the one I took a tour of was 75 lbs. I was never going to join but, that sealed the deal.

NewbieJr 541 Posted May 10, 2015 I think that some out-of-shape people get intimidated by guys (or gals) who are really serious about it. And they think the serious lifter is looking down on them. So the average person may like the idea that they're working out around like-minded people. I can definitely see them feeling more comfortable at a Planet Fitness. I'm a serious lifter, but I'd fit in just fine at a Planet Fitness. never grunt and groan. Never slam my weights. At eh Gold's Gym that I lift at, I always am very nice to everyone. Even the 350 pound plus guys that are going about one mph on the treadmills. I think it's cool that they're in there making an effort. The Planet Fitness near me is only ten bucks a month. That's a great deal.

I'm sure the guy trying to get in shape is thrilled to hear that you think it's cool. Or maybe he doesn't want to die. So nice to hear you're also nice to everyone. Why would we think otherwise? NewbieJr 541 Posted May 11, 2015 Anyone that drops the dumbells is a lunk. In fairness, If you're doing flat dumbbell presses and the dumbbells go over 120 pounds each, it's nearly impossible to control them back down to the floor when you're done with your set. But then again, some people think that anyone capable of using 120 lb dumbbells is, in fact, a lunk

A place where the 'lunks' aren't. That's what this thread is about. In case your pee-sized brain missed that. Holy fock. YOU were a marine?? I fear for our nation's security. jerryskids 6,706 Posted May 11, 2015 My wife and I go to a place that does high-intensity interval training (HIIT); 1 hour class that busts your ass. Most people there are serious, but not the huge lunk type -- more like people who train for cross fit competitions, triathlons, martial arts (in our case), etc. Tomorrow they are having a gourmet waffle truck outside; it is for the two year anniversary of the current owners, but my wife joked with them "what, are you trying to compete with Planet Fitness pizza day?" Also whenever she sees a PF bumper/window sticker, she tries to drive past them to see what the driver looks like. Her non-scientific sample is 100% of the people have been fatties. My son belongs to a Gold's which just became an EOS Fitness; he came home from college Thursday and hasn't gone yet, but looking at their website they seem fine: http://www.eosfitness.com Also I agree with Newbie on the heavy dumbell press. When I go to my company gym I do a quick workout based loosely on Rippetoe principles which involves sets of 5 with heavy weights (for me, I'm not huge). It's pretty much impossible to not drop the weights. At the time I usually go there are only serious lifters there anyway, so nobody cares.

Sho Nuff 720 Posted May 11, 2015 Meh...its a gym, its cheap. u may have joined one instead of where i got but they had not moved i to this area. Now there are two decently close...but only a little cheaper than my pace and i like my gym. Good mix of hot chicks, old fockers, and some fatties without too many meatheads. And even yhe bigger meatheads are pretty cool to talk to.

MDC 7,267 Posted May 11, 2015 Didn't get there yesterday cause of Mother's Day but I will probably go after work this week if not next weekend - still carrying my other gym membership right now. tanatastic 2,062 Posted May 11, 2015 Out of shape people are absolutely nervous around in shape people. Its just natural if you feel like the odd person out. But ill also say that anyone who thinks that anyone else at the gym gives two rat focks about you is paranoid. No one cares and your not important. The buff guys arent snickering at the average sized guys, they are just listening ot music or doing whatever. In fact, youll find in any situation where there is no competition and other people are around that no one cares about you.

I think you need take a muscle relaxer and chill out. You seem tense and jealous lol. And FYI I am happy that people exercise. You will never catch me laughing at an obese person at the gym working out cause I always think "good for him. He's doing something about it". However, PF is the definition of judgmental. If someone is actually trying to workout hard they will call you a "lunk". Plus free pizza while you workout? Come on you know that's just retarded. Sure there's a few ###### out there but that's anyone. Back when I sometimes made it to a gym, the nicest guys were the buffest ones. They are the alphas of the place so why would they act like prickks? Dudes usually only act like that if they feel threatened, so when they are the big dogs in the yard it only makes sense for them to be relaxed and helpful. Again, they dont care, but this is the innate deep down instincts at work here.
