TheNewGirl 1,527 Posted November 13, 2015 Feel like I am coming down with something, like my body is fighting. Isn't there some type of alcoholic drink that people recommend when you don't feel well, like a bourbon or something? I know; don't drink alcohol, drink water, get rest, blah blah blah... tanatastic 2,062 Posted November 13, 2015 I want alcohol, not water. Well you cant have it. Youll have to wait til your better. Drink an emergen-c and take a zinc tablet with some water. Honestly tho the vitamin C is just placebo, it has zero affect on your cold regardless of what 99.999% of people say. Its a myth, does bupkis.

Cloaca du jour 2,152 Posted November 13, 2015 Whiskey, honey and lemon. My granny used to give me that alot. Zinc has been proven to help Zicam, coldeze all contain zinc. If there is any silvery metal pipe around...get a file...rub some off and snort it. In college i worked at a pipe mill. I was never sick those years.
jerryskids 6,892 Posted November 13, 2015 http://www.food.com/recipe/dr-pats-hot-toddy-cold-remedy-234344 That's what I was thinking - whiskey, honey, and lemon.
fandandy 3,313 Posted November 13, 2015 That's what I was thinking - whiskey, honey, and lemon. Supposedly it doesn't help. I just found this. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/18/health/18real.html Nonetheless, two large studies have found that although moderate drinking will not cure colds, it can help keep them at bay. One, by researchers at Carnegie Mellon in 1993, looked at 391 adults and found that resistance to colds increased with moderate drinking, except in smokers. Then, in 2002, researchers in Spain followed 4,300 healthy adults, examining their habits and susceptibility to colds. The study, in The American Journal of Epidemiology, found no relationship between the incidence of colds and consumption of beer, spirits, Vitamin C or zinc. But drinking 8 to 14 glasses of wine per week, particularly red wine, was linked to as much as a 60 percent reduction in the risk of developing a cold. The scientists suspected this had something to do with the antioxidant properties of wine.
shotsup 832 Posted November 13, 2015 When I was a lad my parents gave me Rock and Rye. Had fruit in it. I got better. I also vote for blackberry brandy. I always say "germs can't live in alcohol"

Then you die and your headstone reads "Death is just a placebo" Maybe. Its a known fact for people in the know (medical practitioners) that vitamin C is placebo when dealing with a cold. Also most things in the world are placebo or myth.

penultimatestraw 473 Posted November 14, 2015 Maybe. Its a known fact for people in the know (medical practitioners) that vitamin C is placebo when dealing with a cold. Also most things in the world are placebo or myth. There is some data that it reduces the incidence of colds among military recruits (read: young & fit, but highly stressed). For everybody else, you're actually right (for once).

penultimatestraw 473 Posted November 14, 2015 I want alcohol, not water. I wouldn't expect it to cure anything, but strong liquor can numb your throat if it is sore and knock you out.
Djgb13 2,339 Posted November 14, 2015 Is that your medical advice? No more of a personal preference. For a cold not much you can do because the time you're sick is relatively short. Hence why there isn't any serious research into producing a vaccine for it. Pharmaceutical companies wouldn't make any money off of it. So besides the standard cold and flu pack you can get at the store I personally like to have a nice dark beer when I get a cold

Like heaven Funny factoid: I've never been sick since I had mono at age thirteen. I became a heavy drinker and have yet to be sick since then. Nothing has made me sick. No flu or cold. NoSTD's. Nothing. I've ravaged my body with alcohol and the results are nice ones.

MedStudent 56 Posted November 14, 2015 liquor will dehydrate you. The reason you want to drink water or soups is that by hydrating you are thinning the mucous and allowing your sinuses to drain easier. Alcohol can have the opposite effect of dehydrating you and cause more congestion. So you will even be MORE miserable. I guess alcohol could help you get to sleep easier but I ultimately get worse sleep when I go to sleep that way. Why prolong your cold for alcohol? Get plenty of sleep and fluids and then a couple of days after your cold is done, get plastered!
