10 Greatest American Achievements

I completely agree. I didn't say they were perfect I meant they perfected the model.

But are they any worse than any one or anything else?

They have done a lot of evil things but you can not deny what they contributed.

Gotcha.

Did they invent the car, railroads ect? Rockefeller invented oil? All replaceable. Let's not make them out to be Jonas Salk. They were businessmen, nothing more, and the way they operated is illegal now. Rockefeller got rich once because of a monopoly, then got richer when they made him break it up. And I won't get into the cruel labor practices all of them used.

Laugh all you want, but it's all true. You can look it up. But I will say, that at least the robber barons left something behind. Today's robber barons and I'm talking about Wall Street and the banks, contribute almost nothing for all their wealth. At least we got cars and railroads out of the old timers. I'm sure you hold Teddy Roosevelt in high esteem. They called him the " Trust Buster"

Actually I do like Teddy. Corporations need to be checked. Our modern life and the advancements made because of these mere businessmen and their companies is incredible. Ford changed all of manufacturing and JDR is the father of modern oil production. To dismiss the technical contributions these corporations have and continue to make is nieve. They are not perfect but they are no more or less corrupt than our political leaders.

Maybe their methods were a sign of the times. I'll accept that. But sorry, there is no way in hell I am giving any credit to some hedge fund manager who only used capital to create his wealth. Not innovation or hard work. Not even luck. Just moving massive amounts of money in and out with the security of inside information assuring a profit an astounding( impossible if it's done legit) amount of the time. Damn those guys are good. And they contribute nothing to speak of.

Not only that, the robber barons built universities (vanderbilt) concert halls (carnegie). They built entire communities for their workers to live in (Dupont, Pullman, Ford). They left a better society.

Most of today's billionaires are parasites. Shuffling paper around taking money they produced nothing to earn. Speculating on this and passing the bag to the taxpayer when they fock up.

At least they still build housing for the workers though. In China, Bangladesh, Mexico, etc.

At least when the old guys broke some eggs we all got some of the omelette. They got most of it, but left behind enough. These focks on Wall Street only want more. We don't even know most of their names. Just the way they like it.

The Transcontinental Railroad

That is definitely a strong possibility for the top 10.

Maybe also - the Louisiana Purchase.

Railroads are a joke because we have planes and the interstate highway system. Railroads in Europe make a lot more sense, that's why they are so much better. Ours could be great and only a small amount of people woukd use them more than they already do.

MBTA (Boston/MA trains) had 400 million riders last year.

Please let us know where we can hitch a plane ride to work.

Like I said, if you made them so great, ridership woukd only increase a little bit. The ones that woukd use it already are, crappy as it is.

Hauling people is a very small part of what railroads do. We haul more freight tonnage by railroad than any other country but China.

That's not what we're talking about. We are talking about passenger railroads.

I don't know the top 10, but the internet and the power grid are 1-2 in my opinion. The power grid being first and the internet being a distant second.

You were talking about "railroads" and pronouncing them a "joke", while never acknowledging what they really do. That's dumb. HTH.

dude, the focking thing crawls, it's a joke. with no traffic to deal with, there is no reason it can't go twice as fast. if it went twice as fast, I assure you. WAY more people would use it

I am not asking for a bullet train, just stop going 10 over a bridge.

I hear ya, but the metro north in NY is packed every day as is. No incentive to improve. I'm sure it's the same in Boston.

While we are on the subject

March 7, 2016

In a series of unanimous votes the Fiscal and Management Control Board voted for fare changes effective July 1, 2016 1. While the overall system-wide average increase is approximately 9.3%, some of the changes will reduce fares and costs for certain services. These changes should result in approximately $43 million in new revenue in FY17.

Creation of Lock box: Dedicating all fare increase funds to improve service

The Board voted to put all increased fare revenue into a lock box to fund investment in capital improvements that will deliver short term improvements to the riding public. This dedicated fund will be under the control of the FMCB. A two-thirds vote of the FMCB is required to use any funds for a purpose other than the original intent. Lock box funds will total approximately $43M in FY17 and $25 million from FY16 operating budget savings.
