13.02 Helpless - Crosby Stills Nash & Young

CSNY is the band I was referring to a few posts back that had yet to be represented. Neil Young was here as a solo artist, but this is the first time they've shown up.

Most people probably think of them as a 60's band.

I've been sitting on another song of theirs. I almost took it with my first pick once I took over for Fandandy, but figured it would fall.

Me too. The last number one hit of the guy who started it all. I thought I could wait until the last round and grab Burning Love.

Some of you may not know about TCB. Elvis used to give necklaces to his inner circle that had TCB with a lightning bolt below it. Taking Care of Business in a Flash. I found the son of the jeweler that made them for him. He still had his fathers mold. I had him make me one, from the original mold. Since it was being special made for me I changed it up a bit and had him do it in white gold instead of yellow. I thought it give the lighting bolt a little more pop. I'm wearing it right now.

The way my day is going I'll probably get hit with a real lightning bolt. I'll ask God why and he'll say, "Just taking care of business. OK then, they are expecting you below."

I'm both shocked they just now showed up, and that I didn't think of them earlier.

IMO for an artist that wrote his own music, songs etc. I'll give Buddy Holly the nod on that one.

Buddy Holly got started in 1956. Elvis made his first record in 1954.

Not taking anything away from Elvis but he wrote very few songs,Buddy did it all and IMO had he lived would've been huge.

I love them but the songs I would personally pick are from the 60s.

Also I never got the Neil Young inclusion in the band. Three guys with beautiful harmonic voices and you add a guy that makes Springsteen sound like Pavrotti? I appreciate Young's solo work and contribution to music, but singing with those 3? Meh...

I was never much of a fan. I cant really put my finger on why.

The harmonizing is the best there is, the lyrics are good and they are icons of folk rock. I should love them, but I just dont.

The one song I like most is actually Southern Cross, which was released in 1982.

I agree Holly was awesome and would of had an amazing career. But if Elvis hadn't of influenced him to go into music, Holly may of ended up a teacher or something. No Elvis. No Holly. No Beatles and on and on.

Elvis took R&B, Gospel and Country and merged them into a new sound. He opened the doors for black singers to be accepted by white teenagers. I could go on about how the civil rights movement could be traced back to Elvis. He changed not just music, but the world. That wasn't his intent. Really he wanted to be a gospel singer. He had auditioned for a gospel group, but Sun Records signed him before they got back to him. They wanted him but he was already committed to Sun.

Ever hear his 60's stuff? Playing Children of the Sun and this one back to back is like watching that clip from Spinal Tap.

Elvis was probably the all around entertainer, but there were far better musicians, songwriters, guitarists and vocalists than him in the early days.

He had a good voice, and the looks and moves to soak a billion panties.

I won't get into a p!ssing match but c'mon Holly was already in music in the very early 50's.I won't discount that Elvis had an impact on him and wanting a career of it but he was not Buddy's influence on picking up a guitar.

It was more than that. With all the alt takes with studio chatter that have been released, the experts mostly agree Elvis was the producer of his music. Now that they can listen to the first takes to the final product the say he was an interpretive genus. He sang with passion. That's what Sam Phillips of Sun was looking for. A white guy that could sing with the passion of the black artists. Phillips was the only one out there recording R&B. People like Muddy Waters. But it just wouldn't sell. He found his guy with Elvis. One piece of studio chatter pretty much says it all. After a few takes Elvis says, "OK, Let's get mad at it. That's why he reached so many people. You could feel the passion that he felt.

I don't see it as a p!ssing match. Just two guys sharing their views. Those early sun records that most people don't know is where it all started. This is a debate that has been going on for decades. Nothing new here. I'm just sharing my view on it as you are sharing yours. I felt it's been a good give and take.

I didn't know that. Interesting. There's an alt take of Jailhouse Rock that they say was the first Punk Rock song. When I heard it I was, damned they're right.

If I came on too strong, I'm sorry. I get a little passionate with this type of discussion. I didn't mean to demean your view in any way. I learned some things from it.

I couldn't function in this draft if I restricted myself to fresh artists each round. I can barely get by now,

I think it's part of the fun but then again I have an extensive music library of around 80,000 songs
