A prog rocker's dream

 

Liquid Tension Experiment was formed by former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. Portnoy first invited keyboardist Jordan Rudess and progressive rock icon Tony Levin (bass, Chapman Stick) of King Crimson and Peter Gabriel's band to join him. In his instructional video "Liquid Drum Theater", Portnoy said that his first choice for the guitar was Dimebag Darrell, but he was unable to join because of conflicting schedules. Two other primary choices, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple) and Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) were also unavailable. Portnoy then turned to fellow Dream Theater member John Petrucci to fill the position (despite initially wanting to keep the project completely separate from Dream Theater). The combo was formed as a side project to Dream Theater in 1997. Both Mike and John confirmed on the 5 Years in a Livetime DVD commentary, that Rudess was asked to join Dream Theater largely because of the success of Liquid Tension Experiment, and the chemistry of the three working together. Rudess had previously declined to join Dream Theater in 1994 and instead became a member of the Dixie Dregs, known for complex, "Southern fusion" instrumental music.

I am obligated to take this as I spent more time listening to this album than any other in the 90's (Interestingly my Second was a Joe Jackson Album)

 

I couldn't decide which song to take, so I just went with one that had the opportunity to get a traditional PUNK Oi, Oi, Oi, in it as well as an awesome Trumpet solo

 

If you follow the video, you can see the Inspiration of Edward Norton in American History X(2:14), there is something so awesome about a hardcore punk riding a scooter

Its all good, I grew up listening to em in punk clubs in TJ, Pennywise a half a dozen times at high school parties and such

Anybody ever heard of this band? I love them, but rarely meet anyone who knows them.

I think you run in circles of people who probably don't know a lot about music. In most "alternative" music publications one of their albums are always ranked as a top 10 to 20 albums of the decade.

 

Pretty sure rolling stone had them in the top 100 albums of the decade also...

Me and a friend were in a bar. These chicks were all hammered and excited that they got tickets to see some band called belle and Sebastian.

 

Had never heard of them, but pretended I had. Listened later, and loved them.

 

Yeah, they get some critical love.
