Djgb13 2,338 Posted March 20, 2018 Do you want humanity to die? Because that what overprescribing antibiotics does. PA I work with prescribes them to everyone for the tiniest sniffle. And if he doesnt they get upset and complain to the owner (the doctor) and then tells him to just prescribe them anyway

Hardcore troubadour 12,653 Posted March 20, 2018 I read they have come up with a new strain of antibiotics and everything is going to be fine. Thanks Big Pharma! It's like when they came up with the great pain relievers (heroin in a pill) and then also came up with a laxative for the opiod induced constipation( too late for Elvis) and Narcan for when you OD. If they were dressed shabbily I'd let them nod out and hopefully kick it in a chair in the ER. If they were a normal looking college kid or someone like that I'd give them the Narcan. Kanil 519 Posted March 20, 2018 How are they abused and what makes antibiotics taboo for OTC sale? I don't think it's abuse so much as it is overuse and not finishing the recommended amount. Both lead to antibiotic resistance. No Bueno.

Djgb13 2,338 Posted March 20, 2018 Tan: You dont prescribe antibiotics unless you have a bacterial infection. Such as a UTI or strep. Prescribing it for anything else overuses them and reduces their effectiveness. This leads to antibiotic resistant strains. Think of the flu. Every year theres a new flu vaccine. The reason? The flu virus mutates and adapts to the previous vaccines. Its just a simple change in its gene sequence that can effectively make the vaccine not effective. Antibiotic resistant bacteria can/will become resistant
Vikings4ever 496 Posted March 20, 2018 Are you ok? You responded to my question with a question and then a vague response to my response. Can I get someone who understands how to have a normal back and forth conversation over an Internet forum? Like Kanil said, people not finishing a prescribed course of antibiotics is a huge problem, as it can lead to more antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. One of the reasons large scale use of antibiotics in agriculture is controversial. Allowing easier access to antibiotics for people will lead to more misuse, and a proliferation of those resistant strains.

Djgb13 2,338 Posted March 20, 2018 I see, that makes sense. There actually was a big push on overprescribing antibiotics a while back so its weird you didnt hear about it. But for my bachelors I took pathology, bacteriology, and virology where I learned about a lot of that. Was pretty interesting

Djgb13 2,338 Posted March 20, 2018 Nice work Digby. Fockin Pen would have turned it into a lecture. Sorry thats not my style. One of the best ways to interact with a patient is give them the info in ways they can understand. No need to draw out the info into a big lecture. No one wants that. Most times patients want to get in and get out. Not wait around for a while and then have the provider go into a lecture about the different things they came in for
