Bernie has some rabid grassroots supporters. If the DNC worked with him, instead of against him, they could grow that support substantially. I don't know if it would be enough to beat an incumbent with a booming economy such as we have but it could make things interesting.

It's a tough position for the DNC to be in.  Bernie isn't even a Democrat. And he's much farther left than the party wants to be. Trump calls him a socialist and they are 100% correct. Add to that the fact that as soon as Bernie would be beaten, he'd do what he did in 2016 and act bitter and pouty and not encourage his supporters to go with whoever the nominee ends up being.   It's very tough for the party to put themselves behind someone who couldn't care less about the party and is basically a free agent looking out solely for himself.
