Nowhere is the coronavirus roaring back more fiercely than Michigan. There are an alarming number of cases in the state, nearly as many now as there were during the worst of the pandemic. 

Michigan has the highest new cases per capita in the nation, 72% greater than the next highest state. Michigan's positivity rate is nearly three times more than the national average. Nearly two dozen hospitals in the state are at least 90% full.

"The situation in Michigan is pretty concerning. It's as bad as it was over the holidays. The variants are definitely one of the drivers of it," said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University School of Public Health. 

There is growing concern about what that could mean for the rest of the U.S. 

State officials are begging the Biden administration for help. "We're really encouraging them to think about surging vaccines into the state of Michigan," said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. 

But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said more shots may not be the solution. "When you have an acute situation, extraordinary number of cases, like we have in Michigan, the answer is not necessarily to give vaccine. The answer is to go back to where we were last spring, last summer, and to shut things down," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said Monday. 

On Monday, Whitmer extended workplace restrictions to allow people to work remotely, if possible, as she urges a two-week pause on indoor dining, in-person learning for high schools and youth sports. But those restrictions are voluntary. High school basketball championships were held over the weekend. 

High school-age kids in the state are far more likely to be infected than any other age group, with more than one in four testing positive, including 15-year-old Niamh O'Connell. 

"When I first got it, I was pretty upset about it. My case was super mild," O'Connell said. "School is very important to me but it stresses me out sometimes. So the ability to come play sports, and gives my body a chance to relax and just have fun with my friends and to have that break and then go back to my studies." 

Student-athletes in the state are being tested every week. 

"It puts a burden on us, especially going from school and like then to sports, then back home again. And you're like wow, this is life now," Jacob Roman, a high school senior, said. 

The variants that are overtaking Michigan are now spreading across all 50 states, with the B.1.1.7 or the variant first discovered in the U.K., becoming the dominant one. A new study confirms the variant is 35% more transmissible, but researchers say it is not more severe or deadly than the original strain. 

"What's happening in Michigan today can be happening in other states or other parts of the country tomorrow," Whitmer warned.

Not where I live. Granted my mom didn't agree to be vaccinated until about a week ago but since then everywhere I've looked is out.  All the Walmarts near here have no vaccine and the local Meijer did text her once with availability but by the time she responded they were also out.

I'm shocked how poorly this sh!t is set up, honestly.  There should be one nationwide portal where a person signs up with their SS# and types in their zip code and it gives you a date, time, and place to be.  They should have had Amazon handle this.  You can't even placehold at Walmart, focking giant ass Walmart.  All it does is a little pop up says:

We're out of vaccine at this store

We're working hard to get more in-stock. In the meanwhile, please try another store in your area or check back later.

Seems like an extra step and adds complexity. I think it was handled just fine. Other than Governments being too restrictive early on and wasting doses. Walmart has a great supply chain distrubution model so it's not that.

I don't know what happened but everything was running smoothly until Biden and Harris said they were going to "fix things"

You can't even sign up at Walmart so no it is partially that.  What, they expect 72-year-olds to sit on their computer and hit f5?  DUMB.  They should at the very least have set up a system where you can sign up and get a callback.  Meijers did a much better job in that respect.

Trust me a one government database would not work and that's coming from a government employee.

I know Michigan was strict on covid but in what way?  Took long to let bars and resturaunts to open? What else? Asking got my own information as I didnt really follow what states did what except for knowing which ones were more strict.

Yes restaurants, bars, schools etc... Delayed some surgeries. I posted earlier in the covid thread my 20-year-old neighbor almost died because she couldn't get the heart surgery she needed. Whitmer went so far to ban people from buying seeds. She didn't want people on lakes and put restrictions on how far people could travel. 

There's a ton more, but I can't remember them all.

Jesus remember the seeds?  Craziest damn thing I have ever ever seen.   The entire outdoor patio sections of stores were roped off.  You weren't allowed to buy things for OUTDOORS.  And the seeds.  Could not buy seeds.

Now....I generally am not a political conspiracy kinda guy.  However Whitmer is so pathetic politically it just stands out. 

IF Trump were still President, she absolutely would be shutting things down.  They are becoming worse than they were back in the fall when it all got locked down again.  But she doesn't want to make the current administration look bad.  It's so transparent it's absurd.  Not to mention this idiotic pleading with the government for help. If it was Trump, she would be on every TV channel, every newspaper, every radio station crucifying Trump for his failures.

Yet she constantly rambles on about bi-partisanship.   Governor Whitmer is one of the dirtiest politicians I have run across.
