Only 6% of U.S. retail businesses are black owned

Recommended Posts

According to the commercial I just saw, that NEEDS to change.

Why can’t we just encourage folks of all colors to open their own biz instead?

Depending on the type of retail biz you choose, it’s not really that hard.

And the barriers to entry aren’t as numerous or difficult to overcome as other types of start-ups.

We are the land of the free, not quotas.  No system is perfect.  But in trying to destroy freedoms to create quotas, you open the door to tyranny.

Considering their population density that sounds about right.

What am I missing here.

There is no quota on opening a business

Depending on the category, brick and mortar retail can be a tough way to make a living.  But it can be done by anyone willing to work hard and live frugally early on.

Skin color is no factor whatsoever.  Literally none.

I think what you meant is demographics, not density.

And according to the demographics, it should be 13%, not 6%

The bigger concern is the disproportionate amount of crime they commit.

Why should it be anything?

Retail shops aren’t distributed to U.S. citizens based on demographics.

They’re opened by people who have ideas and/or a desire to be their own boss.

Fairness

So should I give one of my retail stores to a black person in the interest of fairness?

No.  More black people should be encouraged and given opportunities to open their own.  Has nothing to do with you, scared white person.

Adults do not make up that whole 13% number. Why would you include children and old people in your numbers?

So no it shouldn't be 13%.

Why do they need to be encouraged? How are they not given opportunities to open their own?

Why? 13% of a population shouldn't necessarily own 13% of businesses. Running your own business is a lot of work. Most people can't and/or don't want to do it.  :dunno:

Lack of resources, lack of education, lack of role models, lack of ambition.  Do you really not know this?

So if given the opportunity, they will undoubtably be successful. Where can I invest? Or is this a tax payer thing? Because we all know that that guy doesn’t count anymore. Just print it.

How about this?

ANY person of ANY color is welcome to make me a buy out offer at any time.

Including you.

You could sell booster seats, cat saddles and step stools.

I agree, but if everything was a level playing field, the data would play out that way.

I'm white and I don't want to own a business

Lots of people lack resources.

There is no education requirement to open a business, as opposed to being a lawyer or doctor.

Most of the NBA is black.  What more do  they need for role models?

Lack of ambition has nothing to do with color.

Next excuse?

Well, you are right about the lack of ambition for many.  But I would say that about anyone who lived off the dole. Nice job, racist.

I would never be so presumptuous as to suggest what someone else's motivation to do or not do something are.  Additionally, there is no requirement that the percentage of people doing a certain thing exactly match the demographics of our great nation.  Everyone is free to pursue their own interests.  I don't call white people lazy because the NBA isn't 65% white. Do you?

There is no requirement.

I assume the ad is encouraging more black owned businesses.  How could anyone be against that?  What's wrong with having more black owned businesses?

That’s my point. This industry is extremely fair.  Minorities and immigrants open retail shops all the time

And opportunities abound for anyone with the balls to enter the space right now.

Skin color is not a factor here.

And you still haven't answered my question.  I guess, like the people you love arguing with, you don't really want to discuss this issue.  Because people who do realize it's a give and take to have a discussion, and I've addressed every point you've brought up.  I ask one simple question and you refuse to answer it.  I guess we're done.

They know first hand about all the looting. They don't want anything to do with being on the business owner side. :nono:

But the % of black owned retail shops  doesn’t NEED to change IMO. This type of language is unnecessary and divisive.

It could change.  It might change, but I can’t see any reason that it NEEDS to.
