New Bourdain documentary uses deepfake

The new documentary about Anthony Bourdain’s life, “Roadrunner,” is one hour and 58 minutes long — much of which is filled with footage of the star throughout the decades of his career as a celebrity chef, journalist and television personality.

But on the film’s opening weekend, 45 seconds of it is drawing much of the public’s attention.

The focus is on a few sentences of what an unknowing audience member would believe to be recorded audio of Bourdain, who died by suicide in 2018. In reality, the voice is generated by artificial intelligence: Bourdain’s own words, turned into speech by a software company who had been given several hours of audio that could teach a machine how to mimic his tone, cadence and inflection.

One of the machine-generated quotes is from an email Bourdain wrote to a friend, David Choe.

“You are successful, and I am successful,” Bourdain’s voice says, “and I’m wondering: Are you happy?”

The film’s director, Morgan Neville, explained the technique in an interview with The New Yorker’s Helen Rosner, who asked how the filmmakers could possibly have obtained a recording of Bourdain reading an email he sent to a friend. Neville said the technology is so convincing that audience members likely won’t recognize which of the other quotes are artificial, adding, “We can have a documentary-ethics panel about it later.”

The time for such a panel appears to be now. Social media has erupted with opinions on the issue — some find it creepy and distasteful, others are unbothered.

And documentary experts who frequently consider ethical questions in nonfiction films are sharply divided. Some filmmakers and academics see the use of the audio without disclosing it to the audience as a violation of trust and as a slippery slope when it comes to the use of so-called deepfake videos, which include digitally manipulated material that appears to be authentic footage.

Doesn’t seem kosher to me

Interesting that you would be the one to start this thread.  Your wife (ex?) tells me she used to use deepfake with you too.

I'd be good if they provided a little blurb stating that it was simulated from one of his emails.

I've been aware that this is going on and it looks like the day is finally here. This technology is likely to be incredibly abused in the future, as nefarious people can make any person appear to say anything that they want that person to say.  People can be framed for crime or politicians made to look like they uttered statements they never said.

I don't think films going forward should do this, let alone anyone else, but I don't mind this film doing it. First, it is legal under present law. And second, since theirs is the first film to do so, props to them for taking ownership, up front, of the false words and for presenting the technology and demonstrating it because it needs to be seen to be understood if a conversation is to be had on the topic.

Eventually, the technology will become so good that it will leave no detectable fingerprint that it is fake. That will be a horrible development and scary prospect for the future. Ethicists and lawmakers need to take a hard look at this.

Instead of the usual nonsensical bull crap that Hollywood raises a ruckus over and rings their hands and cries and moans. I hope you got Hollywood gets together and cracks down on this s*** hard and fast. Nothing compromises the integrity of filmmaking of actors, of the entire industry worse than this. To do so especially with a dude who's dead? Oh f*** you and die.

There's no stopping it. That's how technology works.

As with any new technology we need to carefully and thoughtfully consider the implications of how it can eventually be utilized by the pornography industry. With great power kvms great responsibility.

Imagine something similar to Cameo, where you can pay a celebrity to make a short personalized video.  With this technology you can have anyone in the world make a personalized talk dirty video.

Useful tool for control.  You can have any person in history say whatever you want.  Blackmail also works.

It really creeps me out that even when you use Google voice Google keeps all those little snippets of your voice and all the words you use.

I can understand your thoughts on this but I also can't put myself in the shoes of a person with severe depression. I've known a few people with really bad depression.  One of the girls killed herself. She was a coworker of mine.

A couple others I know or knew struggled constantly with it. They at times had felt that in their hearts killing themselves would be good for those around them.

I can't empathize with them, but man, I sympathize.

You worry more about dead actors than you do living Americans getting their business trashed by roving mobs.  You suck.  Go away.

Thousands of people shot in Chicago this year and him and mdc whine that I bring it up too much. They talk more about the capital selfie-fest than all the looting, killing, fire bombing, destruction of businesses etc. over one dead criminal who's supposed killer is rotting in jail now. Yet in Chicago, NYC, Seattle, Portland, LA etc. people are dying all over the focking place daily.

It's mind-blowing how utterly stupid and brainwashed liberals can be.

Even Sharpton thinks you are a racist idiot.

Al Sharpton: ‘Look the other way’ activists focus on cops, ignore ‘100 people shot’ in Chicago

“Civil rights leaders, some of us are meeting with President Biden this week,” Mr. Sharpton said, media watchdog NewsBusters reported. “We not only want to talk about voting rights, and we do, and police reform But how we have to factor in, in dealing with gun violence in this country. You can’t love our people when they’re shot by police, and then look the other way when we’re shooting each other. We have to deal with both.”
