Global warming cannot be stopped, per UN

Hypocrisy at its finest, the democrats are asking OPEC+ to increase oil production.

I think their plan is to use unicorn farts for power.

And in continuing news, still no word from worms about those scientists who claim global warming ( if it exists) can be reversed or arrested.

Unicorns could fly out of my butth0le too. I can’t disprove that possibility

The difference for me anyway is that the position of that paper is entirely consistent with the behavior of the IPCC, whose entire existence (and funding) relies on a single predetermined conclusion.  If you want to discuss unicorns, my challenge to you is to go through that 3500 page report and find a single finding that is not cataclysmic.  Heck, I'd even accept neutral at this point.  There is just no way that the data 100% points in one direction.  Then again I actually do science, vs. subscribe to the "party of science" belief that questioning things are heresy.

Well of course it’s cataclysmic. Global warming is not going to be pretty. There’s just no way that it is.

It’s like complaining that a description of the Apocalypse isn’t sufficiently rosy

Sure there is.  When the report came out recently, @MTSkiBum asked before I could:  why is the change inherently bad?  Funny, he's an engineer as well, two technical people asking a question.  That seems to fly in the face of "just no way".

If the earth gets warmer things will change.  If it gets cooler things will change as well. But when every change --  drought, storms, droughty storms, stormy droughts -- is blamed on climate change, one wonders how this earth ever held onto this magical small sliver of climate behavior for the previous billions of years to allow life to evolve at all.  :dunno:

And yet.....you start a thread with a title that claims it can't be.  One would figure that someone would have made a claim that it could be. :dunno:

I think the Unicorn thing is the greater possibility.

Just like global cooling wasn't pretty in the late 70's. That nearly destroyed us.

The ONLY thing we concretely know about climate change is that there is a multi billion dollar industry founded and dedicated to preserving it's existence.

Seriously?  Nobody is lining their pockets from whatever may or may not be described as contributing to CG?  Or from some sort of possible "mitigation"?  You really believe that.

There is money on both sides was my point. Energy is big business.

You cannot use the money argument for either side.

Here's the Dirty Little Secret that every fourth graders can figure out. See, as the Earth warms, more and more gases are released from our oceans and elsewhere which forms a bigger and thicker layer of protection between the Sun and the Earth. And then suddenly everybody's going to start screaming about global cooling.

Turns out, our little third rock is pretty self-sufficient. It's been doing this for like a billion years.

Besides, if you haven't been following the news, the Chinese are up to about a thousand nuclear weapons. All of which will be hyper Sonic by the end of this decade.

I'm much more worried about that. And it's actually something we can control.

I think they should host a summit and invite 400 rich people to all fly in their private jets and they can discuss how to fix it.

It is human arrogance that assumes we can control climate, or that our influence is as dramatic as stated.  Still, we could do better.

There are a lot of analogies between this and Covid, built around the Machiavellian belief that there is one message and any ancillary ideas, no matter how helpful, must be shot down.

In the case of climate change the message is that we are hopelessly doomed but we can hope for a diving catch if we move to “pre fire-age” sources (sun, wind, water, basically Avatar powers).  In reality the best alternatives for infrastructure power are nuclear and natural gas, and there is little activity in arresting or reversing.

For Covid it is vaccines at the expense of therapeutics and prophylactics.

IMO, there really is no real climate fight because both sides fully benefit from the argument as to whether it exists.  Getting past that argument would force everyone to examine the benefit of real change for the sake of a potentially better future earth.  Not for the sake of a past one.  For this to happen, climate change proponents are going to have to give up the existence fight.  Do you think that will happen?

No, not at all.  I only touched on the similarities; as @Big Guy just stated, control of the populace is a big factor in both.  Relatedly, both have a lot of cult similarities.

Speaking of cult-like beliefs, I've been meaning to tell this story:  Halloween night we set up the candy stand outside and in doing so met a few of our new neighbors (recall that we recently moved).  One across from us has a sign in their yard "climate action NOW" and the folks next to them "Choose Love".  Ends up the climate action people seemed pretty normal.  Mrs. Choose Love however... she is in her 60s and mentioned to the group that their son's wife was having a baby.

Mrs. Climate Action Now:  Oh, I thought they weren't going to have kids.

Mrs. Choose Love:  [with an odd, sheepish look on their face]:  I know, he is 32 and they said they weren't going to, you know, because of climate change [shrugs shoulders] I dunno, hopefully the earth will still be OK..."

All of us, even the people who've known them for years:

She seemed honestly disappointed/scared that their children were bringing children into the world.  How does one get to this state if no for a cult-like following?  :dunno:

Disappointing. I agree that these people should not be breeding.
