I think they are in the overrated category.

 

But a large HEB is tough to be for selection and freshness. It is one of the nicest grocery stores in the country. For example,I visit denver quite a bit and for how hipster the town supposedly is, the grocery stores are awful and not near as friendly to people who like to cook as HEB. Kings super, krogers, albertsons are all put to shame by HEB.

What’s HEB ?

LIDL has great deals on meats and seafood (frozen). 1lb for $5.99. 8oz salmon filets for $3.99 each. Knockoff Nutella $3 less then the real stuff and kids don’t know the difference- stuff like that. They are not allowed to sell wine here in NY but the beer prices aren’t anything special.

I just got organic grass fed Wagyu ground beef for 4.99 a lb at grocery outlet, and boy was it delicious

I went to albertsons after and they had the same one for 10.99 a lb

only reason I went to Grocery Outlet is cause its locally owned and I wanted to support them, but I swear I save 40% on groceries from shopping there now, especially meats and dairy, its crazy how much cheaper it is

It’s a Texas supermarket chain. They’re essentially a Texas Walmart except it’s actually nicer. Got homemade Mexican foods there too. Open 24/7. I miss that place

HEB is not a "cheap" grocery store, their prices are average. However the very large selection and freshness are second to none.

 

There is an HEB near our house that is just groceries, however it is as big inside as a super walmart. You want to buy an obscure indian spice, they have it, you want to get fresh oyster mushrooms, they have it, etc, etc.

 

By far the nicest grocery store chain in the country and I say that as someone who has lived/worked/traveled all around the country. I am not a texas fanboy either, the local fast food place everyone loves, whataburger, sucks.

 

Edit: HEB's in bumfock texas where @Pimpadeaux live are not like ours in houston, they are more "normal" grocery stores.

edit 2: while i was trolling @Djgb13 with the whataburger statement, they really do suck and only people that ate whataburgers in their teenage years/early 20's like them.

HEB is “cheap”. Hence, why majority of Mexicans shop there. Shopped there for years. That’s not saying it isn’t nice but the prices ARE cheapest around there. Central market on the other hand is not. It’s all pricey and fancy

HEB is very oriented towards their market. If you visit a super HEB in a rich suburbs that has a 50% asian population you get high end items and a very large selection of exotic food, fresh seafood, etc.

If you go to an HEB in a small town in the hill country you get a different selection of items tailored to that specific area/pricepoint.

 

If you are visiting an HEB filled with cheap mexicans............

We take a family reunion every other year to myrtle beach and there is a piggly wiggly close to where we stay. I am unsure if it is because it is in myrtle beach or because all piggly wiggly's are that way, but i assume they are one of the worst grocery stores in the country.

The one that i have shopped at numerous times is small, has a poor selection, and looks old/dirty on the inside. I am wary to judge stores in tourist towns though as that may not be representative of them as a whole.

I am disagreeing with you, they are not cheap. Their prices are on par with kroger/albertsons/other national chains, what sets them apart is their selection/freshness.

 

They have a huge selection of items that ranges from some of the most expensive down to lower priced

I am a Texas native living in Texas, and I have never heard of it. 

I looked them up, and they are selling off their properties in Texas. I don't think they were here long.
