Sweden approved to join NATO

NATO gets stronger.

“The agreement was reached in the final hours before a NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius on Tuesday, paving the way for NATO to expand across more than a thousand miles of territory straddling the Baltic Sea, shifting the balance of power in Northern Europe and creating a potential chokepoint for Russian warships and aircraft in the region. It allows NATO to enter its annual summit having ironed out major differences, projecting unity in the face of Russian aggression.”

sweden has an army of 40,000 which is about the size of the ukrainian army ADVANTAGE near Bakhmut.  sweden isnt doing anything.

A german military equipment manufacturer is set to build a factory in western Ukraine to repair tanks, armored vehicles, probably an ammo dump and also act probably as a weapons factory.  This tells us several likely truths.

1. some "coalition of the willing" will form a sub group inside of NATO to promise a security guarantee to Ukraine should Russia push further into Ukraine such that if they approach of attack the factory, several nations will send in troops.   basically calling the nuke bluff.

2.  these nations are confident it will be a deterrent to the point where they will spend money and resources on this project which will cost $200mm and be up in 12 weeks.  on the other hand, if it gets demolished, im sure the USA will reimbue the $200mm investment which is a drop in the bucket to the billions weve been pouring in Ukraine.

Rheinmetall will build and repair tanks in Ukraine, says CEO

By Frederik Pleitgen and Anna Cooban, CNN

Updated 11:55 AM EDT, Mon July 10, 2023

Berlin/LondonCNN —

Rheinmetall will open an armored vehicle plant in Ukraine within the next 12 weeks, shrugging off concerns other Western defense companies reportedly have about building a presence in the country while it is at war with Russia.

Germany’s biggest arms maker will also train Ukrainians to maintain the tanks and other armored vehicles made in the factory, which will be located in the western part of the country, CEO Armin Papperger told CNN in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

“[Ukrainians] have to help themselves — if they always have to wait [for] Europeans or Americans [to] help them over the next 10 or 20 years… that is not possible,” he said.

The company told the Rheinische Post newspaper earlier this year that it hoped to open a €200 million ($218 million) battle tank factory on Ukrainian soil, capable of producing about 400 tanks a year.

Papperger said on Thursday that factory workers would build and repair Rheinmetall’s Fuchs armored personnel carrier — named after the German word for fox — under license in the facility.

Rheinmetall (RNMBF) will operate the plant in partnership with Ukroboronprom, a Ukrainian state-owned defense group, which will also own the facility. In May, the companies announced an agreement to boost Ukraine’s “defense technology capacities.”

Chalk another one up for the good team. Let’s finish Russia’s sad ass army off, add Ukraine and keep the momentum up.

Cover story. They are building drones. They might still be doing work to repair and build armor, but the critical issue for Ukraine right now is a more robust array of practical drones.

Low flying drones are more effective in SEAD runs. Also there will likely be a shift away from direct fire packages and use more conventional ordinance.

Right now Ukraine is having a hard time killing Russian pilots. There are simply not enough MANPADS to create effective coverage zones to remove Russia's combined arms movement. If you can't do that, you can't challenge defense in depth.

However airfields are static. Fuel depots near those airfields have to be static. Crew quarters, engineering bays, all logistics can't be placed too far away. Like in all warfare, you want to killed the most skilled operations within your enemy ranks. The guys who are the hardest to train and replace.

If you use a low level drone to shower Russian rear echelon support units with top popper mines, then you've caused all kinds of havoc within their logistical framework.

Cost to damage ratio. Tanks are great. But they require a very heavy logistical chain to support them. The open fields that are death zones for Russian armor can work in the opposite direction. It's a huge cost for what might be functionally just a type of passive mobile artillery without most of the benefits of actual artillery units.

Drones however offer a high kill to cost factor. But the exponential returns will be in maiming as many Russian skilled disciplines as possible.

Air support - the lack thereof - is a major deal for both sides on this thing. Ukraine desperately needs it for an effective offensive. Ultimately, the West is all in on this thing. This is a decisive battle between ideologies, and my money is on the West. I don't see how Russia prevails in this thing. My hope is that the war ends, Ukraine gives up pro-Russia turf that Russia has captured and that Ukraine joins NATO and then all become well in the world.

Ukraine is in very very very bad shape. The international daily media cycle has tried to tamper down on that, but it's impossible to conceal much longer. .

Zelensky missed his practical window. When Prigozhin was marching on Moscow, he should have used his sleeper cells to release chemical weapons packages all throughout the city. The "march" would have provided operational media optics cover for it in the international daily media cycle.

If the US and NATO eventually demand that Zelensky concede to a "peace treaty", that would mean losing the valuable natural resources to the south near the Black Sea. In order for Russia to mine those out, they'd resort to slave labor and ethnic cleansing ( more Ukrainian blood spilled)

Zelensky should just empty his entire chemical arsenal on Russian soil. Putin will have to openly declare war, which will justify Zelensky using fundamental asymmetrical warfare tactics in country. Sniper teams, suicide bombers, IEDs, going after food production and the water supply, etc, etc.

If this is a perpetual war that will never end, then play it that way. Once Putin has to openly declare war to save face, NATO will have it's hand forced. They'll end up assassinating Zelensky for it, but the pathway will be set and NATO will have to intervene formally for Ukraine.

Going Great for Vlad!

“Russia's economic woes are worsening, with the latest blow coming in the form of a collapse in its current account.

The nation posted a current-account surplus of $5.4 billion for the April-June quarter, which marks a 93% plunge from a record $76.7 billion in the same period of 2022, Russia's central bank data show. That's also the smallest excess since the third quarter of 2020.

It shows the heavy blow that Western economic sanctions – imposed on Moscow in response to its war on Ukraine – have dealt to the country's economy, by squeezing its energy exports.

The worsening trade dynamics are also reflected in the plunging fortunes of the ruble. The Russian currency tumbled to a 15-month low of around 94.48 per dollar earlier in July, hit hard by the country's weakening terms of trade.”

Defense stocks have widely soared in that time: Shares of Raytheon Technologies are up nearly 8%, General Dynamics 12%, Huntington Ingalls Industries 14%, Lockheed Martin 18% and Northrop Grumman 22%.

The left is war starved. It's not enough for them to be sending 100s of billions to support a war in Europe, now the want Amercan bloodshed as well. Worst president ever next to obama.

President Joe Biden today issued an executive order approving the mobilization of select reserve forces with up to 3,000 personnel, augmenting the armed forces in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

The EU (European Union) consists of 27 countries some of which actually border Ukraine.  The EU collectively has more people and GDP than the US.  We’ve sent TWICE the amount of aid and we are an ocean away.

Make it make sense.

Nothing Biden and the Democrats do make sense except they're in it for their own reasons.

yup.  i didnt bother to mention it because weve had troops there all this time.

but the extra 3000 troops is mission creep, which has been going on since the war started.  We are heading for WW3 very very quickly.

i dont know how many here remember the Gulf War of 1991 but the US actually started with Operation Desert Shield and massed troops and equipment and supplies.  Then one day they announced Operation Desert Storm and swept into Kuwait.  Its the same thing here, except Russia will nuke us if we do it.
