Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the Duma - Russia's lower house of parliament - warned that the United States and NATO's support of Ukraine is leading the world to a "terrible war". "If Washington and NATO countries supply weapons that will be used to strike civilian cities and attempt to seize our territories, as they threaten, this will lead to retaliatory measures using more powerful weapons," Volodin said on the Telegram messaging app. "Arguments that the nuclear powers have not previously used weapons of mass destruction in local conflicts are untenable. Because these states did not face a situation where there was a threat to the security of their citizens and the territorial integrity of the country." Western allies pledged billions of dollars in weapons for Ukraine last week, although they failed to persuade Germany to lift a veto on providing German-made Leopard battle tanks, which are held by an array of NATO nations but whose transfer to Ukraine requires Berlin's approval. Since its invasion on Feb. 24, which it has cast as defending itself from an aggressive West, Russia has taken control of parts of Ukraine and has said it will never return them. Kyiv has said that restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity is not open for negotiation. Volodin's comments followed a similar threat last week by Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's former prime minister and president. Volodin, 58, has been speaker of the lower house, the State Duma, since 2016, having previously held a senior role in the presidential administration. As a member of Putin's Security Council, he has regular access to the president. "Deliveries of offensive weapons to the Kyiv regime will lead to a global catastrophe," he said. Republicans have a long history of being more hawkish than Democrats. Legislation supporting Ukraine has had bipartisan support. For all we know, Trump could have pulled us out of NATO, greatly reducing its role as a deterrent and emboldening Putin to go for an even bigger land grab. You can't label Biden and the Democrats as hawkish just because they don't go all in with the whole America First turdism that the far right embraces. No one is "cheering" on the war. NATO is supporting a free country after a brutal, unprovoked invasion ordered by an autocratic lunatic bent on putting the Soviet Union back together, even though Russia signed an agreement saying it wouldn't attack Ukraine in exchange for getting the nukes. It says right there in the agreement that the United States and United Kingdom would aid Ukraine in the event of a Russian attack. JustinCharge 2,397 Posted January 24, 2023 the Doomsday Clock, set by the bulletin of atomic scientists, was just moved to 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been. also, biden warns of armageddeon. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/nuclear-nightmare-ticks-closer-why-any-use-of-nuclear-weapons-would-be-a-disaster/ar-AA16GZ7a 'Nuclear nightmare' ticks closer: Why any use of nuclear weapons would be a disaster Story by Elizabeth Weise, USA TODAY • 12m ago Comments The threat of a civilization-ending nuclear war increased this year as Russia repeatedly invoked its mighty nuclear arsenal to deter western nations from intervening during its invasion of Ukraine. That threat was reflected Tuesday in the setting of the Doomsday Clock, which ticked forward to 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to signaling an imminent human-created catastrophe. "Each time there has been a setback (in the war), Russian President Vladimir Putin has doubled down. I wish we could discount entirely the possibility that he could resort to nuclear weapons but I don’t think we can," said Steve Fetter, a professor of public policy at the University of Maryland and specialist in international security and nuclear issues. Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning. The nuclear risks are not limited to Russia and its war against Ukraine, Fetter said. "China is building hundreds of nuclear silos. There’s the failure to contain the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs. And India and Pakistan have increased their nuclear arsenals," he said. LIVE UPDATES: Doomsday Clock 2023 time says the world is closer than ever to global catastrophe BIDEN WARNS OF 'ARMAGEDDON': Are Putin's setbacks pushing us closer to nuclear war? Nuclear bombs present a unique, grave risk because nations for decades have stockpiled them amid a global taboo on their use, experts say. The result: Even a single, isolated nuclear strike has the potential to open Pandora's Box — an unpredictable, possibly uncontrollable chain reaction of escalation.
Hardcore troubadour 15,515 Posted January 24, 2023 I have to agree with the liberals here on this one.
