I’ve been all over Manhattan and never felt unsafe. However I am a man and also I knew HT the NYPD hero would immediately come to save the day

Someone say something about slap fights? This is in reaction to just saying Hells Kitchen has gone downhill.  Never mentioned anyone.

I know rearing isn’t your strong point:

It may surprise you to learn that living in New York City is not unsafe, as most folks assume. It’s hard to blame anyone for thinking that life in New York City could be dangerous. With 8.4 million residents, NYC is the most populous city in America and things are bound to happen.

However, relative to its size, New York City is considered one of the top 5 safest large cities in America.

If....It's kind of a big if...

"You just have to know which main streets to stick to and which areas to avoid."

Jerry asked people familiar with NYC for some advice. Your advice sucks. So does some guys from Philadelphia who grew up in NJ and another one from NJ who never rode the subway once. And the best one is some guy who visited a few years ago from some hick town in the pacific north west. How about staying out of it if you weren’t asked? If I need to find out how to buy Pot in Philadelphia I’ll be sure to ask MDC. I think someone here told him how.

Yup, not a slap fight guy at all

I ride the subway everyday although just a few stops and every other car has homeless people sleeping on the seats.

I don’t feel unsafe walking through Times Square and up 34th street to 7th Ave however I will say it’s a war zone of homeless and begging POS. Reason I say POS because it’s no longer “hey man can you spare some change” it’s now in your face “Gimme a ##### dollar !!!” Not a day goes by that this doesn’t happen to me. Scared ? No. Annoyed ? Hell yeah

Welcome to the fifty three club.

I have a female lawyer friend I asked yesterday who lives in a nice apartment in Manhattan about vacancies where she lives. Then of course, we both realized you probably don’t want to pay an arm and a leg as she is paying for her place. I’m sure you’re already familiar but she suggested using Zillow;

https://www.zillow.com/manhattan-new-york-ny/apartments/

She said that is how she found the apartment she is living in now. Best of luck to your daughter!

Another one? This is not a good time for those dynasty Islanders of my youth. My '84 Tigers are the same age, we haven't lost any that I know of but i can imagine how hard that would hit. Best wishes shotsup.

Interesting, thanks!  I hadn't thought about Zillow for short-term rentals but it seems you can, to some extent.

Here is one that's cheap, 2 BR, furnished, has laundry.  In the Harlem area which most of the cheaper ones are, so I presume it is a war zone, but thoughts from folks?

28 Pct.  One of the better Harlem Pct’s. Borders the 25 pct, which has Marcus Garvey Park, stay out. 125st has a metro north station, might be better to take that to Times Square than the subway.

Thanks.  So you are saying that might not be too bad?

Here is another option, a lot more money and in Hell's Kitchen but looks like a nice facility with rooms available furnished and short-term, also closer to Times Square:

Thanks. Jean Potvin passed recently too. Less then a month ago. Dennis’s brother. He was credited with 2 of the 4 cups. Retired in 81. Wow I feel old.

I’d go with that one over the Harlem one. She’s not going up or down the avenues which is where the homeless congregate. Straight walk.  I’d rather that than taking the subway up and down every day.

Right in the neighborhood I suggested (Hell’s Kitchen)

20 minute walk to Times Square.

Glad I could help Jerry.

Yeah that looks legit. I’ve been around that area and it seems relatively safe and such. Not a ton there like if you were in one of the sexier neighborhoods, but likely much more affordable too. And of course everything is relatively close by in Manhattan.

I will say, there was an area of East Harlem that seemed pretty sketchy. I’d be a little wary of that part of the island as well as closer to the Bronx.

Oh, it’s just better than getting on the subway twice a day. The subway is just worse. Neither is any good if you ask me. But you have to stay somewhere. When is the last time you were in either area? Thought so. Stfu.

Unfortunately the Hells Kitchen rate was for a year; for 3 months they want $8K per month. :(

Those would still show up on a place like Zillow tho, no?  I've looked at renting a room and found a few sites:  spareroom.com, roomster.com, there are others.  I told my daughter that might be an option for a longer-term solution if she lives there.  We did something like that for the older daughter when she had an internship in San Diego (rented a room in a house with a shared common area, La Mesa if people know the area) and it worked out OK.  But that wouldn't involve both daughters for this summer, just the one.

I don’t think they necessarily would show up on Zillow. I believe it’s typically the other that lists the rental on Zillow whereas sublet would be driven by the tenant

Where would we find such sublets?

Probably more like the other sites you were talking about. If it were me I’d probably google where to find NYC sublets and get a feel for what sites have the most listings and are reliable. I don’t know if there’s any way to confirm everything beforehand or otherwise protect yourself, but I’d be wary of being scammed or misled.

Hey @Hardcore troubadour and others, how about this one?

https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/578117330434188987?adults=2&check_in=2022-05-08&check_out=2022-07-15&display_extensions[]=MONTHLY_STAYS&federated_search_id=23c7215b-9c1b-400c-8eb6-4b1844a4fe57&source_impression_id=p3_1649297671_v3ipH%2By5lI7UlcN3

2nd and 109th St, doesn't have a common area w/seating/TV but that's OK.  Also no laundry.  But the price is more reasonable and it's south of the other East Harlem one.  I'm more concerned about the area at this point.

Lots of housing projects over there. I’d try and get below 96th street. Also the second avenue subway line starts at 96

Are you saying to avoid the original East Harlem one as well?  Lexington and 117th

Yes.  I think if you go there you’re not going to be freaked out but you’re also not going to do a handstand.  It’s your daughter. It’s different. People don’t get that. 96th st is generally considered the good/ bad line. Not that it’s horrible on 97 th street, like it’s a dmz line.

Here's one which seems to be specifically looking for a summer renter.  Manhattan Ave and 107th St, west of Central Park

Thoughts?  @Hardcore troubadour

Best one yet.  Id do that. And the 96th street line is an east side thing. The west side is fine in that area.

Chiming in late on this thread.  This is a decent neighborhood and very close to the subway and Central Park access.  Riverside Park is also just a few blocks away.
