A Texas community is weighing to shut its library rather than have books that a federal judge said they could not ban.

Saw a similar story a couple weeks ago in another state.

What do people think of this?

The world moves on.  i do see libraries trying to remain relevant.  I think they have an uphill fight.  I did not foresee the deathnell being the culture wars, I saw it being the internet.

It is a good point, for most, simply irrelevant.

I don’t know there is a newly renovated public library about 5 mins from my house and it is used a lot. But, I do see your point.

I do agree this is a bad development and hope it’s very isolated and communities fight against it.

I disagree with closing the library.  I wonder tho if that is the intention or if this is a game of chicken.  

Also, is that a library for middle school boys only?  Because there sure are a lot of books about farts in there.

Not sure. I believe they have to have these books in there and now are holding this community hearing. If no one shows up then maybe it happens? Not sure. There is a certain click bait element to this story but it’s a sad story on many fronts.

The library in my community still has books, but most of their business seems to be as a community center for meetings of community groups.  They also seem to loan books on tape and movie DVDs at a good clip.  Their former attempt tp remain relevant as access to Computers and the internet seems to have faded as penetration of those items into the homes in my community is at 100%.  In very poor areas I believe that remains a purpose.

I bet there are many different stories throughout the country. Even as a just a meeting place for community groups I still see value there and am happy to have tax dollars go to this always vote for various tax levies that come up.

The one in my hood is very nice but yeah I think I have only been inside a couple times in past decade but it does seem to have plenty of traffic, I go by it a few times every week. Hopefully people continue to use these places but maybe I am just remembering the place as I did as a kid. 

I do know banning books is typically a terrible idea.

I am generally against banning books.  Curating collections, prioritizing purchases, well maybe not the same thing.  Failure to stock an item is not banning the item (not that you stated or implied it was.  I am just generally addressing the subject).  

 

I do see a difference between public libraries and school libraries.  The former ought to be more inclusive than the latter.  School libraries, particualrly grade school libraries need responsible curation, looking towards expense, space and audience.

 

There will always be some who get their panties in a wad over literature.  I remember a furor over my grade school having upton Sinclair's the Jungle.  I remember some worked up over Mark Twain and Henry Miller being in our Junior High library.  In my experience objecting to material just makes kids curious to find it to see what all the fuss is about.

Man, this thread reminded me that I still have a book I forgot to return when I was a teen.  I just pulled it off my bookshelf and it still has the due date card in it.  May 3rd if anyone cares.  No year but I'd guess it was due around 1982.  Maybe I'll take it with me the next time I go to LA.  Wonder what the late charge would be.......

I can understand the government saying certain books should be banned...  "How to make bombs with stuff found in Dad's garage" or straight up pornography, or stuff like that which the vast majority would agree with keeping out of a public library.

But deciding which books must be stocked?  That's ridiculous. Let the library decide, after all they aren't charging anyone. Can't find what you're looking for? Then look somewhere else or go buy it. I don't see how people have a constitutional right to have every book ever printed in every library. Regardless if the library gets public funding.

Some stick in their ass bureaucrat shouldn’t be determining this, if you don’t want the book don’t check it out. Closing the entire library because of this is a hissyfit of epic proportions and a sad way to handle this.  

A federal judge determined this was unconstitutional so I’ll go with that over the Llano County commissioners. If they want to pursue further they can through the courts but it’s not their call.

I've changed my mind on this, if some judge is going to decide what books must be stocked, I'm ok with the libraries going away. They are obsolete anyway, how long should we keep funding something that antiquated?

Some private enterprise can fill the void if there is a market for it.

The county can pursue this further, waste a bunch of time and money keeping kids from seeing books about farts or whatever.

But they didn't remove the books based on the library's viewpoint or content discrimination. They removed them based on public complaints.?.

What amount of complaints would make it ok to remove?  Seems like the judge is saying even if the whole town complains, it doesn't matter.  That's ridiculous.
