Schools Are Ditching Homework, Deadlines in Favor of ‘Equitable Grading’

Las Vegas high-school English teacher Laura Jeanne Penrod initially thought the grading changes at her school district made sense. Under the overhaul, students are given more chances to prove they have mastered a subject without being held to arbitrary deadlines, in recognition of challenges some children have outside school. Soon after the system was introduced, however, Ms. Penrod said her 11th-grade honors students realized the new rules minimized the importance of homework to their final grades, leading many to forgo the brainstorming and rough drafts required ahead of writing a persuasive essay. Some didn’t turn in the essay at all, knowing they could redo it later.

“They’re relying on children having intrinsic motivation, and that is the furthest thing from the truth for this age group,” said Ms. Penrod, a teacher for 17 years.

The Clark County School District where Ms. Penrod works—the nation’s fifth-largest school system—has joined dozens of districts in California, Iowa, Virginia and other states in moves toward “equitable grading” with varying degrees of buy-in. Leaders in the 305,000-student Clark County district said the new approach was about making grades a more accurate reflection of a student’s progress and giving opportunities to all learners. Equitable grading can take different forms, but the systems aim to measure whether a student knows the classroom material by the end of a term without penalties for behavior, which, under the theory, can introduce bias. Homework is typically played down and students are given multiple opportunities to complete tests and assignments.

Proponents of the approach, including paid consultants, say it benefits students with after-school responsibilities, such as a job or caring for siblings, as well as those with learning disabilities. Traditional grading methods, they say, favor those with a stable home life and more hands-on parents....In Las Vegas, some teachers and students say the changes have led to gaming the system and a lack of accountability.

“If you go to a job in real life, you can’t pick and choose what tasks you want to do and only do the quote big ones,” said Alyson Henderson, a high-school English teacher there. Lessons drag on now, she said, because students can turn in work until right before grades are due.....“We’re really setting students up for a false sense of reality,” Ms. Henderson said.....Extra credit is banned—no more points for bringing in school supplies—as is grading for behavior, which includes habits such as attendance....The scale starts at 49% or 50% rather than zero, meant to keep a student’s grade from sinking so low from a few missed assignments that they feel they can’t recover and give up......Clark County said in the first year of the change, fewer students across racial demographics received an F....

Parents Don’t Appreciate a “Vaccination Awareness Day” That Doesn’t Really Help Get Kids Vaccinated

.....On Thursday evening, when the email came from CPS announcing canceled classes on Friday, November 12 for “Vaccination Awareness Day,” my heart sank. I had immediate and visceral memories of the days when my kids (now 10 and 11 years old) were younger, and childcare with full-time work was a constant juggling act.... For many working parents, a last-minute non-attendance day presents a real burden, especially during a month when there were already six non-attendance days for students....But this effort feels thin and poorly planned. CPS should have seen this coming and could have done so much more to actually make vaccination available and accessible for their families....

I seriously question whether a late-hour school cancelation actually accomplishes the goal of getting as many kids vaccinated as possible. While it means that children are not required to be in school, it does not address the fact that parents, broadly speaking, do not have the same time off. Nor does it broadly address vaccine accessibility, especially in high-needs neighborhoods....

If CPS truly wanted to make vaccinations a priority, why did they not make every school a walk-in vaccination site (similar to New York City)? Or coordinate a large-scale campaign with Protect Chicago at Home, Chicago’s in-home vaccination program, which is available to all Chicagoans? Importantly, Protect Chicago at Home will not be offering in-home vaccines for 5- to 11-year olds until November 15, which means that is not even an option for families on Vaccination Awareness Day....Finally, CPS has not addressed the fact that the pediatric Pfizer vaccine requires two doses three weeks apart. December 3 would be the date when any student who gets their first dose November 12 should be scheduled to get their second dose. Will students have another day off then? ......Or will this day turn into another time when parents are left to figure it out on their own?

CPS CEO Pedro Martinez has denied that Vaccination Awareness Day was in any way about staffing shortages. However, the day before announcing that schools would be closed on November 12, it appears that CPS was anticipating staff shortages, offering financial incentives to substitutes and staff who would work on that date....At the end of the day, though, the canceled classes on Friday, November 12 feels like another instance where CPS and the City of Chicago have passed the buck, shifting the burden of planning and forethought from an institutional responsibility to individual parents and families.

Michigan School Board Axes Honors Math To Be More 'Inclusive'

.....The Troy School District Board of Education is removing honors math classes from middle school students in a bid to promote inclusion and diversity....However, parents addressing the school board at a meeting said the plans would disproportionally hurt Asian American students — who make up 39 percent of students in the district — along with other immigrant groups.

“So many things are wrong at all levels about this,” Hengguang Li, a Troy parent who also is chair of the math department at Wayne State University, told the board. “Little collaboration effort and consensus with the community you serve. … You’re rushing through changes at the cost of valuable trust from the Troy community.”

Texts Show Teachers Union Working With CDC Director To Keep Schools Closed

....Newly obtained text messages show the heads of both major teachers unions personally texting then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky as the agency was putting together a scientific analysis of reopening schools during coronavirus — with the CDC making a key change that allowed schools to stay closed and appeased the unions....On February 11, 2021, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten texted Walensky saying that she had heard a “leak” from The New York Times about what was in the CDC’s upcoming guidance, and expressed concern that it was “at odds with [their] discussion.”

“They are running with a full speed ahead angle” for reopening schools, Weingarten wrote. She said the Times sent her a copy of the internal draft guidance that said, “At any level of community transmission, all schools can provide in-person instruction.”

“Hmmm. Argh,” Walensky wrote to the union honcho.

The next day, Walensky’s agency released guidance that was different. It said, “All schools have options to provide in-person instruction.” That allowed school districts to stay closed while still saying they were following CDC guidelines. “Middle and high schools in virtual only instruction unless they can strictly implement all mitigation strategies and have few cases,” it added.

Weingarten’s union then put out a statement praising the guidance, and texted the document directly to Walensky with the message, “Thank you.”

Walensky responded glowingly, saying, “This gave me the biggest smile of my week. Thank YOU, Friend!”

Weingarten then gently chided the CDC director for not going further to push stricter guidelines that would keep schools closed, saying “:) we will fuss a little on ventilation but I am so grateful.”

Walensky said, “Me too. Totally fair!”

The text messages were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request from the Fairfax Parents Association, a group of parents who fought to end extended school closures in a Democrat-controlled Virginia district....As it has become undeniable that school closures did more harm than good, teachers unions have since tried to rewrite history and claim they were in favor of reopening schools, even though a long trail of documents show that they consistently fought to “reopen schools safely,” with their focus being on ensuring that the definition of “safely” would mean a very high barrier to opening....

Just add to the current grading system.  In addition to A's through F's just presume A stands for Asians, C stands for Caucasians, and F's for Failure of the racist system.  Add a new double A or AA for all African Americans. I'm not assuming anything, failure is inevitable.  Let's assume that the teachers are good at their job.  That being the case, homework is given to the students to make sure they're actually learning what they're being taught.  The kids that WANT to do well in school will still do homework and take the initiative to get good grades.  The kids that don't care, still won't put forth the necessary effort to learn the material.  The most likely net result of this initiative will increase the gap in grades and/or, the number of kids with higher grades will decrease and not the number kids with lower grades increase.  There is a 0.0% chance that kids who were failing (or had below average grades), will all of a sudden have higher grades (unless they start grading on a curve... which will be next WHEN this initiative doesn't work).

When (not "if), this doesn't work, the reason will be that there's not enough funding for schools.  In blue states and blue cities, the blame will fall under the Republican Congress for not allocating enough funding under the Biden administration.  In blue cities within red states, they'll blame the governor for not allocating enough funding for the poorer districts (even though those districts will get the most amount of funding in the state).

Address shltty parenting, which is the biggest reason these kids are failing. That is not a liberal or conservative problem, since there are plenty of horrible parents across the political spectrum. I'm not claiming I'm a great parent or have special insight, but holding the fuking kids accountable for their own actions, or lack thereof, is a huge failing today. Of course, these kids have all watched their parents try as hard as they can to avoid it themselves, so there are few role models remaining. It's all the kids know.

I'm not assuming anything, failure is inevitable.  Let's assume that the teachers are good at their job.  That being the case, homework is given to the students to make sure they're actually learning what they're being taught.  The kids that WANT to do well in school will still do homework and take the initiative to get good grades.  The kids that don't care, still won't put forth the necessary effort to learn the material.  The most likely net result of this initiative will increase the gap in grades and/or, the number of kids with higher grades will decrease and not the number kids with lower grades increase.  There is a 0.0% chance that kids who were failing (or had below average grades), will all of a sudden have higher grades (unless they start grading on a curve... which will be next WHEN this initiative doesn't work).

When (not "if), this doesn't work, the reason will be that there's not enough funding for schools.  In blue states and blue cities, the blame will fall under the Republican Congress for not allocating enough funding under the Biden administration.  In blue cities within red states, they'll blame the governor for not allocating enough funding for the poorer districts (even though those districts will get the most amount of funding in the state).

From that point, yes, it will meet their goal.  I've always maintained that the only stance the Democrat party is committed to, is being for "the victim".  With that being the case, there needs to be victims.  If there aren't any, they need to create them.  They've been able to successfully accomplish their goals because there are too many gullible people in this country.
