In my opinion, he's one of the most overrated actors of my lifetime.  I don't think he sucks, but I don't think he's all that great.  While I think some of his movies were good... Ghost, well, ok, 1 of his movies were good, the rest were either "ok" (Dirty Dancing), or below average (the rest).  I guess that means my vote is for Ghost, but to me, it's like saying "Here's about 10 movies where one is 8 and the rest range between a 2 and 5."  :dunno:

This is a tough one. Do you go with the over the top awesomeness factor of a movie like “Point Break” or “Road House”. Do you go with a movie that he showed a bit more range like “Ghost” or “Dirty Dancing”.

”Outsiders” and “Red Dawn” both great but were more ensemble casts.

Will have to think about this!

Ghost came out in 1990, the year I graduated. I was 18 when I saw it. Don't know why, but I absolutely loved it and became a swayze fan.

I’m shocked and insulted that this is a question.

Road House.

More of a Jake Gyllanhall movie with the Swayze in it, Donnie Darko is worth a mention.

Swayze sure would have made Brokeback Mountain more sexy

Because it was a great movie! Maybe a bit sappy for a senior in high school but you were emotionally advanced it seems 😀

Uncommon Valor was a movie that was on HBO when we first got that in our house. It played all the time and I watched that one a shetload. Haven’t seen it for years but I really liked that movie as a kid.

Very good movie and like Gene Hackman's line in it, (I'll go in with a pocket knife if I have too)

Really? Overrated? I kind of always looked at the guy as a B actor. I kind of always thought of his movies as kind of cheesy.

I mean, the dude had a great career in a tough field to make it in, but I never caught the overrated vibe I guess. :dunno:

Pretty much proving my point.  Chris Farley made that skit.  No, Swayze wasn't crap, he was "fine", but Farley's performance is why the skit is awesome.

Pat knew his lane. Is in iconic movies. He’s not Daniel Day Lewis but he’s in the hall of very great.

Kind of proving my point I guess.  I'm not saying anything is easy, just that I think he's regarded by many to be an excellent actor, an "A"-list guy.  I think he's a "B"-list (low end), actor, in the ball park that you're in.  That's why I say I think he's overrated.

You may be right. But I think it may be limited to the people on this site? I gotta say, I have never had a conversation about that guy with any friends or family that I can remember. Bad or good. And I even dated a girl for about 3 years who was an actress as a career.

Went with Red Dawn, yes it's an ensemble cast but the topic was "best movie".

Wolverine!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, I don't think I've seen Road House.  Since that is winning, I should probably watch it.  🤔

Yeah, this is the sentiment I'm talking about.  I think your take is on par with the popular opinion.  To me, he's the Eli Manning of acting.  He's fine... but he had a blockbuster or 2, but didn't really carry the movie to greatness.  He did his job at an adequate level, and the consensus overall, is that he's great based on those 2 movies... despite the fact that the rest of his resume is "meh".  When I say the rest of his resume, I'm referring both to his performance and the movies he was in, not one or the other, but both.

What I went with and Red Dawn was ahead of it's time and scary it could happen in these times we live in. RoadHouse is a good fun movie and had to go to the theater for a 2nd time when it came out. You should give it a watch and Sam Elliot's role in it kinda stole the scenes like Kilmer playing Holiday in Tombstone.

You know, that is a tough choice. Not because all the movies are so great, but because there's like four or five that are basically sixes on a scale of 10.

Have to say though I've never watched more than about 2 minutes at a time, I absolutely hate dirty dancing. The f****** song and that guy (singers) voice? God that sucks. And, 1950s Jewish summer camp?

Really? It hadn't even been a dozen years since, ya know. I just can't imagine the Jews really flocking to camps.

The only thing good about that movie was the blonde.

The chick with the nose?  Geesus...

Plus, as I understand it, Patrick swayze was quite a bit of a diick IRL.

As far as signature roles? I can see somebody else playing red dawn. I can even see somebody else doing a Roadhouse pretty easily.

In fact, I think they're doing remakes of both.

But point break? He absolutely owned that role.

They said he was a heavy beer drinker, so can see him maybe being a bit of a cak at times.

I can watch Sam Elliott read the phone book and get a pudgy.

True story about Val kilmer. His agent really really did not want him to be in heat. But he insisted. So much so that in lieu of a big salary, all he really wanted was to be between Pacino and dinero on the movie poster.

Ever wonder why such a minor role got to be dead center on the poster between two superstars?

Well, obviously you didn't see it, it's a movie.  Also it doesn't involve women's collegiate sports.  It maybe has dead people though.  😜

Pat, rest in peace, is a great. Has quite a few iconic movies, albeit it a bit corny, but iconic. A very, very good career.

I thought this poll would be bigger.

Roadhouse, with Youngblood a close second.

"No stitches in Thunder Bay"

Youngblood was good, but that movie was all about Raw Blow
