Illinois Gov. Pritzker allows non-US citizens to become police officers with new law

Recommended Posts

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, D., signed a bill into law that allows non-U.S. citizens to become police officers in the state, angering critics who slammed the idea of foreigners arresting American citizens as "a fundamentally bad idea."

Illinois House Bill 3751 will no longer require U.S. citizenship as a qualification to become a police officer in the state. The bill was signed by the Democrat governor on Friday and will go into effect on January 1, 2024, despite facing heavy opposition from GOP lawmakers and prominent police groups.

How is this different then allowing non us citizens in the military? That's been going on forever. These aren't just illegals off the street they're work visa holders. Here me out for a second.

1. It could help shore up police recruitment.

2. Visa holding immigrants wanting to be a civil servant isn't necessarily a bad thing as far as monitoring their whereabouts and work history.

3. Have them serve in a public servant type job like policing/military etc for 6 years or whatever. After honorable time served, allow them to apply for citizenship.

Seems like it could be a doable idea. Same as the military.

I am not being protected directly by members of the military every day.  Members of the military exist in a highly structured and regemented environment.  The police are empowered to engage with me directly, and violently if needed, to have a thorough understanding of law and skills to be highly disciplined and self-directed in a highly variable environment.

I'm not saying I'm behind this idea entirely. Just discussing some possibilities of the idea. Some of these visa holders have been here years or decades. I would imagine those individuals have the same grasp of our laws as  21 year old citizens who wants to join the police academy. We all know some of our police in this country aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

The immigrants would still have requirements to meet. They have to pass the academy, show knowledge of the law etc etc.

I see your point though. I couldn't help but think of my days in the military working along side of the multiple non us citizens and was trying to compare the possibility of the two. 👍

Federal law states that only U.S. citizens can serve as police officers and deputies. But Illinois House Bill 3751 would change that for immigrants who are work-eligible under federal law.

Seems this will be headed to court. And if that is the case, seems like a losing proposition for the Illinois taxpayer.

Of course, I grew thinking of people from Illinois as FIB's of FISH, so.... whatever.

I'm sure it's heading to court too, and that's fine. I was simply comparing it to military service. Probably not a great comparison. Oh well.

Federal law trumps state law in this case, correct?

In all cases, really(pretty sure, unless in the amendments that say otherwise). The real determination would be by the courts if they were to read the law and decide there was wiggle room in the way the law was written that would allow specific non-citizens to become police officers---some loophole on work eligibility, I don't know. I don't know the federal law on that though, never even heard about it before today.

Illinois must be really desperate to get people to apply to be cops, cause on the face of it, seems like they are setting themselves up for a loss.

I infer that they will suddenly become "white" ala George Zimmerman.

This is probably true. They'll be labeled white nationalists.

if the american people refuse to protect themselves, the democrats will flood the nation with foreigners, turn them into cops and beat the hell out of you in your own home or march you into death camps.  Obey the new dictatorship or die.  My ancestors fled this crap when they did it in Russia in 1917 and only my grandfather actually got out alive when he was a little boy.  My family history starts with him and the rest were dead.

Sadly, most Russians refused to believe it.  Even when many were marched out of their homes and lined up in the backyard and shot, they refused to believe it was actually happening, protesting that they were all on the same side.  I could see rusty or supermike80 standing there, pinned against his backyard wall, being shot by these lunatics, thinking its a troll until the bullet finishes tunnelling thru their skulls.

Ultimately, I don't see how this survives per @Mike Honcho post.  The second a non-US Citizen arrests someone there should be lawsuits aplenty.  They have no rights in this country (and should have none).  The arrest should be thrown out and the city sued into oblivion.

The US military does not operate on US soil.  They have no rights to operate here (much like the CIA) other than training, HQ and policing themselves, AFAIK.  The only time they arrest US Citizens is when someone trespasses on military installations, but they're handed over to civilian authorities anyways.  Or when an active military member commits a crime on a military base.

That's just a former Marine's interpretation of the military's powers on US soil. I'm sure there are some exceptions but the US military, in genera, cannot operate on US soil other than defense of the US from FOREIGN combatants.

So how do you do a background check? Once again, a woke leftist that won’t ever be affected by his own nonsense does this stuff. He’s like the real Tim with billions.
