Trey Lance traded to Dallas...

Recommended Posts

Shanahan fixed the mistake he made in the 2021 draft. Lance was never NFL material.

The Niners traded 1st round draft picks in '21, '22, and '23 and a 3rd round pick in '22, to get Lance.

Resulting in absolutely nothing and finally ditched him for a messily 4th.  Wow, just imagine what could've been. The Niners are good. They'd be world beaters without that monumental mistake.

Yeah, I shouldn't really use the word fixed for that debacle. Shanahan totally panicked. I think he thought he would get Wilson. He sucks as well. The QBs in the next drat are serious potential though.

I can not believe they got a 4th for him. That is a pretty good return for what he is.

Not only that but Dallas is picking up the whole tab, 49ers don't gotta pay anything

fixed is a strong word.  he will never get all the draft capital back that he spent to get that draft pick

Cut his losses, yes.

Admitted his mistake? Sure.

But “fixed the mistake”? No way, they focking blew it

haha all this trade did was lock in the loss and keep the loss from getting bigger over time.

I suppose that's something, but it is not a fixed mistake in my opinion.

Not a terrible idea for Dallas. Trey can sit and hopefully learn how to actually play football. Maybe in a year or two he gets thrust into action and surprises

Trey must really be bad then.

He can't be much worse than Grier.

Yeah, they're definitely looking at him as possible long term Dak insurance.

I don't know if he will pan out or not, but he wasn't ready. He was supposed to be one of those project QBs.

He only played about a season or so in Division 2. To think he was gonna jump to being a starter in the NFL in a season or less was unrealistic.

Now with some time, he can stay healthy, learn for a couple of seasons, then perhaps we'll see what we got with him.

well, I think his biggest problem was how early he was drafted.   when this happens there is incredible pressure to perform quickly.

Like Richardson, he could have benefitted from an extra year in college.

the good news is... given the low price the Boys paid for him, there will be no more pressure (other than what he puts on himself)   He needs to clean up his mechanics, get more accurate with his arm and learn his progressions.    Not everyone can make the jump to the NFL cleanly.  it may take him a little while to get there.   but with Dak Starting the Cowboys can take their time developing him.   hes no threat to Dak so it doesnt create any problems like his presence would have if he stayed in San Fran.

I think his chances of being a good pro just went up a bit.   what I dont know is how much patience the Cowboys will have with him.

Well,  a backup QB is likely worth that   given his upside I'm a bit surprised they couldnt get a 3rd but I understand San fran had roster cuts to make and time was ticking, so I think they did as well as they could under the circumstances.

He is Josh Rosen 2.0

only time will tell.   he declared early for the draft, so hes considerably younger than Rosen.  was when he got turfed.

there IS still time for him to turn it around.     whether he does (or not) remains to be seen.    It is still in his control.  he can work hard and watch film and clean up his mechanics  but if he wants to be a starter, he NEEDs to earn it.

This is why I ignore people who say things like, "like you know more than NFL coaches."

I watched all of these guys and I was shocked when they gave up all of that for Lance.  For that matter, I thought Zach Wilson wasn't anything special either.

But when did you (or anybody) watch Lance? Guy started 1 college season (FCS no less)... he and Trubisky seemed like the easiest DND candidates evah.

DynastyNerds has game film on almost every prospect.  Even for SDSU, there were 3 or so games.

Nowadays, you can get game film on almost anyone.  Just Google player x film and there are multiple games on YouTube

I just don’t know why one would want to watch film on Lance.  And what one things they might see, the Niners watched film about Lance, and now he’s with the cowboys.

When a team knows everything there is to know about a player and still let him walk...  always makes me wonder. Either he's terrible and/or the other guy is truly special.

Sorta like the Browns letting Hunt go - don't know if that's a statement about Hunt or a rave for Chubb (and Ford)... maybe all.

The 49ers chose Brock Purdy as their starting QB. Darnold is cheap so he's #2. Trading Trey Lance is to recover $6,000,000 in 2024 - they need to sign Nick Bosa and every extra $million matters.

If they thought Lance was their future at Qb, the Niners wouldn’t have traded him to recover any amount of money, and losing the back up job to Darnold is a disgrace.

I would argue there might be one (maybe two) players in the NFL worth the price they paid for Lance.

when that is your starting position, there is an incredible amount of pressure on the kid to perform right from day one.  It was an ill advised trade.   The only way this trade works out is if he turned into Jaylen Hurts or DeSean Watson (before the massage scandal)

even then, I still dont know that its worth it.

I have no doubt this is also about money.  as they are close to the cap, this deal needed to be made.   Now or next year.   When you have an asset for sale whose value is in decline, now usually wins over later.

Darnold can be quite good when there is no pressure.  I learned that watching USC games and that's how I knew the Jets fans shouldn't get excited about him and how I knew the Panthers fans shouldn't get excited about him when he got them to 5-0 or whatever it was that year he went there.

I play in a dynasty league.  Watching film is how I knew Elijah Mitchell was good as a rookie and James Robinson was good as a rookie and how I knew Jeudy was too soft to be drafted as high as he was in rookie drafts and how I knew to sidestep Laquon Treadwell because he relied on his size in college and that wasn't translatable to the NFL (same for N'Keal Harry) and how Marvin Mims isn't that good and how I know Christian Watson is going to disappoint this year because he's not going to create separation and Jordan Love isn't aggressive enough to throw him open.

Wide receivers are actually really easy to scout.  It makes me wonder why NFL teams are so bad at it.

did he really lose the backup job to Darnold?  or did they already decide to get rid of him before they brought Darnold in and this was their official reason to do it?

Teams look at the skill set and imagine what could be......

occasionally that works out, but most often I have found that at the NFL level you are getting the same player you saw at the college level.

its just that some of the tendencies/bad habits you see occasionally at the college level tend to happen more often at the pro level when a pro level player leans on them.   Then they go back to their bad habits.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Christian Watson averaged 2.9 yards of separation per route. That is more than AJ Brown and Stephon Diggs averaged. Your film analysis could use some work…

I don't know what to make of Watson. My understanding is he's fast, but isn't a great "route specialist."  Some wr's can get by with just speed... for a while.

He is fast, but also tall and a great athlete, who can use his body to high point the ball. At this point in his career, his route tree appears limited.

or he only watched one or two games.

sometimes when the sample size is small and the player plays better or worse than normal, you can get the impression the player is better (or worse) than he actually is.

Sounds like Randy Moss - played football like he was grabbing rebounds in the NBA.

Interestingly Watson is 6'4"... same as Moss.   :ninja:

yeah, between that and having a new QB, there is a lot of risk here.   Lots of potential..... but also lots of risk.   Personally I think the fftoday rank is a little high for him for redraft (and his ADP is a bit Low) but that is my opinion.   I do feel he is a better candidate in keeper/dynasty formats.
