***OFFICIAL Lions @ Chiefs NFL Season Opener Thread***

Yeah, I've decided. Kelce not playing is baked in and it's not even certain yet.  I'm cheering for the Lions but the smart money is on the Chiefs to cover.

Chiefs -4.5

The Chiefs are 14-25 as 3.5 or more since 2020.

Dan Campbell as a dog is 17-9.

Sharps are on Detroit, as am I.

You're about as sharp as a swan feather so that makes me feel even better.

I probably won't bet a side here.  And think the Lions have a solid year in the very bad NFC and NFC North.  I was just amused by the eeyore Lions fans suddenly thinking Lions are elite after a 9 win season. After that many years of disappointment you would think they would be leery and just be happy to be in the mix.

Jack Campbell was a reach at 18.

I was devastated when the Lions passed on Jalen Carter at five. They'd traded back to draft Gibbs at whatever 12, which had me fuming. Soon after, they took Campbell at 18. At that point, I rage-quit watching the draft. I couldn't take it anymore. There's easy to find evidence in this forum to that effect.

For the record, I've warmed to these picks considerably since then. But at the time though, for weeks in the local Detroit media market on sports talk radio, the press, and the local fans with podcasts, there was much speculation on who should we take in this situation or that one.... and then when the first round finally came ... we got none of them. Nobody that had registered a blip on our radar. Instead we took fockers I'd never heard of, who'd generated no buzz, and that no one had been talking about. Well actually Branch had been a target, but I was too busy howling at the moon or something and had stopped paying attention long before he was selected.

Well, time went on. When you watch these guys as the offseason unfolds and see their interviews, things change. "Oh, so we didn't get bags of hair after all, they're actually quite talented players." So there's optimism that Brad Holmes has struck gold for the third draft in a row, something that didn't exist on the day of the draft.

By way of contrast, it's Jaemo (Jameson Williams) who's looking like a massive bust and I had been perfectly fine with drafting him last year.

So, for whatever that's worth...

Chiefs elevated a te from the practice squad today in case he can't.  Looks like it's definitely a game time decision.

Even though I could only name one player on the current Lions team. I know exactly what's going to happen they are not going to be good this year every year the fans drink the Kool-Aid they think they're going to be good and finish 5 and 11 or 4 and 12. Nope they're going to suck they're not going to win any playoff games and the lions will be the same old lions

The roster has been totally overhauled such that most, if not all, of the kneeler scum from 2020 are gone when the only thing we were competing for was to be the most woke franchise in the country.

And your wrong, this is the first year season tickets have sold out in the Ford Field era. There hasn't been this much hype for the Lions since  the years Scott Mitchell was stealing defeat from the jaws of victory as he squandered away Barry Sanders, Herman Moore, Lomas Brown and Chris Speilman's prime.

Also, the one player ...  Marvin Jones?

This probably won't happen, not because they added all these great players like the few here seem to believe but because the conf and div are both putrid.   NFC is the JV conference now.  And the North is not good.  Bears still suck.  The Packers are trotting out a 1st time starting QB.  And the Viking were total frauds last season.  So much so they hacked up the roster after being a 2 seed.  They know they were frauds.

I could see them not matching these lofty expectations.  But doubt they miss the playoffs.

Geoff. I didn't even know they were playing tonight.

I stopped watching the NFL in 2015ish with the kneeling and only watched the lions. When the NFL went full woke I stopped completely.

Also I'm not wrong. 5-11.

Kelce out.   Good deal, let him get fully healthy and not risk further injury.

All the people dogging the Lions draft.  Jack Campbell and Brian Branch will be top 5 in Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Gibbs and LaPorta will be top 5 in OROY.   Nobody had a better draft class than Detroit.  And they even had Brodric Martin who has moved up the depth chart at DT, Sorsdal who is a good depth piece on the OL, and Green is a speedster WR who made the roster as a 7th Round pick.  And the biggest wildcard of all is Hendren Hooker at QB.

The Lions hit on 8 people, four of who will be studs as rookies.

It was reported when I said it was reported. Just because you wait for someone you know to repeat it doesn't make it not true.

For the Chris Jones stuff and what to look for tonight... three weeks ago the Chiefs sent a day 3 pick to the raiders for Danny Shelton.

https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2023/8/29/23850930/report-chiefs-trading-in-division-for-a-defensive-tackle-release-danny-shelton

I feel pretty good about derrick Nnadi and tershawn Wharton but obviously neither will have the impact Jones did with pressure on the passer.  Where the Chiefs hope to generate that will be from second year first round pick George karlaftis, and this year's first round pick from k-state whose name I can't spell or pronounce yet. The Chiefs also have solid linebackers and corners who will be used in blitz schemes to create pressure and disrupt the quarterback.   We'll see if it works soon, or if Jones will end up with more leverage than he had before.

Always interesting when holdout actually lasts into games.  Leverage will go one way or another even of it is slight.

Man Lions fans are getting overconfident.

This is still the defending Super Bowl champions, and you’re still the focking Lions.

That said, go Detroit! :pointstosky:

Well 12 wins is already in the pocket.  Some beat writers talked up a couple rookies in practice.  So 2 elite teams really.

I wonder if McDuffie will follow him around all night.   Will be fun to watch them match up.

Because you're wrong. We aren't going against the defending Super Bowl champs. The Chiefs are missing two lynchpin players and simply aren't a championship caliber team this week.  I fail to believe that Mahomes minus Kelse, and with only two days prep, is any better than Aaron Rogers and we already know how that goes. This week's Chiefs are the Green Bay Packers in red uniforms and they're about to experience what Green Bay did twice last year going up against Detroit.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs D-Line is going to get overwhelmed with two starters missing. Detroit's Pro Bowl laden O-Line may well be the best in the league and all KC has to offer are backups and wishful thinking.

If they were the Super Bowl champs it'd be a different story. They're not and it won't be. What to expect is Detroit vs Green Bay Part Three. Further, this Lions team is significantly better than that Lions team.

Yeah, I usually don't bet on conflicting fantasy and betting interests, so I may lay off. I like Detroit but have Skyy Moore playing.

I've been killing it in baseball and will be sorry to see it go. NFL is hard to bet and win 65% of time. And my fantasy interests are investments. I may follow on the Detroit ML. 50 bucks aint that big of a deal at +170.

I'm with you, gambling makes sports more fun to watch.
