Not sure I'd go that far. Tlaib and Omar are awful, and I'd never vote for either. Unless their opponent was Trump. I do not agree with their positions, especially regarding Palestine/Israel. But at least they're honest about their convictions. The only convictions Trump has are the ones he'll be seeing handed down by future juries.

I don't think the riots themselves were downplayed, as many of the images of fires, etc. were all over the news.   Much of the media did however correctly point out that the majority of protesting, usually during the day, was peaceful, but they sometimes turned destructive at night likely fueled by people that hadn't even been protesting..
