cmh6476 1,010 Posted December 6, 2023 https://theathletic.com/5114092/2023/12/05/ncaa-subdivision-athlete-compensation-charlie-baker/ They want you to subscribe, I am cutting and pasting from somewhere else so this isn't my content to put here but fock it Quote NCAA president Charlie Baker on Tuesday proposed the creation of a new subdivision within Division I that would allow the highest-resource schools the ability to compensate athletes directly through a trust fund and direct name, image and likeness (NIL) payments. The groundbreaking proposal was sent out to Division I members and obtained by The Athletic on Tuesday morning, and it included the following recommendations: The formation of a new subdivision made up of institutions with the highest resources that can directly compensate athletes through an “enhanced educational trust fund,” which requires the schools that opt into it an investment of at least $30,000 per year per athlete for at least half of the school’s eligible athletes. Schools would have to adhere to Title IX, providing equal monetary opportunities to both female and male athletes. Schools in the new subdivision could create their own rules separate from the rest of D-I, and those rules would allow them the ability to address policies such as scholarship limits and roster size as well as transfers and NIL. Any Division I school would be able to enter into an NIL deal with its athletes directly, which is not currently permissible. Any Division I school would be able to distribute to any athlete funding related to educational benefits without any caps on such compensation. These recommendations from Baker come amid mounting pressure to allow schools to directly compensate their athletes, and as the NCAA is facing significant legal challenges to its model. In the letter to D-I members, Baker calls his proposal a “forward-looking framework” that “gives the educational institutions with the most visibility, the most financial resources and the biggest brands an opportunity to choose to operate with a different set of rules that more accurately reflect their scale and their operating model.”
cmh6476 1,010 Posted December 6, 2023 Hey @posty, I think you made a comment as my son was considering schools, that it was goofy (paraphrasing) to choose a school based on athletics. If this goes through, why wouldn't you as a college kid go to the cool school that pays professional athletes, rather than some small school with lesser athletes and lesser competition. Is your son an athlete that would be getting paid? Otherwise, who cares if they're paying athletes? I'd rather go to cal tech or princeton than a school that pays their athletes. MLCKAA 545 Posted December 6, 2023 Would seemingly bring about the death of college athletics as we know it. I particularly don’t like thinking about how this would affect March Madness.

He's really talking about who is going to be QB for the teams while he's there, what basketball program should be better. Not necessarily as a final determining factor, but just something to consider as he wants the best overall experience. I think posty's response was "that's a dumb reason to choose a college"

KSB2424 3,148 Posted December 6, 2023 College Athletics as we used to know it is broken. Just end the facade of semi-pro sports in colleges and create Developmental Leagues for kids who have a possibility of making athletics a career after HS. Europe does this with elite soccer players. Universities can have sports and play other schools but it’s for students who go there for an education.

Allowing coaches to change schools whenever they want, after recruiting kids and the kids having to stay there was wrong.
KSB2424 3,148 Posted December 6, 2023 The NIL, The Portal, Kids in colleges who shouldn’t nor really want to be there. To much money. It’s a complete sham. Expand the NBA Developmental League and The NFL needs a Developmental League. Similar to the Minor Leagues in Baseball or Training Academies for Soccer. This is for the H.S. Kids who think and want to make athletics their profession. ETA: and universities can still have sports. They just won’t have the ELITE players out of HS there. There is no NIL or Portal or CFP Committee or all that nonsense. No multi-million dollar coaches. Look, kids don’t go to Army and Navy for football alone. And it’s not always the BEST football but it still has the same pageantry and the stadium is full and the students love it. It’s just NOT semi-pro football. The ratings will be the same as minor league baseball. NIL and the portal ruined college football and basketball. We will soon see the lesser sports suffer. It’s not going to end well.
