Stop with the feelz and deal in facts boyo.

People with low ability mentally are very limited in their job options.  And these job options typically pay very poorly.

That's a fact.

As an aside, do you know what the average income is in the US?

You are the only one bringing "feelz", I am the one that sourced....so you assertion here is not entirely authentic.   I think you should reconsider your position on those with disabilities, they are great people who have alot to offer.

I am aware of the term working poor.  I am also aware that we were discussing whther those with lower intellectual gifts could make well more than minimum wage.  You know want to convert that discussion to one of undefined "high paying jobs"  We were not discussing High paying jubs, just making substantially more than minimum wage.  There is a range in there, at least to my way of understanding those terms.

Of course there's a tiny tiny % of jobs that pay better than minimum wage and require no skills.

Based on the US's median income of <$40k, do you believe there are lots of these positions?  Because $40k is less than $20 per hour.  And that's at the TOP range of this part of the median.

There are 50M people with IQs of 85 or less in this country.  You think there are 50M of these jobs?  You should aware all the people working all the chit jobs I noted that they could be making so much more money.

The arrogance of this place...SMH

It's like some of you never interact with people in different financial strata than yourselves.

Is that the discussion we were having?  I think not.  On this new discussion I do not think there are 50 million of the jobs I described.  Unfortunately when our manufacturing base fled so did many of the jobs that would fall into that category.  In the end I agree that there is less opportunity for those with less gifts.  i have never argued otherwise.  That my friend is life.  If you find that unfair and want to subsidize those unfortunate souls be my guest.  Just don't mandate that I do so through legislation.  Whether I choose to do so ought to be my choice.  BTW, given that choiceIi choose, often, to do so.

Thank you and I agree.  My argument the entire time is that the arrogant RLLD declares all poor people poor because they made bad decisions.

This is simply elitist BS thinking.

Yeah, Market Basket had a presence in Southern California decades ago, but closed or sold all their stores in the 70s or 80s.

If they declared bankruptcy during the Trump years that was 4 years ago but they managed to continue to stay open with all those locations this entire time.  This is absurd - if bankruptcy was the problem they would have closed those locations earlier, but didn't.  This wage increase was the reason - they literally said that was the reason and it's patently obvious that they were able to stay open while in a bankruptcy.

You obviously don't understand how bankruptcy protection works.

I don't know that he generalized to all poor people, maybe he did, I didn't see it.  Certainly many folks with I.Q.'s less than I have a tough row to hoe, financially.  Of course while I was educating myself and supporting that education through minial jobs I would have been classified as working poor.  I made sacrifices for years before I started earning a decent living.  Would I have preferred my minial jobs paid better, sure, but that was not what the market would bear.    Still, I came away from those jobs with more than wages.  I came away with experience as well, experience which was valuable as I moved forward in life. even in minial jobs I moved up and obtained supervisory experience.

That's great.  You have that capability and likely a strong family support system.  As do I.

Many many folks are not so lucky, which I'm sure you agree.

And yes @RLLD has stated many many times ITT that the poor are at fault for being poor through their bad decisions.

I leave you to discuss with RLLD then whether by "poor" he meant every one of them, or a percentage of them are such as a result of their decision making.  Me, I am off to work out and then to do some kayaking.  It is projected to hit 90 here today so I think the water will be a good place for me.  BTW, paddling is a relatively cheap and available form of recreation avaialble even to the poor.  I got into it for under $600  ten years ago with no additional cost over that time for equipment.  I could have gotten in for less but I bought new.  I also chose to pay $60 this year for access to the reservior near me (Senior discount, otherwise it would have been $75), but there are places, rivers where I can put in for free though they are not conveniently located near me and so there is cost to get there.  Fortunatley I can bare those costs if I chose to do so as my lifetime of labor and my frugal nature has left me with a small nest egg in retirement.

Since Rubios was not performing well and under bankruptcy protection having closed many stores over the previous years, it seems to me that they just made some bad choices, and it's irresponsible and liberal to blame their situation on any outside influences.  They should have just made better choices.

The people in here were having a nice conversation in here despite differences of opinion. You came in spouting your typical nonsense not adding anything to the discussion. You are continuing to do that by saying "OH I win a message board disagreement...."

I'm sorry your life is that empty dude. Maybe you'll find a girl one day :dunno:

Dude post his same 2nd grade level insults day after day hour after hour.

He's posted 100x since Monday.

Best to just pity the poor loser who's life is clearly beyond pathetic and miserable.

Ima guess the fact that the chain filed for bankruptcy in 2020 leads me to believe they were struggling already and blaming the minimum wage hike sounds better than admitting they were losing customers to other chains in a competitive market.

You tried.  You really did.  However, no amount deflection or "I got him this time" nonsense is going to cover for you.  I simply responded to YOUR ad-hominem post so don't try to pretend you were "having a nice conversation" because you weren't.

I'm sorry I hurt you, but the truth shall set you free.

Anyway- back to the thread- kind of sad that the company has been in bankruptcy protection for years and underperforming and is now laying off workers and trying to misdirect the anger away from the company itself.

But it’s not, so I asked for you to explain. Where is a “starter job” defined and why do so many people who aren’t “starting” have them? Furthermore why do people in “starter” jobs deserve to have their labor exploited worse than “non-starter” employees? When you “start” needing to work to eat and live, why is it OK to not pay those people sufficient resources to do so?

I just gave you the definition of a starter job -- your first job, not intended to support a mortgage and a family.  Did you work to eat and live solely on your first job?  If so, I would venture to guess you were in the vast minority.

The labor is not "exploited," comrade.  It is paid what it is worth.  Again, since you continue to ignore it, I'm talking about a starter job which is a HS kid flipping tortillas at Rubios... oops, no longer.

Question:  Do you think it makes sense to raise the minimum wage in the entire state?  Do you think a restaurant in, say, Beverly Hills could afford to pay more than a similar one in, say, Bakersfield or Fresno?

Interestingly the Fox Business article didn’t even mention the bankruptcy. It mentioned Red Lobster though!

Bankruptcy implies that the company was already on less than ideal financial footing, so they were less able to absorb the wage hike. :dunno:

FWIW-

As of 2022- there were about 773K workers in the fast food/counter service industry. Almost 79% of the employment are people between 16-29...About 300K in the 16-19 age range and then 20-24 is the next highest concentration and 25-29 is after that but about a third of the 20-24 age range workforce.

So you are looking at about 38% of the workforce being a teen and then the remaining 62% are not.

Additionally- to the discussion at hand earlier- 55% of the people working at a fast food place have either a college degree, or have done college work of some kind.
