Strike 5,536 Posted June 21, 2024 Do you prefer manual or automatic trannies? I like sports cars so have mostly driven manuals but my 4runner has an automatic and it sure is nice not having to shift. So I'm torn on the subject of trannies. What say you? 1

Manual 100% unless big city rush hour driving. Sucks you basically can't buy them anymore except on a few vehicles. Manual is also better for offroading. I knew when I opened this it was a thread about cars. Well done.
lickin_starfish 1,935 Posted June 21, 2024 Depends on the vehicle. I'd rather have automatic for daily driving in my truck or the wife's car, but manual for a sports car or muscle car.
weepaws 3,191 Posted June 21, 2024 Nothing is better than beating someone in my 63 Buick which is a automatic, racing a person with a manual, who’s faster than me, but doesn’t know how to work the manual tranny, and beating them.

Engorgeous George 2,331 Posted June 21, 2024 I hate automatics. For the first time in my life I now own one as manuals are increasingly hard to find.

easilyscan 924 Posted June 21, 2024 Definitely auto. Holding a beer, a cigarette, and a cell phone while driving is more than enough.

Voltaire 5,315 Posted June 22, 2024 I'd prefer manual because I can always get it just right immediately, rather than having to wait for it to kick in.
SUXBNME 1,499 Posted June 22, 2024 I'll never go back to manual. My 2006 Taco with it's 4.0 is plenty of power for me.
jerryskids 6,790 Posted June 22, 2024 My first car out of college was a manual 5.0 Mustang LX, man I loved that car. Eventually I got a job commuting into the city in stop and go traffic and... meh, it was a pain. It's still useful in slippery conditions to be able to force a gear, but it seems most cars these days have that ability through either manual shifting or 1/2/3 lower gear options. Bier Meister 1,710 Posted June 22, 2024 Manual. every car I have owned has been manual.

My very first car was a 1977 350 4-speed Camaro. I loved that car but the body needed some serious work but I was so broke I couldn't even take to Earl Scheib. But, yeah, manual is good when you want to impress people or race cars for a living, but for every day life today's automatics are far more convenient and superior.

I just rented a car for a trip to Scotland next month (going to The Open with my son!). They still drive a lot of manuals there. I paid a good amount extra for an automatic -- driving on the wrong side of the road after visiting a few scotch distilleries will be challenge enough, I don't need to figure out how to shift with my left hand on top of it.

I hear ya'! Wife and I went to England last year for 3 weeks and absolutely opted to pay more for the automatic. It was also good to have a co-navigator that had to constantly remind me to look at my right when turning.
Maximum Overkill 1,988 Posted June 22, 2024 I'm all about Manuals but not in the daily driver. My play cars are all manuals in one way or another, the daily driver is all about comfort.
