California had the most active Five Guys among US states in 2023

Recommended Posts

While there is an abundance of fast food options out there, Five Guys has always stood out among the pack thanks to its hand-formed burgers and fresh-cut, peanut oil-cooked fries.

Jerry and Janie Murrell opened the chain’s first location in Arlington, Va., in 1986, naming the restaurant for their five sons. In early 2003, the family began offering franchise opportunities, and within just 18 months, the business sold options for more than 300 new locations. Thirty years later, Five Guys now operates 1,700 locations worldwide and is still expanding. But which U.S. state is most dedicated to Five Guys fandom?

California leads the pack with 123 locations within its borders, while Florida and New York round out the top three. (We’re giving the Empire State bonus points since one of its Manhattan locations houses an upstairs speakeasy.) The chain’s home state of Virginia is going strong with 76 locations, and in the entire nation, only one state has no Guys to speak of (sorry, Alaska).

I can’t go there with my family because my daughter has a peanut allergy. But I enjoy it from time to time myself.

Because they’re not a drive thru, and because we have so many hamburger drive thrus here (including In N Out which is considered upscale) Five Guys had better be pretty high quality to do business. I think it is.

This is what I said on Friday and I was told I was nuts.  I did like the fries though.

Their prices are insane and kinda have been even before bidenflation

There is one a few miles from me but I've never eaten there.  Just checked out the menu -- a bacon double cheeseburger is $13 :o

Now I'm intrigued though, I might need to try it.

I like Shake Shack burgers better. 5 guys always made me feel slck after eating it. But, fast food burgers can be great like twice a month.

Holy sh1t.  I agree with peefoam.  If not going to a real restaurant, Shake Shack might be my favorite

So “pee” = not cool but “pimpledoosh” = cool?

Bigtime, any burger, large fry and drink combo over 6 bucks is overrated. The Habit does make a real tasty burger though

Never been. I've driven by several on my way to In-N-Out though.

No kidding.....ever since the minimum wage hike by Newscum, burgers need to be $30 to sustain, amongst every other inflated thing Dementia Joe created.

You're not. That's my point. Everything is overpriced for what it is

over time, this is going to happen. prices cannot remain the same when ingredients are commodity items.

regarding 5 guys, their price point has been a bit higher than most.  they are more fast casual than fast food. i would put habit in the same category, but better quality and value imo

After you mentioned Habit yesterday, I thought hmm, I think there is one around here somewhere.  But when I went to their website, it was directing me to Cali, so I figured it closed up.  But then I drove a direction I don't usually go and, walla!, there is a Habit a few miles from me.

So I've got both that 5 Guys within a few miles.  And... my wife is heading out of town next Saturday and leaving me to fend for a week.  I told her last night about this discussion and how I might do a little taste test while she is gone.

Looks like Shake Shack was added to the fray.  I've got to drive further for that, but in the interest of science...

Maybe I'll add In N Out as a control for the experiment as well.  I know I like them.

Shake shack is pretty much a nicer and less greasy version of Five Guys, IMO

just a heads up… at 5 guys, a small fries feeds 2-3 people. And a regular burger is 2 patties

Thanks.  Good info on the fries.  I had kinda gathered that the "regular" was a double, but probably would have asked to confirm.
